I was scrolling through my dm handbook and i noticed that they had firearms and laser pistols ,etc listed there and my question is I thought d and d was supposed to be a rpg based before the renissance era so y to they list high tech weapons?

I'm pretty sure that those weapons are in the section for "unusual D&D settings," right after the equipment for stone age, renaissance era, and modern era.
They're there in case you want to throw in some artifacts from the future or in case your party ends up doing some time travel.
Frankly though you'd be better off just checking the d20 modern sourcebooks for that stuff.

Hehehe... I've been thinking about throwing one of those into my campeign with very little ammo. 5 shots at best. You know, just to find out what would happen.
