Ehhh...I'm not too keen on the classic black metal bands, or the singular genre in general. It's good when mixed with other genres- like blackened death. Necrophobic FTW.

i like blackened death too...and just regular old death...

but there's something about black metal - that raw, unrefined, dark energy - that death metal doesn't have. yes, death has energy, but it's too refined, too technical. it's still good, but i prefer the rawer energy of black metal.

I'm kinda picky when it comes to pure death, too. I'm more drawn to melodic and progressive death as a general guideline. And my biggest beef with black is the vocals and lyrics. The vocals usually don't have as much aggression and intensity, and most lyrics deal with some sort of occult or "blasphemous" content...though it's not like death is all that much better in that regard. sweatdrop

oh i do prefer death/blackened death vocals to just that straight screech that ihsahn from emperor did in the early days...

but not all of black metal is satanic or blasphemous. when you understand the genre a little better, you see how a lot of bands write about pagan spirituality, older folklore and mythology, or nature in general. other bands focus on creating a dark feel with their music, but still stay away from the satanic messages.

while satanism/blasphemy are still around in black metal, it is not as big a part of the genre as many seem to think it is.

the thing i can't stand is NSBM. their ideology is totally ******** up.

Well, I understand that much. I know that bands like Borknagar or Naglfar are more oriented towards pagan subject matter. And when I said occult, I meant to encompass that whole sphere of spiritual beliefs. I think that only a few of the old school black and death bands (Bathory, Dissection, Mayhem, etc.) were really honestly trying to convey some sort of Satanic message. A lot were just pretenders looking to make, as you said, a dark atmosphere.

And of course, they're Nazis. xd

well the only nazis are the NSBM guys...and the late euronymous from mayhem. but i have no respect for those guys, either musically or otherwise...

but yeah, i guess black metal is kind of for people already interested in those subjects. i'm not an occultist, but i do find occult literature fascinating, in the same way that i find the apocryphal texts in the bible and the dead sea scrolls fascinating - they're these well told tales that are just...really interesting hahaha i guess i can't explain my fascination...

Yeah, that's what I meant. The NSBM guys. But it seems like homophobia is/was pretty widespread among that sort too. ...Like the late Mr. Nodveidt of Dissection... rolleyes

For me, it's not the content that I find disagreeable. Hell, I realize that most bands just do the anti-Christianity and occult stuff as part of the act. It's integral to the sound and atmosphere they're trying to create. Dimmu Borgir (okay, bad example of real black metal xp ) comes to mind. I like Necrophobic and Aeon, and they have some pretty blasphemous stuff in their repertoire. But they don't go burning down churches in the countryside. stare The major beef I have is that many of those bands simply don't agree with me from a musical standpoint. Not an ideological one.

oh god, the church burnings...i agree with venom - the point of music is to entertain the fans, not to rot behind bars...

and if you don't like the music, no one said you had to. i was just explaining why i did.

I guess they just took their obsession too far...

sweatdrop Sorry. Went into a rant-mode for a bit. *sighs* It's a shame not much discussion like this happens around here anymore. I know I'm not one of the original members, but I miss this place.

haha don't apologize, that was some of the first actual conversation i've seen in a while in this guild.

i know what you mean about missing it. i joined just before they put the "non-metal" subforum in, and had a lot of fun talking in both the metal and non-metal threads...and now, the guild is pretty much dead...such a disappointment crying

I recently got ahold of Ordo Ad Chao and I must say it is one of their best albums. I reall feel this true sense of fear and horror from it. They've taken post BM to a whole new level. One that includes abstract musicianship (i know alot of other BM bands that are experimental but none of them actually sound like they composed every bit of it) and awesomely gnarly quality.

I also got subliminal genocide by Xasthur. Great music, very dark and dismal.
