Valentine's Day
I hope you all got a little something and feel totally loved up 3nodding
But does anyone know who St. Valentine was?
I did a little bit of research because to be honest I didn't have the foggiest. I have been loathing his festival for making me feel like a loser for years, without knowing who the hell he was.
There are quite a few legends but the oldest one I found is this.

He was a Roman priest from around AD 295 who married young couples in secret.
The then Roman Emperor Claudius (couldn't have been the I Claudius guy) passed an edict outlawing marriage. Apparently not enough chaps were signing up for the army and Claudius believed that if they weren't so distracted by wives and children they would be more interested in hacking each other to bits for the great and mighty Roman Empire.
Valentine believed that marriage was ordained by God and should therefore not be outlawed. He was eventually caught and sentenced to death for his "crime". Thus his martyrdom lead to his sainthood and eventually this bloody holiday that makes singles feel like crap and anyone in a relationship like a smug git!
