It goes without saying that the biggest debates are usually over religion. Do you follow it? Don't you? Are you an extremist? Are you conservative? Are you liberal? Are you often judged? Do you judge? So, I guess I will start with my opening statement, yes, I'm a follower of Christ. But I love different view points! So let's discuss,
Religious Philosophies,
How fanatics give religions a bad name
personal beliefs
How a belief system is often corrupted
The irony of wars fought over the "peace" offered by religions...
Or whatever else you think of!

My personal favourite, as shown by Christianity, is the way they preach. "Jesus Loves You! Now follow his ways or ELSE!" Or the Holy Wars? "God loves you! Therefore we shall kill off all of your nation to prove it!"

lol u may have seen me in ED trying to disprove most religions... but really i dont have a problem with them... anyone can believe whatever they want but for me: earth, life is heaven and death is hell.... thats why i dont want to die, but again love my life so much... im only getting one, might as well enjoy it...

Yes, the famous religious debate. I, personally, am agnostic. I know that it might be possible for a god, but I also know that it is possible for there not to be a god and it more than likely won't be proven in my lifetime. Even if I believed in the Christian god or many other gods, I would be going to "hell" or whatever the place of condemnation is, so there is really no point. lol

But anyway, I have no problem with people of other religions and if my friends give me advice from the Bible. It only starts to bother me when people try and push their religion on me.

I love religion discussions!!!! (I'm weird I know 3nodding )

i am Roman Catholic & am proud to be so. (Anyone wants to shoot me a question about Catholicism I'll do my best to answer well.)

Religion is perhaps the most dangerous thing is the cosmos. Wars are fought in religion's name, countries are founded upon it, people are hated/reticuled/killed, even kill others for their faith. On the up side, religion is the foundation of our morals and beliefs. Christians & Jews theorhetically base their mortals and ethics upon the 10 commandments. So does government: 'Thou shalt not steal or kill'. (I assume Islam does too but I really don't know enough to say for sure due to the Isaac v. Ishmael thing)

I think it's unfair to tell a person of another faith they will go to hell because they're ___ rather than ____. We are humans, who are we to tell a person they're gonna go to hell because they aren't the religion we are.
Religion is not something one should follow blindly. No religion is 100% correct. God is all powerful & all knowing, man is for the most part...stupid. And it's man who is interupting the Bible (God's version of 'goo goo ga ga'). Man isn't going to be 100% correct. For ex. I think birth control is fine, it's the morning after pill I have a problem with as a normal contraceptive (use the thing in cases of rape, not casual sex), that people are born homosexual & shouldn't be persectuted for it, that evolution is fact & that God created it, and that suicide does not mean automatic hell. The Church teachings on these subjects differ from my opinion, more or less.

That's it's filled with really creepy incest. Edipus creepy? Most mythology, monthesium falls under mythology. Sorry guys, we do, come to be in order that nature is explained. Zeus with his thunderbolts, Apollo's chariot tugging the sun across the heavens. I forget what tribe believed this but one indeginious tribe leaved near volcanos, and they believed the volacones were the homes of fire dragons. or were fire dragons...crud now I can't remember... sweatdrop anyhow, Monothesium, from what i can see, differs in that God doesn't explain to us how things work. We're curious creatures, He probably hoped we'd figure it out someday. The bible teaches us how to live and act among other things I'm too tired to think about. Sorry it's way past midnight where I am. Night all, if I am fortunate, I will wake tomorrow and find myself intellegnt still! 4laugh

hey! I'm not really...all that...terribly young...depending on how old person who makes such a statement is...

i personally believe suicide is stupid stare makes sense if its suicide or a lot of torture or if everything u loved and lived for died (but still that would probably motivate me, i have seen death first hand)

but anyway i believe life is a gift...... and also believe that it happened totally by chance.... we just happened to evolve into what we are now..... (and for the record if the bible was true, were adam and eve cavemen eek , moving on...) life is a gift, it totally chance that we are what we are now, that we can experience such joy, feel, and know how much we get out of life, instead of just doing what we need to survive, what im trying to get across is people take life for granted and just live life like they will get their reward after they die... i say no... your reward is life!!! live life how u want to!!!!!!!!!!!! and ending your life is like completely destroying the 1 present you really wanted for christmas xp

Yeah, theorhetically this is the only life we get so why not make the most of it? But some people fall into deep sorrow and see no way out other than death, or believe that death is the only escape from their sorrow. Though I find the action dumb, I feel pity for the poeple who are in such deep anguish they choose to take their own life. (Cult suicides are truely dumb though confused )
XD See now Creationism believers believe that cavemen never existed because they believe evolution isn't real. Therefore Adam and Eve were regualr humans like us today. Again, I believe God created evolution (XD see what I did there? clever huh? wink moving on...) because it makes sense to me that God would allow life to change and adapt as need be in order to survive the ever changing earth. heck it even says in the Bible in (2 Pt 3: cool "With the Lord one day is like a thousand years" Which means that God measures time differently than we do, which also means we shouldn't take Genesis (God creating the world & all life in 7 days) litterally. So the bible doesn't say Evolution is crap.

EDIT: 2 Pt stands for 2 Peter (second letter from Peter)

Frankly I have a huge problem with most organized religions.
I believe in a higher power, I always have, but I don't fear the higher power, I don't want someone trying to MAKE me fear a higher power, and I don't want someone trying to MAKE me dress a certain way or pray a certain way so I can join their little cult.

That's how I view religions--they're basically humongous cults.

Bible thumpers bother me the most, for obvious reasons. The Bible has some cool stories, and I believe some of the stuff probably happened--I also believe that it has been so devastatingly altered that no one really knows the real truth behind it anymore.
I also have a huge problem with the people that wrote the Bible (and rewrote it...and rewrote the rewritten parts...) because I've got a fierce feminist streak in me. I'm sure I don't have to elaborate much on that, you all seem very intelligent.

What I don't have a problem with, is the calm, personal practice of people that deeply believe in their religion, and do not try to shove it in my face. I have the utmost respect for people that let me believe what I believe.
I'm not going get up and say "You're all stupid and should believe what I believe" because that would be extremely hypocritical. I'd prefer strangers to keep out of my business!
My sister-in-law was on a crusade this Easter to convert me to Christianity, and she was trying to provoke me into a religious debate. I repeatedly tried to change the subject simply to keep family from being ripped apart. Kind of ironic how someone can say "I'd love to see you in heaven" but they're willing to risk a family feud to get there...

Creepy incest? smile Wow, but in Oedipus' case, he didn't know it. So, technically, that can't count as his fault right? biggrin

Anyway, I think Paganism is fine, as I think all other religions are fine. They can do whatever they want as long as it doesn't harm me.

That is the sad thing isn't it? The Old Testament, or Torah (In Jewdism Oh man I spelled that so badly!) was originally written in Hewbrew. Then the new testament was written in I think Greek. Then the Whole Bible was translated into Greek, then Latin (common language at the time), Then German, then English, then etc. And words and meanings get lost in translation. Some words in Greek have more meanings that the Latin version of the word. So the true meaning of that word, and perhaps the sentence the word was used in, changes. So you really shouldn't take it seriously.
Yeah I have a problem with the whole, women are beneath men deal. But I feel like that crap is more in the old testimate than in the new. Jesus treated everyone equally. He even talked with a Samaritan woman in public. (For those who don't kno, Jews didn't converse with Samaritans, and Jewish men sure as heck never talked to a woman in public) his politics were revolutionary for his time. (another reason he wasn't popular with the Pharisies)
The fact is that the Bible contradicts itself repeatedly. So you should not take it literally. And it's dumb for humans to tyell other humans they're going to hell if they don't belive in a, b, c & don't belong to religion d. It's so stupid! We're humans! What friggen right do we have to tell people they're going to hell. How the heck do we know? For all humans know, God is a turkey and heaven is only available to dogs! (bad example but still) God is supposedly a kind, loving, merciful God. That's what i grew up learning. And if that's true, why would only one group of people get into heaven? I personally believe that whether or not someone goes to heaven or hell is between them & God. And it's no one else's buisness.

Nithael, I don't know why people try to make you fear God, cause really you shouldn't. In Genesis, there's the story of the cities Sodom and Gomorrah. Everyone in those cities were commiting grave sins repeatedly. They were wicked cities. So God wanted to wipe the cities off the face of the planet. But Abraham asked Him if he would really smite both guilty and innocent. And then asked God if that he (Abraham) found 50 innocent people, would God still smite Sodom? And God told him that if Abraham found fifty, He would spare the city for the sake of the Fifty. Well Abraham then decided to push his luck and began asking "Well what if I found 45 innocent?" God replied that he would still spare the city for the 45 innocent people's sake. Abraham then continued to widdle down the number until he asked "What if there are at least 10 there?" God replied, "For the sake of those ten, I will not destroy it."
See now, that meriful God is the kind I grew up being taught about. I don't see the point of fearing God unless you're a murderer. confused
(for the record I only remember that story cause it was read a few weeks ago during Mass.)
