So, it seems now I'm only posting new journal entries once per move. Just to catch up, and for the benefit of my enthusiastic but disorganised stalkers I'm now in Takao, Tokyo (which is about as far as you can get from Akihabara while still being in Tokyo).

To cut a long fantasy short, if you're a Megatokyo lovin' Gaian, chances are you have a highly idealised view of Japan. I'd love to set you straight on a few points.

1. Anime is just for kids. No, really. While many Japanese folks idly browse a particular manga compilation during their interminably long train journeys, they really don't care about anime. In fact, many have only a glancing acquaintance with it.

2. Japanese folks love foreigners. Yeah, they totally do. Their glaring is purely affectionate.

3. Being an "otaku" is not a good thing. In any country.

4. Not all oriental girls are pretty. Some, in fact, are barely presentable. Sorry.

5. Shortly after arrival in Japan, the sheer overload of anime and anime paraphenalia will leave you numb. All but the most stringent of otaku will (thankfully) develop a strong apathy to anime.

Well, that's it. Sorry I'm less funny than before. I'm too busy trying to get my DS signed by Miyamoto.

Azly is a jaded English teacher living in western Tokyo. Like all good Tokyo residents, he hates westerners.
