Night as Pure

A flap came from the closing of a notepad. A young girl stood up from her position, previously leaning against a tree. She shook her head, making some of her curly white hair fall into her face. She had been sitting in the forest since noon trying to improve on her drawing skills; she figured that starting off with a tree or two might help, maybe an animal that passed by. She re-opened her notebook and flipped through the pages of squiggly trees and a blob of ink that was supposed to be a bird she had seen earlier. The only decent piece of art she had drawn that day was a white flower she had seen when she was on her way to her drawing spot.
The girl looked up at the full moon only now remembering what today was. The 31st. Sure, it could just be any month with the number 31, but not this month, not now. Today was Halloween, the 31st of October. She flinched at her stupidity, not only had she wandered deep into the forest just to draw a tree or two, she had gotten carried away and ended up forgetting everything. She closed her notebook again and looked around, normally she would blow off Halloween and just focus on her dancing and singing.
Damn you Anna she thought when she heard a crunch, if it hadn't been for you and that stupid ghost story of yours. The girl focused on rushing home, her sandals making little crunching sounds when they cracked branches.
Hey Jennifer, have you ever heard off the story of the Bunny Hood Bridge?" a girl with long red hair asked. Her name was Anna, 19 years old. The same as Jennifer herself. The white haired girl shook her head not really caring that much but Anna wouldn't let her friend get away so easily and she began the story of the haunted bridge.
Jennifer rushed through the woods focusing on one thing and one thing only, getting out of the woods and back into safe civilization. She concentrated hard and smiled when she saw light only to discover she was standing in a spot in the grass where the moonlight shone brightly. Jennifer sat down, she had to be brave, and she couldn't let her fears get to her. Suddenly a crunching came, Jennifer flinched at the feeling on her shoulder. Nightmare, Nightmare, Nightmare she kept saying in her head, but it wasn't a nightmare. No, in fact it wasn't even a dream. The 19-year-old girl collapsed getting her green jacket slightly dirty and the flower fell out of her hair.
There before her stood a creature, not just any creature. It was small like a rabbit, but it was a dark green and had shining yellow eyes. It had long ears that seemed to have cuts in them and were furry at the top. "Hi there" it said cheerfully and getting on its hind legs waved a green paw just like a hand flapping hello. "Never seen you in these parts before, not to often you see a human at this time of night much less today" it said not at all surprised by Jennifer’s freaked out ghostly white face.
"Who the....what the....what's going on?!" she nearly screamed as more creatures much like the one before her popped up around her. There were other creatures there. Deer that resembled Alligators. Birds that looked like Spiders. It was almost like their entire DNA had been switched.
"Oh, you don't see us often. You see we don't come out like all the other animals do during the day of night, or when they get scared,” the creature explained. "Those guys have no guts in them, they hear a footstep and they run off like it's the last day on earth" it said crossing its arms and shaking his head. "Anyway though, us creatures. We only come out on Halloween night, the perfect time for a scare fest or just to come out and relax while those other whimps are hiding from the spooks. My name is Phal by the way,” the creature said in his still cheerful tone. "What's yours?" he asked.
It took a long time for Jennifer to comprehend what was going on, and took her even longer to force out her name "Jen...Jennifer" she said looking at them.
Phal got down and hoped over to her, a snake slithered across the ground the color orange and black. Halloween colors. It slithered over to Jennifer and his tongue slithered out between his teeth in an attempted smile as it crawled up. For some reason Jennifer didn't mind at all when the snake began to crawl up her arm and wrap around her. "My name is Horus" the snake introduced in the snake like voice Jennifer had watched on t.v.
Re-introducing herself Jennifer couldn't help but smile as the creatures came closer to here, no matter how scary they appeared for some reason she enjoyed their presence. The appearances still gave her the creeps, after all talking snakes, glowing golden eyes, who wouldn't be freaked? "What are you doing here anyway Jennifer" asked a creature similar to Phal except in a high-pitched female voice. Her fur was pink and she had softer red eyes.
Jennifer smiled "I was drawing but got lost on my way home" she explained.
"These drawings really do suck" Phal said making Jennifer turn her head noticing Phal and some other creatures gathered over her notebook turning pages. The girl quickly scrambled over and grabbed the book from the creatures. Horus laughed in his snake like tone "using his tail he pointed in one direction. "The closest neighborhood is that way, don't make any turns just keep walking straight and you'll be out of there,” he said.
Jennifer smiled and Horus slowly slid off of her and into the grass. Phal and Jennifer stood up, Jennifer on her legs and Phal on his hind legs. "It was very nice meeting you all, and thank-you for the help" she said and began to walk away and the creatures departed. Jennifer stopped and turned her head "I guess I'll see you all next Halloween" she said with a smile before the hoot of an owl made her turn and rush back home.
