(Yes, I'm aware of the irony of the title. This is more of a post directed toward the Doctor Who Production team and British news media than to spoiler posting fans. I mean, they can only post what has already been revealed. xd )
I was hoping that the BBC would actually manage to keep a lid on spoiling the story for their fans like they did every other season of the new series previous. But, sure enough, grass hasn't even begun to grow on the grave of series three and we have already been told that Donna will come back on the first episode, Martha will come back mid-season, the Ood will return and Kylie Minogue will starring in the Christmas Special. At this rate, by the time the Christmas special airs we will already know what will happen in every single episode of series four before it even starts. I can't even try to avoid it because S4 spoilers saturate just about every piece of Doctor Who media on the internet.
Call me old fashioned, but I like to have the story revealed to me when I'm watching the show, not in a BBC news story or in a forum post where someone carelessly forgot to light the spoiler tag 6 months before the show is scheduled to start.
Is it so much to ask that BBC Wales not trumpet every step of the production process to the news?
Honestly.

I wonder if it's a sign of growing insecurity about the ratings--that they think they have to do stuff like that to tweak our interest & keep us paying attention until the next series?

Another possibility is that since major stuff always manages to leak out anyway, perhaps they've come to the conclusion that they might as well be the ones to release the news first. That way they have some control over the flow of information, and don't have to spend so much time refuting all the false rumors. The revelation about Martha coming back mid-season, for instance, is probably due to earlier rumors that Freema had been permanently axed.
As for stuff like Kylie Minogue being in the Christmas special, I don't really consider that a spoiler (as such), since it tells absolutely nothing about what the story's about. That sort of casting stuff doesn't really seem all that spoilery, unless it was someone like Billie Piper or Christopher Eccleston, since you can kind of guess who they'd be playing.
Of course this is all academic to me, since I fully embrace spoilers. razz

I think you're right, Hairy. In an interview, Russell was asked about this and he said that they have to release some stuff early, but they're careful about what they do. They haven't got time to release press statements about everything because there are so many rumours.

The most glaring example is when it was leaked that Christopher Eccelsten would be leaving... before the first episode aired. gonk
