Chapter 16: American T.V is teaching me Spanish.
Yes, it has been a while since my last update. No, no apology, I have no reason why I post here, other than it can be fun to rant and rave for a little bit. With a girlfriend and some time off uni I have been relaxed and rant-free, but with a failed Chem exam behind me I feel the need to let off some steam.

A few weeks ago I was watching E.R. Now, I like this show, more or less. It has been becoming less about the hospital and more about the people and how screwed they all are, but it is still fairly entertaining, like most of the American T.V shows that the guy in the T.V paper says are clogging up our airwaves and choking Australian talent (more on this later). However, they had a twelve year old Spanish girl who started gabbling on in Spanish. And I understood half of it, without the subtitles.

This at first shocked me, then got me pissed off (I can learn Spanish from T.V, but I can't learn enough Italian in four years of school to pass my Year 10 exam with anything more than a D?), but then made me realise that the guy in the paper may be right. If I can learn Spanish from American Television, I must be watching a hell of a lot of it. So I quickly jotted down my favorite shows.

- CSI (All three versions, although New York is fairly crappy)
- Cold Case
- E.R
- Las Vegas
- Law and Order (All three variations, but since they usually screen against CSI they tend to lose)
- The Simpsons (Well, no s**t, I'm from the Simpsons generation.)

All of these shows are shows I try not to miss. And they are all American. Half of them have someone gibbering on in Spanish every few episodes, which would explain my sudden linguistic talents. (Now, understanding Spanish does not mean I can speak it. I think that if I tried speaking to someone Spanish I'd know just enough to scar them for life).

I tried to think of an Aussie show that I enjoy here, and I couldn't. The Footy Show (AFL, not this pansy NRL crap) might make a rating, but it's been pretty ordinary as of late and getting worse. There is nothing Australians make anymore than doesn't make me sad.

Especially comedy. Anyone out there old enough and Australian will remember gems like Fast Forward and Full Frontal. Slightly older people (I got it from some old VHS that have long since died) will remember the Comedy Company. And I think there is at least three people world-wide than remember The Late Show with Mick Malloy and Tony Martin (No, it is just me? Damn). Those were alinke in two ways: They were sketch shows, and they were good.

Then you look at the latest offerings, things like Let Loose Live and Comedy Inc. They too are alike in two ways: They are sketch shows, and they are about as funny as incurable cancer of the a**. What has happened to Aussie T.V? Pull your fingers out of your collective assholes and start working on something good Australia!

I'll make my final paragraph short.

See?
