Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, and until now it really hasn't bugged him till he met a girl named Rukia Kuchiki. She presents herself to him surprised that he can see her, she explains she is a master of death, a Shinigami. Finding him humorous she binds Ichigo with something called kidou or demon magic. However by doing so, Ichigo is unable to move when something called a Hollow approaches Ichigo's house and attacks his family.
Rukia then separates Ichigo's soul from his body with a red glove with a skull emblem on it, and forces him to defend his home, Karakura Town from the Hollows, which he accepts finally reluctantly. Not long after several Hollows come from their world called Hueco Mundo, and force a soul to become a Hollow that would normally takes months. This is the soul of a sibling that Ichigo knows from his school. His classmate's name is Orihime Inoue, a girl who's cupsize is fan service to all, and envied by many girls in their school.
Ichigo emerges with a giant sword that is called a zanpakutou or soulslayer that surprises Rukia, because a Shinigami's reiatsu is judged by the size of their sword. Reiatsu is described as someone's spiritual power. Ichigo easily takes down the Hollow and kills it…starting his life as a Shinigami and the beginning of our story.
