...why don't we have a math or physics contest? I don't specifically have an idea for one, but I'm willing to donate 5k to help with prizes and what not.

Suggestions?

Hell no.

Unless if we make certain sections. There's no way I'm going up against Layra-chan, unless if it's in a sprinting or hurdling contest.

I could actually probably beat you in a sprinting contest; no offense, but I was one of the fastest short-distance runners in my high school. Being ridiculously underweight is good for some things.

Anyway, as much as I do want to boost membership participation, I dislike the idea of science or mathematics contests, the latter especially. Beyond the fact that both endeavors ought to be cooperative, not competitive, is the fact that I just can't see a contest being more than a test of mental speed or memory, neither of which I see as having terribly much scientific value (also, I'm terrible at both). If perhaps the contest were geared towards, perhaps, creative or logical ability, then it would be better, but I'm not sure what kind of contest of those abilities can be held in the scientific realm without becoming just regurgitation of obscure works.
This mostly stems from my noticing that most mathematics contests these days are either speed or obscure formulas, including even, sadly, the Putnam. Sure, the Putnam asks for proofs, but you're still working with a specific kind of objects that are only found in math-contests and maybe the occasional sadistic analysis text.
The only good gauge that I know of are problem sets, and even those are significantly affected by outside knowledge.

121.5 lbs as of this morning. What were your times for 100, 200, and 400?

I don't actually know my times, come to think of it.
Nor do I actually happen to know my weight at the moment. Somewhere between 100 and 110 lbs, I think. I should find out.
Strangely enough, I do remember that my body requires the caloric intake of a twelve year old, as determined by the internet.
How tall are you? I'm somewhere around 5' 4" maybe 5' 5", so while I'm not terribly underweight, I am underweight.
You'd probably beat me at the 400, but I stand at least a fair chance at the 100 and 200.

And I really shouldn't be taking things off-topic.

there is also a technicality, if I may so remind people of technicalities. The money in the guild piggy bank can only go to buying forums, and is used as leverage for the value of the guild if it is ever to be sold. I can't access the money to give to a contest, so the money would thoroughly have to come out of our own pockets, which can be done, but there would be all kinds of trust issues.

Also, people already post interesting/challenging question that range from requiring mental speed or are obscure, so why make it a competition? Although I could think of a way of doing this, I don't know if enough people would apply, and then, what level to do this at? everyone is at such ranging levels.

The correct word is "lazy." Most of my energy these days is lost to ADHD and poi, with the remainder divided between mathematics, music, and making fun of people.
I mean, I am busy and all, but I'd be lying if I said that that was the actual reason I don't run.

Yay for laziness and poi.

You do any staff twirling, juggling, or similar stuff, or just poi?

Would you happen to have any ideas, or am I allowed to go back to derailing the conversation?

Also, Dave, I do only poi at the moment, although I'm hoping to learn staff and eventually meteor.

Oh, no ideas at all. Derailing conversations is a hobby of mine.

Though, at 4am in the morning my mind is a little dead [I cannot sleep, I need to get my body clock into night-worker mode because I have a run of three midnight shifts in the control room starting tomorrow; I love the CDF coffee machine, it's always there for me.]

I had to look up poi. Now I know it has a name. I was shamed as a physicist in my grad school year who does not have a side array of juggling tricks. I should learn, all physicists should be able to juggle. sweatdrop

I still can't juggle.

I can poi, staff and contact juggle to varying levels of ability, but regular juggling's always eluded me for some reason.
I've been trying to juggle for a lot longer than I've been trying anything else too. It's annoying.

It's also annoying because it seems that everyone else knows how to juggle too. The number of complete strangers who've come up to me to give me advice on juggling is crazy. While most people don't even know what poi is.

Anyway, in an attempt to be on-topic.
I propose a competition of 'juggling'. As Iguana mentioned, juggling is essential for any physicist, therefore, we should have a 'juggling' competition, where juggling is poi and contact, because contact's funky.
Maybe staff or regular juggling if you really want.
