It was too hot.
… ‘Naci, a filly-mare with a mane and tail made entirely of blue flames was very rarely hot. Usually she was warm or hot, but the heat had always been comfortable. The mid-day sun in Mid-month July made for an entirely different story. Her fur had started to come in more shaggy than when she was only a year old or less. Back then her coat had made her feel almost bald with it’s smooth buzzed feeling to it. Now she had probably average length fur that drove her nearly up the wall.
A faint and not nearly cool enough breeze picked up, blowing some stale air around her and said mane seemed to hiss and nag into her ear. “Oh you be quiet. I canna change the temperature right now.”
She was standing at the edge of a forest, soaking up what little coolness the shade provided and holding her temper back so no poor group of trees or leaves lost their green… To become ashes. A slight grin split along the filly’s face and she stomped a foot. It was just a bit too warm for her to be able to go for a run happily and too many other soquilis were crowding around the stream. Her mane and tail made others shy back a bit as if she’d light them on fire if they so much as looked at her the wrong way.
Okay, so she probably would..
But that didn’t make it fair that they assumed that!
Sighing gently, she lowered her neck a bit and began to doze. Something interesting would happen.. After all, it almost always did.

Kal never had to worry too much about the heat. His white fur and glittering gold markings reflected most of the sunlight to give him an advantage over many other soquili in full sun on a day like this one where there was not a cloud in the sky.
That wasn't his only advantage, his mane had never grown out since emerging from foalhood to leave him with less mane to drag around, and his small size and delicate build was also a blessing in disguise. Even though he was often mistaken for a foal not quite grown enough to be called a stallion, the slimness he had inherited from his unicorn mother allowed heat to disperse easily from his body.
So today he left most of the shade to other creatures, and struck out across fields and clearings to enjoy the day while the sun was out. The little stallion would never object to getting more sun.
It wasn't long before he wandered into a field he was particularly fond of, since there was an abundance of of his favorite grasses and soft flowers. It would have been nicer to have someone to talk with, but everyone Kal knew was either not around, or sleeping away the heat.

Ignacia normally didn’t fuss too much because her body was incredibly pale and when she had been a true foal her coat had been almost a buzz-cut length and incredibly sleek. Time had made it grow thicker and more of a pain.
… Not that she didn’t still have the shiny-sheen to her fur. Quite the opposite when she thought about it. Aely, her two-legger, loved nothing more than to just bury her face in the silken fur and just breathe for awhile. It seemed like a weird two-legger behavior but if it meant extra grain and a warm place to sleep at night she’d sign up for the weirdo-party. Haha, Good think she didn’t talk human-speak.
Squinting a bit something shining and gold caught her eyes up ahead. What on earth was it? Tossing her head a bit and ruffling up her falmes ‘Naci began to head towards him.
It meant leaving the sanctuary that was her shade, but hell. She wanted to see why the sun was making his body seem to sparkle. The gold markings were almost metallic from across the field. “Oi! ‘ello there!” Would he stick around to talk or bolt? She was still a “dumb-kid” after all.

Kal's head shot up in an instant upon hearing someone call out, but he looked less spooked once he realized it was just a filly addressing him. For a minute he had been afraid it would be a bossy lead mare who would tell him to scram, but a filly was okay. She even looked like an older filly, which suited him just fine even if her mane was on fire-
The little stallion immediately realized exactly what he was looking at, and he tossed his head nervously. He was not a tame horse, so he was not accustomed to fire and tended to shy away from it. Even if he did seek out the very edges of a two legger camp at night to be within sight of the flames, it hadn't made him any more comfortable with them.
Still, it would be rude of him to run, even though he was being approached by a filly with her mane all on fire. He pawed at the ground with a cloven hoof and shifted nervously, causing his markings to glitter as the sun hit them. "H-hello," he replied, watching closely to see what she would do.

Ignacia watched with more than a little bit of curiosity as the stallion danced a bit and she slowed down a bit from her walk. It was too hot anyway to work herself up trying to make friends, perhaps he was just an unfriendly fellow and it’d be to her safety to run for it. He did have a rather sharp and pointy horn on his head! Probably would hurt if.. Oh no.. no ideas like that!
‘Naci came to a stop a safe distance from him and just scented the air. He didn’t smell very much like two-leggers or fires the way she carried the scent around like a bit of a marker. Aely, her two-legger, was good to her and in exchange ‘Naci did, well, nothing! She was free to come and go as she pleased and that worked out just fine in her book.
Maybe he was just young like her? His body didn’t have the solidness or the proportion like her uncles and dad and his wariness hinted at age. Bah! No use in just staring at him like some oddity while he stares at her much in the same manner. Truth be told, being stared at was something of a regular for her. “Aye-aye.. ‘Naci’s me, an’ you?”

"I-I'm Kal, pleased to meet you," he said, more by route than anything as he tried to compose himself. He could not help but blink at her unusual mane though. Apparently the distance between them felt safe enough for him too, because he soon managed a slightly nervous smile.
"I've never seen anyone with a mane of fire before, if you don't mind me saying," he continued, dropping his head sheepishly as an apology for staring as he had. Luckily he didn't drop his head far enough or at the right angle to be taken as a warning at the point of his horn. Nor did he notice her stares while he was so intent on looking at her mane, otherwise he would have known at once it was his dainty figure she was looking at. He was fairly sensitive about his small size.

‘Naci cocked an eyebrow at him and continued to keep a safe distance from the stallion. He probably didn’t naturally stutter which made the nervous tension between her and him feel so much more tangible. The smile helped her relax a bit and she tossed her head up a bit and grinned at him.
“S’alright. Ye dun need ter be afraid o’ it.” She had learned to sleep even when it felt bright outside (because of the light) and she’d also learned to expect at least some mention of the oh.. Whole fire thing.” Actually, the people the she had let touch it usually grinned or laughed a bit. The fire would dance up their noses and tickle, never injure. ‘Naci didn’t really care much about size, she was just worried that he didn’t like her for some reason. Wild Soquilis did still exist in the sub-culture and it seemed she had found one. Did she ask for an autograph?

Kal seemed to relax a bit, and his smile came easier. If the filly said not to worry, he would try not to. He would have taken a step closer, but she seemed wary of him, and she also smelled like the two-legger camp he spent his nights near. He knew some of the same scent lingered on him from those nights, but this filly smelled like she lived in the thick of it.
"Is it... warm?" he asked next, glancing up at the cloudless sky and fluffing is wings slightly. He kept them held slightly away from his body to let any breeze blow through and cool him further, but there wasn't much breeze to speak of.

‘Naci smiled at him as he relaxed more and even propped up one of her hind legs. They’d probably chat for awhile which was great for her! Meeting new people and chatting served to be quite useful all-in-all. Was it warm? Her amber eyes seemed to go a bit faraway, trying to think of the correct response for how exactly it felt. She’d grown up with it… “real” hair was weird to her!
“I suppose so, but nae really moreso than those who have long hair.” Her mamma usually got over-heated where ‘Naci could last longer in the heat without being too bothered. “Sometimes I think it tries ter cool me down.” Or perhaps her body just had a higher tolerance to heat?
“I wish I knew me mam or dah.. So I’d understand.. Ye ken?”

"It's... fire, shouldn't it be warm?" He asked, finally taking a hesitant step closer.
He thought fire was very warm. Even though he had never been close to one of the little glowing flame pits that the two leggers used, he had once seen them put all the little flames into one huge one for a night while they pranced around like foals in a patch of honeysuckle. Being a smart stallion, he reasoned the unusual heat he had felt on his face that night was from the flames.
Unfortunately the filly's odd way of speaking had him slightly confused. He did understand how knowing one's mother and father would give one more knowledge about themselves, but...
"Ken?"

“I suppose it should.. But I canna say.” ‘Naci simply smiled when he moved closer.
True fire, made of orange flames and stuff was usually really hot. That was what the “Burn” was used for after all! No use being dumb about what was what and why things were as they were. Her mind ached a bit after thinking that particular sentence and it took a second for her to focus back on what was being said. Kal’s eyes seemed to be rather focused on her hair. The poor guy.
Oh lord. Her accent came from her parents, and the people that had raised her. Her mother spoke “properly,” but the others around her had had the same way of speech. “Err… Aye.”
“It means.. Uh Nu-Oh” She flinched, but he’d probably understand that?

"Oh, yes, I know," Kal said now with much enthusiasm now that his confusion was cleared up. "I would have been very frustrated about... some things if I hadn't known how my parents were." By 'things' he was referring to his small, delicate build, it would have been simply infuriating to grow up small and not know why.
He picked up a leg as though he was going to take another step forward, but then he hesitated and put it back on the ground. "Can I... touch it?" He asked, equally hesitant. He knew mares could be finicky about who got into their personal space, and fillies were just little mares, so he didn't want to mess up just for the sake of his curiosity. "If you don't know for sure, I could tell you if it's warm."

He was beginning to relax. Which in turn made ‘Naci relax almost completely. Her hind hoof rested lazily and she had a sweet innocent smile on her face. Lovey, her mother, nagged that she accepted others too easily, but ‘Naci didn’t see any fun in being uptight for a prolonged amount of time. It would give her bad knees or something. Ha.
She noticed his movement and both ears pricked forward to hear what he was probably going to say since the movement wasn’t completed. “Ayeaye. It’ll not hurt ye.” ‘Nacie was proud to know that in almost two years she had burnt less than ten things and nothing recently. Temper tantrums had resulted in some singed grass and stuff. “It’ll be good ter know if it’s warm or if I’m jest used to it.” Actually, she didn’t care.. But knowledge was knowledge.

It seemed like things were getting easier, if Naci was more relaxed when Kal relaxed, then her own casual state seemed to make the little stallion feel more at ease. He thought perhaps such an easygoing fllly would be more forgiving if he did put a hoof wrong, so he was less inclined to worry as he carefully stepped forward to appease his curiosity.
Although he was still a little hesitant, he slowly brought his nose within range of her unusual mane to see what it felt like. After all, if it was hot he wouldn't want to move too fast and singe his muzzle, nor did he want to startle the filly any while she was being so nice and letting him nudge at her mane.
