Woman Stripped After Being Branded Witch In Jharkhand Monday 23rd of July 2007 A women was stripped and brutally beaten with hot iron rods after she was branded a witch and held responsible for the death of a woman in a Jharkhand village, police said Monday.
The incident came to light only after a week when the woman from Dadighagar in Hazaribagh district, about 130 km from here, approached some local reporters Sunday.
Basdeo Manjhi said 45-year-old Chandmuni Devi had used black magic against his wife who died of snakebite on July 14. He complained to the panchayat that ordered that Chandmuni be stripped and beaten with hot rods and sickles.
Chandmuni and her husband braved threats and filed a police complaint against six people five days later. But the police did not take any action either and the couple approached the media for help.
Witch-hunt cases are rampant in Jharkhand. More than 600 people, mostly women, have been killed in last 10 years after they were charged of practicing black magic.

There are still people who believe in black magic. It's a real sick thing but it's still going to take some time for people to learn science and reason in some places.

As barbaric as it is, one cannot discount that, although ignorant, it is their society. I personally find such acts to be wrong, but, honestly, they have to progress on their own. 600 people in 10 years is quite a small number, in fact, it boils down to one every handful of months.
besides, if you want barbaric behavior, why don't you take a look in our own system? Gitmo is no better, and the patriot act is the new McCarthyism.
I simply see parallels here.

Dronze is right about the parallels. One of the easiest ways to band a bunch of people together is by hate. They hate witches, we hate terrorists. They accuse people, we accuse people. Do any of us have any proof?

Do any of us have any proof? as a matter of fact yes we do... thats why Bush ordered wire taps on suspected terrorists so that we could have proof.

So you think that an outright violation of privacy rights, and somthing along the line of raping the bill of rights makes it right?
guess what, with enough editing, anyone can make a convincing case for calling another person a terrorist. I don't buy how that is a legal or legitimate way to apprehend these supposed "terrorists".
just because I buy a can of gas and a bag of miracle grow on the same day doesn't mean I'm making explosives, it means I'm mowing my lawn.

If that pisses you off well oh well because I for one am not doing anything that the goverment is going to care about, I doubt it but there is the possibility that the government IS monitoring me you know why? Because everyday I log onto youtube and search for tags such as Military. Helicopter. Military aircraft, and Bomb. Okay the only reason I search for such things because I have a thirst for knowledge concerning every thing about our U.S. military, and I am glad that I live in a country that has the technology to monitor such things to keep the citizens of my country safe.

Not only is it against our rights as Americans, but protecting and asserting these rights has been one of the major justifications for most, if not all, of the United States' wars. What did the millions of men (and some women) die for if not freedom?

If you feel that this is truly the case, then how far would you let it go? It starts with arresting people who are "suspect of terrorist activities", who are then tried, without their knowledge, by a secret military tribunal, and held, indefinitely, against their will while they wait to be processed. Gee... that kind of sounds like your typical dictatorship to me. I pity that you believe that the hive of greed, corruption, and self-interest that is our government is deserving of so much trust. George W. Bush has simply had his spin doctors make it seem like all this is for our own good, but, honestly, I've got conversations that I would rather keep private, secrets I'd prefer to be kept, and I really don't want to have to deal with living my life under the microscope of our government, which is supposed to be working for us, not working to censor and suppress ideologies that they don't agree with or deem "safe". This is the same government, that up through the 1980's, thought that the spread of communism had to be stopped, not for the freedom of the people in the nations involved, but because that's one less population that they could make their money off of. We've seen the dawn of a new McCarthyism, and the word of the decade is "terrorist" rather than "Communist". If our government said that it could bring prosperity through the death of one person, would you believe them? What if that one person was you? What if that one person was one of your own children, and they had to die a grusome, violent, public death? If the call was on you, ask yourself honestly, could you really do it? Blind faith in a system that has been so riddled in it's own ethical filth is not only ignorant, it's dangerous. you've proven yourself, in this singular post, to be willing to let someone else control your own thought patterns, through mass media and scare tactics that only work on those that don't have enough brainpower and will to ask a simple, 3 letter question that is the ultimate reason we aren't still a british colony... "Why?" Why are we being taxed with no representation in the places these taxes are being applied from? Why are we spending every day living in the fear of not being able to eat, since we can't afford to pay tributes to mother England? Why should we deal with it anymore? You've taken the approach of so many lazy americans, choosing to be spoon-fed the sensationalist media from one end or the other, and not bothering to question the motives of anyone but the opposition.

This might make me unpopular but a dictatorship is what we need. The way we have it now things bounce back and forth between congress and the president. NOTHING is getting done, and when you get down to it nothing will get done because the majority of politicians in the house or too hung up on party lines that they really can't see whats best for our country. Since I don't forsee congress suddenly coming to this revelation honestly a dictatoship is the best thing for America, however there would have to be some checks on the system for example if one dictator gets to out of control the people could hold an election to remove such dictator. Realistically this would not work I know but I'm saying until we have ONE party in power nothing will get done with efficiency

so, you would rather have someone telling you how to dress, what to listen to, and give up every last scrap of your individuality?
You scare me, not because your view differs from my own, but because you represent the section of mindless drones in this generation who wants everything done for them, thought included.
The government is ineffective, slow, and an absolute nightmare, but maybe, just maybe, that's on the backs of the people that voted them into power, and the fact that people still have no issue being slaves to their own television sets.
Your willingness to just give up and let someone tell you how to live your life sickens me. you've given into the propaganda that is oh-so-prevalent in modern society, and, judging by this, probably think that everything can be cured with a pill, and that books are an evil from the past.
Your own hypocrisy will be your end, Jungle Soldier. you claim to be so patriotic, and support the government that strongly, but you fail to realize that this country was built on progress and change, and is based on government by the people. choose which side of the fence you're on, or risk having everything you say being ignored as mindless drivel.

To the OP: Why do you take samples from whereever Jahrkand lies? Just go into your own country. There are several people murdered, just because of being a stranger to others, due to homosexuality, wrong religion and so on.
There is no country civilized like mankinds dream, USA, Russia, France, Germany, China, India, and all the other countries are releasing their people into damnation.
To your point of totalitarism: What are YOU saying if your leader you are standing to commits genocides? What are you saying after serving him/her after WWIII? "I knew from nothing"? People like you burned europe 70 years ago! People like you yelled "Heil Hitler!" and stabbed jews, communists, pacifists, gypsies, diseased an others into a pit and buried them!
