Police said the Mustang landed on its roof with the girls trapped inside in three feet of water.
The accident took place shortly after 11:15 p.m. on St. Rose Avenue in St. Charles Parish, half a mile south of U.S. 61, according to Trooper Joseph Piglia, a State Police Troop B spokesman.
Piglia said 17-year-old Tiffany Allen was driving a 1994 Ford Mustang convertible with one passenger, 16-year-old Miranda Walker. The pair was traveling northbound on the highway when Allen attempted to pass another vehicle, going 70 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Allen lost control of her vehicle as the car left the highway, flipping end over end before ultimately landing upside down in a swampy area filled with three feet of water. Piglia said the convertible’s top was up at the time of the accident.
Several motorists, St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s deputies and St. Rose firemen attempted to save the teens, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities do not suspect driver impairment played a role in the accident, but they do believe excessive speed was a factor, Piglia said.!!!!!
