At the end of next month I'm going to Japan to visit my family (lucky me), and there's a little manga store a few blocks from the house where I want to buy some reading material to help me learn some kanji, grammar, and vocabulary.

I'm not familiar with Japanese books, so I need some ideas of books to look for and maybe get if it seems appropriate and I can find it.

I'm looking for manga books that are generally pretty easy to read, or have furigana next to the kanji. Also, I would prefer books in a school or some real-life setting, not fantasy, so I can learn some vocabulary that way.

I only know of some popular manga in North American culture right now, so I'll look for Ouran High School Host Club (Ouran Koukou Hosuto Kurabu) and Hana-Kimi (Hanazakari no Kimitachi e), but I'm not sure if they'll have furigana in them.

So... Criteria:
+Furigana
+No Fantasy
+If possible, a comedic and/or romantic theme? I'll probably pay more attention to it that way.

I don't think there are many people here who can speak/read japanese and no English...but I can try and translate this if there are. ^_^

I've heard from other threads/people that I should look for magazines, like Shounen Jump. So I will, I think they might sell them at the 7-11 near the house, if not in the manga store itself. Any other magazines to look out for?

Manga so Far:
-Ouran Koukou Hosuto Kurabu (Hatori, Bisco)
-Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (Nakajo, Hisaya)
-Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (Kumeta, Koji)
-Furutsu Basuketto (Takaya, Natsuki?)
-Otomen (Aya, Kanno?)

Magazines so Far:
-Shounen Jump

I have about 8000 yen to spend, all saved up from my auntie's generousity. ^-^

Why not go for some ACTUAL books? It would make more sense and you can find so much more. And you can even find books to help teach you kanji and Japanese... which I suggest.

As well, you can find stuff on www.amazon.co.jp A book for kanji I suggest is 日本語能力試験漢字ハンドブック It would help you learn better, only it gives you a basic stroke order for some in the back... not for all kanji though. And it teaches you 2040 kanji.

(にほんごのうりょくしけんかんじハンドブック)Japanese Proficiency Test Kanji Handbook

IT'S ONLY ABOUT $18-20 TOO

I can't buy online...

I have a gift card at Chapters/Indigo/Cole's, so I'll look around there, though I doubt they'll have it.

And my Japanese is too poor or casual to really understand most books, which is why I'm looking for manga. Because if all else fails, at least I'll have some pictures to help make sense of the story.

That book you can buy there. My neighbour did that for me.

You can find books with furigana... and you would have some books to improve your Japanese.

Mmm well I started off with a manga about a subject I already knew about, a Hamtaro book, actually. The only thing is I found it pretty repetitive since it was written for kids....

I bought some other really random book called P☆えんじえる... it was harder to keep my attention because I didn't know the subject. To this day I'm pretty sure I've only read through about half of the book if not less.

So my suggestion is to choose something that you know the subject of....

I hope this helps.

フルーツバスケット Fruits Basket
幽遊白書(ゆうゆうはくしょ) Ghost Files/Poltergeist Report
まもって守護月天(しゅごげってん) Guard/Protect me, Gaurdian Angel
キングダムハーツ ファイナルミックス Kingdom Hearts Final Mix
カードキャプターさくら Cardcaptor Sakura

That's all I can think of, but there's a ton at Mitsuwa here that look interesting. 3nodding

You might enjoy Otomen, which is about a feminine boy who pretends to be masculine. It's funny, it's got a romantic angle, and it's got furigana.

Thanks for all the titles so far!

I've listed some of them on the first post, along with their authors. I'll add more later, I'm a little busy right now.
