‘Welcome to the Landing’, a dark, badly illuminated sign appears to your eyes. You feel ill; you remember some… tragedy which let you into this underground world. The air is damp, and drops of water ‘plink’ on the concrete. You hear footsteps which abruptly stop when you start walking towards the sound of the person. You hear them clear their throat, and ask, “Are you human?” You blink, and respond, “Of course.” And suddenly, a sigh of relief is heard.
“Thank you. My name is Daniel Grey. You can never be too sure about things down here.” Daniel steps out from the darkness; you can’t see him very well, but you can see the glint of dull blonde hair and the shine of glasses. He states loudly, “I don’t have much time. Let me explain things to you….”
“I’m not going to ask you your name right now. This is the city of Utopia. It’s been abandoned for years. Something… went wrong. I think it was an outbreak of disease, and it spread to most of the city. I don’t know how you got here, but everyone I’ve met here had something terrible happen to them. As you saw when you got here, this is built under the ocean. What I read in journal entries suggests that scientists got chased out here in an exile from their county. I mean, I don’t exactly know what county- I do believe it was in Europe. But, that’s not quite the point. There are… creatures and strange people here. Or, at least I think they used to be human.” He automatically flushes, and ceases to talk about those ‘humans’.
“Anyway, these creatures are extremely violent. I’ve almost been killed by them- most of them look like animals, except all… dead. They look ripped up and mutilated, dripping blood, and they look extremely sick. It looks like they have bad inflammation, and drip strange fluids. And some just look like animals and people sewn up together in weird shapes. I’m not going to explain about them more than that. Here’s a map, and a weapon. I’ll see you later. Don’t wander into bad parts of the city. More people are walking around. I’m sure they’ll help you.”
And with that, he walks into the darkness. You are alone.
