Valaryia was tired of letting Mela make her feel like her life was meaningless.

She looked out to the bright beyond surrounding the solitude of the dark rock walls and stalagtytes that engulfed her. She knew that, even for a vampire, it was unhealthy for her to remain within this darkness. Her time of introspection was long over, and conclusions had been made. She would one day visit Heaven, but she would not starve herself to do so. She didn’t care anymore if she broke her contract with God – she was going to eat human flesh again, damnit. But only for her means of survival, not for fun or for pleasure. And she needed something to take her mind off of the angel.

So she decided to go back to school.

School, techincally, was for young mortals. Valaryia was going back to apprenticeship. Seeing as she was fortunate enough to be blessed with many gifts, (even if she could not bear to accept it,) she was apprentice to many things. She returned to two old teachers to resume her learning in foreign language, drama and musical theatre, and saw three new ones to learn arithmatic, speech, and, (just for kicks,) mortal physiology. (In a moment of brief hysteric, comedic fun, she thought it to be beneficial to learn the locations of all the major arteries in the human body.) With so many new subjects, surely her mind would be occupied from wandering to Mela. But that did not mean she could fight off the angel in her unconsciousness, for every night she had fallen asleep, she dreamt of the beautiful seductress (one very vivid dream of being in her body Valaryia recalled the most).

Valaryia’s true heart belonged in music, and in performing music. She found herself less and less drawn to performing theatre, but more to performing music. Still, she felt an attactchment to theatre, especially to her Lady Titania, her mentor in drama and musical theatre. If not for Valaryia’s meeting Mela, she was sure she would have fallen head-over-heels in love with Lady Titania – but she was married and not attracted to Valaryia in the slightest.

I’m not better than Mela, Valaryia thought with sudden bitterness.

As if the thought were cursed, a letter slid into her cave. Some small spirit who delievered it escaped Valaryia’s range of view as she picked up the letter, crudely addressed. She opened it, to see Mela’s writing read a haunting sentence:

“I have thoughts too… that I miss you and your better off without me.”

Now what the hell did that mean?

The night before heading into town to begin study, Valaryia made a stroll to the Lake. It would be a longer walk once in town, so Valaryia thought of this trip as somewhat of a final goodbye, even though she knew she’d have more oppurtunities to visit once under study. No one was around, and so Valaryia took off her cape, skirt, blouse, and all her jewels, finally stripping off her undergarments. She was terribly exposed, but there was nothing around but shadows to take in her nakedness.

Or, that was what she thought, until Mela moved into the moonlight, some thirty feet away.

Valaryia heart did not stop beating as it should have, but it gave a terrible aching in longing. Valaryia knew quite well she could swim quietly to a more secluded lagoon attatched to the Lake. But she became masochistic, (as often happens in love,) and approached Mela, coming so close in merely seconds, her breath suddenly against her old lover’s neck.

Mela turned around, and, to Valaryia’s surprise, smiled. “Valaryia,” she said. “Hello.”

She seemed happy. How the roles had changed. Valaryia stared blankly onward, as if she could see right through Mela’s face as though it were transparent.

“Hi,” the vampire finally said. She forced a smile and her dry lips cracked in the corners of her mouth. She forgot all about the strange letter Mela had sent, being to consumed in Mela’s very presence.

A small silence. Valaryia noticed a sudden lightness in Mela, as if their break-up had a release on Mela’s spirit, and she could be free again, light from the weight of Valaryia’s love lifted from her. Valaryia thought Mela to be a fool, to ever believe things would be fine between them. That they could ever be friends after all the intimacy shared between them. It was now that Valaryia could see that even angels have flaws. Curves of Mela’s body seemed less sexy. How could Valaryia had not noticed how dry Mela’s hair looked, even when wetted down?

“So… how are you?” Mela said in her little accented way.

Just ******** fine, Valaryia wanted to say, and wanting to spit when she said it.

“I’m okay. You?”

“I’m pretty good. I’m looking to get a new horse. She’s a beauty.”

“Oh you are?” Valaryia said, pretending to be fascinated. “What kind is she? I mean,” Valaryia said, remembering Mela’s limit on mortal vocabulary, “what does she look like?”

The two talked of meaningless topics, things Valaryia had to plaster smiles on about and pretend to care. She was a fake. A phoney. She was no better than Mela lying to her. And so, when Mela asked the wrong question, Valaryia snapped.

“Anything fun happen?”

Fun? FUN?! Valaryia felt nerves snapping and recoiling in whiplash. Yeah, I’ve had a hell of a time sobbing over your sorry a** every night, teeter-tottering back and forth on what I think of you, slitting my wrists and pulling my hair trying to get your stupid, beautiful ******** face out of my ******** head!

“Well, I saw my friend Renna,” Valaryia said. “We did a lot together. And…” Maliciousness was devouring her. “…and some friend of yours has told me some things.”

Valaryia felt a small pleasure from the silence reverberating throughout Mela. It was so strong the bat inside of her could pick it up on her sonar.

“She said…” How could Valaryia explain without giving Lucasia’s name away? “Well she told me all about her. The real reason you fell out of love with me. I just wish you could’ve been honest with me.”

“I have been honest with you,” Mela said, not hiding her frustration. “I have never lied to you. I have always been honest.”

“Well, with things I’ve heard it seems like you’ve been lying… I mean, I wanted to believe you, but knowing this it just all makes too much sense.”

“Well I am not lying to you. I should not ever lie to you.”

“I don’t believe you anymore.”

Mela rolled her eyes. “Well fine then, I guess I lied to you.” Voice dripping with sarcasm.

Valaryia hated Mela’s sarcasm. She hated how superior Mela sounded when she was sarcastic, sounding like she was above everything and everyone.

“Well, just… I-I…” Valaryia was sputtering, recovering from Mela’s sarcasm. “Just some things I have heard sound so true… I know your in love with Katarina or whatever her name is –“

“Katarina?” Mela said, in amused disbelief. “She’s my mother’s friend.”

“Well, I…” Again, Valaryia felt stupid. But Lucasia said! What reason does Lucasia have to lie to me?! “I don’t know what to believe. I hear one thing, and you tell me another… it’s hard to trust you now…”

A silence befell them. “Well, um, anything else fun happen?” Mela said.

“No.”

Pause. “Nothing at all? No funny stories?” How familiar this seemed.

“No. I’ve been crying less, so that’s good I guess.”

Valaryia felt miserable sudden. She could hardly see Mela’s face in the dark. But she was sure Mela hardly cared.

“I have to go.”

Mela made no point in disputing. “Alright.”

“Well, bye then. I love yo—“ Valaryia gasped and clasped her mouth shut as Mela’s eyes widened and she burst into laughter.

“Oh my god, oh my god I’m so sorry,” Valaryia said, feeling worse and worse by the minute. She was so accustomed to the rountine of a small kiss in the air and an “I love you” before departing that she couldn’t help but to repeat it even now. She felt tears surface her glossy eyes as Mela continued to think the situation to be absolutely hilarious.

“Okay then, bye,” Valaryia said quickly, turning away before she could catch a last glimpse at Mela saying, “Bye Valaryia!”

Mela walked away, feeling good and amused.

Valaryia walked away, crying silently.

But Mela was the victim here.

She had no idea that Valaryia had already decided that would be the last time the two would ever talk.
