The Darwin Wing was cool and welcoming compared to the over-bearing heat of the Green-House which, in Seveda's opinion, spelled death on all accounts. As a tulip, Seveda of course adored the sun and the warmth that it brought, but without water or something else that would keep her cool, Seveda thought she would likely drop dead in the heat trapped within the room. And thus the girl had retreated to the Darwin Wing, forgetting to close the door behind her as only her and Kitten were technically supposed to be within the unfinished Wing.
Kitten had certainly done a lot of work on the new Wing, working overtime in an attempt to get it up to working speed for the observers and other specimin of the Vale. Unfortunatly, every step forward seemed to present another step back and with each turn Kitten was forced to push the opening of the new Wing back a few days.
Today, Seveda found herself with a new collection of companion pets that Kitten had recently recieved and studied. The grasshoppers stared blankly at her from behind the glass while the glow-bugs lit up excitedly at the sight of their favorite teenager. Fish splashed lightly, trying to get Seveda's attention and she giggled as she inched over to the guppy pool. "Hey you guys," she cooed to the surface of the pool, smiling at the sight of the wide-eyed guppies. Reaching into her pocket, Seveda began crumbling little treats into the water for the fish, humming softly to herself as she did so.

Well, Mara had never been one for rules, or rather, Kealdrana had not, and Mara had unkowingly picked up this disregard. Seeing as she'd been away far to long to remember any such rules, or the fact that the wing was simply to far beyond her comprehension of 'off limits'. Mara was sure that they could use her help anywhere and everywhere, so somehow she'd ventured into the Darwin wing, gasping at all of the things that miracuously appeared before her as she ventured in.
She paused for a moment at the entrance, gazing carefully at the embolized letters forewarning the contents that lay inside. Kealdrana had told her something about it 'never opening'. Of course, Mara thought that neither had been there long enough to know, and a peek couldn't hurt. Musing lightly, Mara assumed that this seemed to be a regular thought and that perhaps the Darwin wing was visited much more than it should have been.
This almost seemed confirmed as Mara stepped into the place. Not too far distant was another young Vale 'patient' who appeared to be treating some of the creatures in the inhabitants like the best of friends.
A choke caught the back of her throat as she remembered all the times she had to be left alone in those tubes. Yet it seemed so long ago now. . .
"Hey," she whispered quietly, slipping the rest of the way into the cool wing and sliding her way towards the young girl as softly as she could. It seemed a sin to distrupt the area with loud noise.

Seveda almost hadn't heard the soft whisper of the woman behind her, but all the companions in the room had suddenly taken to making a bit more noise than usual and her little guppy friends had all turned their wide eyes in the direction of the disturbance, though they couldn't actually see anything what with the woman not standing just above the water. Curiously, the teen turned her head towards the door, her mouth slipping open a bit at the sight of the beautiful woman before her.
Suddenly remembering it wasn't good manners to sit there with one's mouth wide open and trying to catch flies, she promptly zipped her lips together for a moment. A voice whispered in Seveda's head that she hoped she'd be as pretty as the green-skinned woman before her, and Seveda couldn't help but let a tiny smile form upon her lips. "How did you get in here?" the girl asked, slipping her hand into her pocket to replace the rest of the treats she'd been giving to the fish. Her voice was normal, a bit sing-songy and sweet, a voice that really represented the girl it belonged to.
"I don't think Kitten would want anyone else in here," Seveda started cautiously before shaking her head and letting her smile grow wider. It had been too long since Seveda had had anyone her age (or in Mara's case, older than her) to talk to and it was a welcomed change. Seveda was growing tired of talking to children and babies all the time. "What Kitten doesn't know can't hurt her. I'm Seveda."

Mara glanced behind her at the way she had come. "It was unlocked," was all she said, wondering if the girl before her didn't want her to stay. She wouldn't be surprised, what with her green skin and all? It was certainly an odd color to be. Very odd.
But she supposed it made her seem like a plan to most people. She wondered if she stood really still in a corner, people would confuse her for just that. She would get out a pot and try it someday.
As the young 'specimen' spoke of her not welcome, Mara turned to slip out, but the girl's voice echoed again, causing her to pause. So she was allowed here. Sort of.
Her head told her that kitten would likely come and spot the two of them. Then Mara would be in a deep lot of trouble, and well, that would be no place she wanted to stay. But she would hate to disrespect Seveda and dismiss herself as well. Not when they could be friends.
"Mara," she replied, adding a smile to Seveda's own. "Its beautiful in here," she breathed, daring to take a look around and hoping that Seveda would invite her to see the rest of the place.

Pink skin turned a darker shade around the cheeks as a blush crept in. Unlocked? But that would mean that it had been Seveda's fault for leaving the door open and Kitten would really get mad if she found out about that! Seveda didn't find the green skin unnerving at all, but that may have been because her own skin was a great deal unlike human skin and she was more than used to people giving her odd looks because of it. For the most part though, Seveda looked fairly human giving all the other stranger looking specimen that littered the Vale compound.
Kitten, much to Seveda's current delight, was not actually due to be at the Vale for a great deal of time now. Kitten's other charge, a 'scent baby' as she'd been described, also shared Kitten as a motherly figure. Hopefully some day the teen would be able to meet this 'sister' figure of hers, but at the moment she wasn't allowed to go anywhere.
"Mara? That's a nice name," Seveda replied, smoothing out her skirts slightly as her eyed roamed over Mara's own dress, envying the clothing as much as she envied the beauty of the woman before her. Seveda wondered how much older Mara was than her, but she was really too afraid to ask. "Isn't it? This is just the companion complex, but the other parts of the wing aren't finished yet so I can't show them to you at the moment," It was actually a little dangerous in the other parts of the Wing at the moment and the last thing Seveda needed was a dead Vale on her hands.
Motioning slightly for Mara to come over to her, Seveda crouched down once more next to the pool of guppy fish. Pulling out another handful of treats, Seveda held them out to Mara once she came nearer so that she too could help to feed the tiny fish.

Mara had no relatives, or anyone whom she could readily take care of. Kealdrana took care of her, and her alone. It wasn't a very hard task, mostly it just involved wandering the halls and greeting others. Mara began to wonder if the woman saw her as more of a friend now, than anything she could ever study and was trying to keep Mara out of any observation rooms as much as possible.
"So is Seveda," Mara returned, trying to gain as much like as possible. How she'd love to sit with the young girl for hours, simply talking to another one of her kind. They could do all kinds of things together, and she could teach Seveda what to do with that pretty hair of hers.
"I don't mind," she replied simply, a sweet smile crossing her face as she followed Seveda carefully towards the water, hiking up her kimino so she didn't stretch the fabric my crouching.
Mara took the food from the young child carefully, not wanting to spill any before she got a chance to deliver any of the items into the pond. Each grain was handled with intricate care and she laughed in delight as the fish swam to the surface to retrieve the goodies she placed out for them.
"You must love coming here," Mara whispered, still very afraid of breaking the peace which echoed over. "Its ashame its not open yet, someone could get a lot of love here." She stared off into the water dreamily, thinking of far of things and places that she'd hurry to avoid when asked about.

"I wish it was open as well," Seveda replied with a smile, letting her hands rest upon her knees as the guppy fish made friends with the green-skinned woman who was now feeding them the treats they loved so much. "I could make more friends that weren't babies if people were allowed in here I think. They way I wouldn't have to go looking for people."
The Vale was simply too large for Seveda to spend a lot of time exploring. Exploring meant she'd have to take a great deal of time out of reading or taking care of all the companions and that simply wouldn't be acceptable in the tulip teen's opinion.
"These are all the available companions at the moment. My favorites are the guppies and the glow-bugs, but the butterflies are quite sweet as well." Seveda said, motioning in the direction of the other pets as she continued to watch the guppy pond. The guppies were just so cute with their small bodies and their pretty colours. The other ponds held larger fish, but she didn't like them quite as much.

Mara nodded in understanding, still not taking her eyes of the fish. They were indeed some of the cutest creatures she had ever seen, but she wasn't going to pass judgement on any of them. She was sure they each had their purpose and their own tasks. She could respect that.
"I haven't met any other Vale for a long time," Mara said, looking at the girl carefully. "Its good to see someone again." She'd seen the observers, all watching her coyly as she swept lightly through the halls. A few employees, who'd she'd carefully showed the way, but other than that, no one.
Available companions?
Mara had no idea she could get one. It would be beautiful to have a butterfly, she thought.
"Do you live here?" Mara asked. It seemed everybody lived somewhere else and did different things. It was awfully confusing.

"Really? Who do you see if you don't see Vales?" Seveda herself had seen more than her share of Vales. Little ones here and little ones there. Screwing up her face slightly in concentration she tried to figure out if she could remember meeting any Vale her age or older before Mara, but no matter how she tried she could not get a face to come to her. "I think you're the first Vale I've met that isn't a baby. It's nice...to be able to talk normally," she said before blushing and tucking her head down a bit.
After a moment the girl stood and once more she smoothed out her skirts, moving around to where the insect companions flit about anxiously, waiting for the attention of the tulip girl. "Do you have a companion Mara?" Seveda asked, looking over her shoulder as she neared the glow-bugs. The teen had left her own glow-bug back in her room, for she felt it was unfair to flaunt the free glow-bug to the rest of them within their spacious but still enclosed space.
"Live here? As in live in the Vale? Of course I live in the Vale. I'm not allowed to leave." The girl had thought the rule universal to all Vales, but perhaps Mara was different. Perhaps, thought Seveda as a loop tied in her stomach, once she became an adult like Mara she too would be able to leave the Vale. "Kitten and I share a sort of apartment type home here at the Vale. It's somewhat near this Wing, but I wouldn't say it's 'just across the hall' if you know what I mean."

"Mostly my caretaker," she responded blankly - that and the random employees that wandered around. In fact it was disturbing how little of her other kind she had seen. Most of her life was spent locked away waiting for someone else to take care of her.
Mara smiled and turned to face Seveda once more. "Its nice to know there are youth to cary us on, though." A fish caught her eye once again and she chuckled at it. A rare, and sweet note that showed she was truly and completely happy. She could feel the worry leave her heart. It was a magnificent feeling.
A companion? She'd seen a few and Elizabeth talked of them, but no. She shook her head as an answer. To be truthful, she wasn't sure she wanted one. How would she take care of it? It would surely die under her care for there was always some way to make a mistake.
"I live here, too," Mara said with a smile. She wasn't allowed to leave, either, as far as she knew, but she'd never asked to. The Vale was a perfect enough place for her. "A good deal away from this wing." She settled onto her back to look at the cieling listening to the gentle flow of water and moving creatures. "You must feel beautiful getting to come here when you like."
