Beatrix was, frankly, in no real place to be starting her first class, but as usual she bore up ramrod-straight and determined and showed not one sign of weakness. She was cool as a cucumber, eyes bandaged neatly (and no sign of bags, therefore), blackboard neatly ruled and a stack of papers on her desk (which was cleaner than a bar of soap). Thwomp was already self-importantly patrolling the classroom.

Antony was the only one in the class list she knew, and Antony she welcomed: teaching first-levels mathematics was drier than dust and she could think of no real way to make any of it enjoyable, for either them or for her. Well, who came to school to have fun, anyway?

Jacoba was safely at daycare, probably having a wild time torturing the daycare crew, but she felt oddly bereft and strangely reluctant to let anybody else take her. At least with the roll numbers the hours were definitely few.

Taki stood outside in the hallway, looking back down the hall, towards papa's classroom. It hadn't been so bad thinking about just taking the one class with papa as the teacher, but now... It was numbers...

He hefted his backpack, and pressed his ears against his head, jaw set, determined to get through this, as he pushed the door open and peered in. It looked a lot like papa's room, but... What in the world was that rock?! He scuffled over towards the teacher's desk, eyes wide.

"I-is this... math class?" he mumbled, still eyeing the rock, though the question was directed at the woman behind the desk.

Antony had hung back so he could walk with Manny, his bag over his shoulder, a slightly thoughtful look on his face. School wasn't so bad, but he still had PE at the end of the day. The idea of everyone seeing him with his father--

He stopped and broke into a smile at the sight of Dr. Beatrix at the front of the class. She would be a much better teacher than his father, no doubt!

Manny was holding her bag in both hands in front of her, frowning because she knew what class was next. Math, ew. But Taki didn't seem worried, and neither did Antony, so it couldn't be as bad as she thought. She knew her numbers, but that was about it. She paused slightly behind Antony when they reacched the room, puzzled by his expression. Glancing into the room ahead of them, she whispered, "Do you know her?"

"She's a friend of my ah... uncle's," Antony whispered back. "Good morning, Dr. Beatrix," he said more loudly as he walked into the room. Then he caught sight of the board. "I mean, good morning, Dr. Darnell."

Taki turned to face Antony and Manny as they came in, and a smile broke over his features. "Hi guys... We should sit together again." He twiddled his tail in his hands for a moment, then sidled over to a chair once the rock had safely moved away, sliding into the seat.

The thought of having to go to another class drove Riley up a wall. So she had delayed going to the next room as long as possible. Which included shuffling her feet and getting a long drink of water from the fountain. She found she was getting a bit annoyed as well, since her stomach was rumbling. When was lunch? Gaaah.

She slouched into the class, her mouth twisted in a frown. Math. Gross. She hated the subject, since it just appeared to be an endless mess of numbers to her. And half the rules didn't have a reason for existing, either. They just did. Which confused her even more. Stupid mathmatics.

Dr. Darnell, that sounded kind of cool, and if she was a friend of the uncle she thought he was talking about she would definately be interesting. "Sure," she chirped to Taki, quickly shuffling over to a seat next to him. It was good to stay in compact groups when there were so few of them, it made it easier to know what was going on.

The momentary peace of the room was broken by a yowling "No!" from the hallway and what sounded like a body being dragged. A lanky, dark-haired young man appeared in the doorway and his face was grim. Just out of sight, beyond the doorjamb, his hand disappeared, apparantly having trapped something fierce. He glanced at the board and his eyebrows shot up at the sight of a clearly blind teacher. "s**t," he muttered under his breath. Then, clearing his throat, he asked, "Is this math class? I've, um..." He struggled and pulled a young boy into the classroom. With a jerk, he stood him upright and set a long-fingered hand atop the boy's golden curls. "This's Ignacio Garcia. Sorry for the noise."

One of the teacher's blonde eyebrows had shot up nearly into her hairline. "It's quite all right," she said. "You're his older brother? I'll just add him to the class listing - that's Ignacio as in the Spanish, I assume. Ignacio, please take a seat."

"Uh, sure. Older brother works." Devon crouched down to look Ignacio in the eyes. "Behave," he muttered. "I'll pick you up afterwards." Then he straightened and gave the kid a shove to a chair before beating a hasty retreat.

Ignacio rolled his eyes and called after him. "You're my -DAD-." Then he turned back to observe the other children and suddenly smiled whitely. "Hiya." Without another word, he slipped into the desk indicated and slouched.

The expression on their teacher's face was very clearly fairly unsuitable parent! as Devon escaped and Ignacio took a seat; she cleared her throat.

"As I was saying, good morning, Antony, and excellent self-correction," the bandaged woman continued - fairly genially - confirming the relationship; the little rock monster twirled near them, intent and curious, until their teacher gave a little cough and he retreated to the back of the classroom. "Time to begin. Pens out, class, and please be seated. Yes, this is Mathematics, Level One, and I will be calling the roll."

She strolled over behind her desk, and despite being totally sightless gestured towards Manuela with the stack of papers that had been on her desk. "If you could please hand one of these out to everyone, face-down on their desk? Thank you. - Blue or black pens, please, and while I call the roll you may write your name on the back of the paper. I will be giving you a quick pop quiz to discern what level you are at. Don't panic if you cannot answer all the questions: this will not affect your end grade in any way, shape or form."

She cleared her throat again. "As you can see from the board, I am Doctor Darnell, and so you may call me 'Doctor' instead of 'Miss' or 'Ms'. As you may have noticed, I am blind, but I will warn you that any thoughts towards taking advantage of this fact will lead you to copying out large portions of the dictionary for me at recess or Chinese water-torture. As I call your name out from the roll - " Inspiration! " - please call 'Present', then stand and tell the class something about yourself. Going by alphabetical order, please: Antony."

Riley had taken a seat only moments before Ignacio, and not to do so in hopes of starting the school work. No, she had wanted to get a better view of the racket so like her own...except she had known better then to force Victor to physically drag her in. One did not disobey Vic, no sir. "Nice entrance," she told him with a wide grin, acting almost like he had won an award of some sort. If his unwillingness to enter the classroom was any indication, she liked this guy already.

Though she quickly had to stop as the teacher gave instructions, much to her own dislike. She offered a colorful grimace in the teacher's direction, not even bothering to notice she was blind until she mentioned it. And a quiz? Well, she was a woman Liam would get along with.

"Present, Dr. Darnell," Antony said as ordered. His eyes moved to the flying stone creature, wondering if he should point it out to Manny. He had told her about him, at least, he thought he had. "My name is Antony and..." he thought for a long moment, "my father's name is Shade," he decided, opting for the most bland thing he could think of.
