Casey Novak is a young, tough, focused prosecutor who, while sometimes deeply affected by the horrific situations she deals with on the job, does not often reveal her emotions. Novak can sometimes see the world in black and white and follows the law strictly without sympathy for the suspects and their situation, unless she is convinced otherwise by the detectives in SVU, or by extreme mitigating circumstances. Her idealism becomes especially clear in situations involving abuse of power. Although she quickly lost her innocence when dealing with sex crimes, she still shows uneasiness when dealing with the gray areas of human involvement, preferring the letter of the law to the messiness of each individual reality.

Detective Elliot Stabler is a police officer with Manhattan's 16th Precinct, also known as the Special Victims Unit, which investigates sex crimes. He is dedicated to his job, but this dedication can occasionally turn into obsession, as he often takes cases personally, affecting his judgment.

Olivia Benson works as a detective in the Special Victims Unit, which investigates sex crimes. Her undercover alias is Rachel Martin. She is tough, compassionate, and completely dedicated to her job, to the point that she has no personal life of which to speak.

Dr. George Huang is both an FBI Agent and the residential psychiatrist for the Special Victims Unit team; basically, he provides them with expert analysis of crime scenes and suspects. His vast knowledge of forensic psychology and psychopathology lends him an almost psychic ability to understand, empathize with, and predict the actions of suspects as well as victims. He also has extensive knowledge in the fields of theology, ethnic studies, and forensics.

Detective Munch first appeared as a homicide detective in a fictional police department in Baltimore as a central character in the TV series Homicide: Life on the Street, which debuted January 30, 1993. After it concluded its seventh season in May of 1999, John Munch retired from the Baltimore Police Department, took his pension, and moved to New York to join a sex crimes investigation unit. On SVU, Munch is now mostly an information gatherer, but is occasionally involved in undercover operations. His main talent seems to be picking up on minutiae that no one else notices, and being more well versed in literature and politics than his younger colleagues.

After fighting in Vietnam, Capt. Donald Cragen started his career as a homicide detective in the 1960s with partner Max Greevey, gradually rising up through the ranks to police captain. An alcoholic for much of his early career, Cragen went sober after pulling a gun on a taxi driver in a drunken rage when he was still a detective. He did not touch another drop until 1999, following the death of his wife, Marge, a flight attendant, in a plane crash. Cragen is portrayed as a kind of stern, but understanding, father figure to the detectives who work under him, although he had an early habit of haranguing them about the weaknesses of their investigations.

A medical examiner, Dr. Melinda Warner often works with Manhattan's 16th Precinct (aka the sex crimes unit) by helping its detectives find scientific evidence to support their cases. She and her husband have one daughter in middle school. She was a doctor in the United States Air Force, and served two tours of duty during the Gulf War before she began work as a medical examiner.

Dani Beck is a multi-lingual warrants detective who comes from a specialized unit of the New York City Police. She is assigned to the Special Victims Unit as Elliot Stabler's partner after his previous partner, Olivia Benson, is reassigned to a special temporary operation with the FBI. Beck is portrayed as a dedicated cop, to the point of being described as "overzealous" by Cragen.
