Figured this would be interesting to see what kind of music our fellow guildies are listening to. Maybe we'll even find something new that we hadn't heard before.

Here is where we can review CD's we own or recently bought/aquired or bands we find online and find out if they are even worth the listening to!

I'm head over heels for a song by The Postal Service called "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight".

It's a really pretty song with interesting lyrics and a good melody and beat and all that jazz.

I really think it's worth a listen and spot on your ipod's( or whatever mp3 player you use) playlist

If you want to write a review, simply write a post with the artist, a link (hopefully a band site or a streaming music site) and if you can, send me a link of the post (when you post your review, copy the URL and send it to me so i can add it to the reviews, that way instead of searching the thread, just click the link and itll send you right there.)

Against Me! - "New Wave"
Genre: Punk Rock
Released: July '07
Music Page
Tracks: 10

Florida's Against Me! just put out their 3rd major CD and its slightly surprising. They are about as punk rock as you can get in this day and age, rebellion, anti-government and musically stripped... but this time, they deliver a softer/lighter/happier edge from their previous releases "Searching for a Former Clarity" "As the Eternal Cowboy" and "Reinventing Axel Rose."
It doesn't make them any less of what they were known for. Classic blazzing rythm guitars in "White People for Peace" and "American Abroad" bring back the great feel of old AM! but fit right in with the almost dancy feeling tunes "Stop!" and others. They even step towards what many consider "emo" territory with "Borne on the FM Waves" (featuring Tegan from Tegan and Sarah) but it doesnt come off as whiney as one would think.
Tom's growling voice brings the simple and catchy messages across, making the listener feel if they are right at their live show (which is amazing to watch.)
It doesn't bring anything particularly new to the table from what they are known for but that doesnt make it any less of an enjoyable effort. I prefer this over their previous releases actually.

Final Score: 8.5 out of 10
Reviewers Favorite Tracks: "New Wave" . "Stop!" . "Thrash Unreal" . "White People for Peace"

Reel Big Fish - "Monkeys for Nothin' and the Chimps for FREE!"
Genre: Ska/Punk
Released: July '07
music page
Tracks: 17 (even comes with DVD for "Making Of Monkeys!")

It's been several years since the OC, California Reel Big Fish had released anything since the glory days of the Baseketball movie and the heyday of the Backstreet Boys (which both bands were part of the same label oddly enough).
But since being dropped from that label you would think they would be angry....its quite different actually. Most of the material on "Chimps!" is oddly upbeat and about having fun or getting incredibly blitzed at a party.
They trade mark sense of humor and writing is still prevalent with songs like "My Imaginary Friend" and "Please Don't Tell Her I Have a Girlfriend"
Personally the first 2 songs on the CD bring the biggest change in the cd musically. "Party Down" runs the gammet from Punk to Dub to country and even old school hip hop and screamo/metal during the chorus, showing off the bands skill as musicians so they arent labeled off so quickly as another "ska band". "Another F.U. Song" is a quick ditty that allows you to scream it out at the top of your lung and barely stop laughing as well (when the opening song starts 'HEY KIDS! It's time to use the F-word!' you know you are in for fun.)
Past that they fall into the same good ole vibe that made them such a underground favorite in the first place, which isnt a bad thing. in fact its a breath of fresh air in all the more serious and experimental sounds going on right now.
Besides.....where else can you wonder "Why Do All Girls Think They Are Fat?"

very true.
i download more music than i care to realize. but then i realize that these bands make so little money from their tours and cds that i cant help but support if they are good enough.

besides reading a review from someone you "know" probably means more than reading about it from some critic whos too full of themself from a major magazine.

Gogol Bordello - "SUPER TARANTA!"
Genre: Punk/Folk
Released: July '07
Music Page
Tracks: 14

Gypsy Punk.
That is the self described word of what Gogol Bordello is and it fits quite perfectly. Listening to the Tracks on "SUPER TARANTA!" make you feel like you can fit into a mosh pit or at a old world party.
Using instruments like accordians, violins, and anything they can find to drum on, GB craft 14 songs that cover issues like religion, finding ones self, government, and the like...not to mention that the lyrics are split half english-half...um....whatever language the lead singer/guitarist is from. Part of the time it is almost impossible to figure out what he is saying but you dont care because there so much else going on in the song. And when the chorus hit, the grab you and pull you in line with the other dancers as you "da de dadeda" along.
There isn't much I can say on a band like this other than the fact that you really have to hear it for yourself. Clash fans, to oddball band lovers, to anti-"whatever" kids (even if your are none of the above.) can find something they like on this disc.

Silverstein - "Arrivals & Departures"
Genre: Alt Rock/Screamo/Emo
Released: July 3rd '07
Music Page
Tracks: 11

A walk down the beat path with a slightly different skip is what Silverstein’s latest CD feels like.
Their 3rd Victory release hits all the right chords as former and current labelmates, driving guitars, fret tapping till the cows come home, and 70/30 singing screaming, and as much as Silverstein has done on “A&D”…it almost feels like a small step back. “Discovering the Waterfront”, their second release is probably a shining example of how to do things right without coming off as another “cookie cutter” band. And while I think “Arrival’s & Departures” is a fairly good CD….it quite cant recapture the same feeling or elevate it higher.
What’s drawn me to the Canadian quintet is the rawer feeling they brought to the genre most commonly thought of as “little brother” to punk, metal, and hardcore. The writing is quite well at times, which extends into the realms of history and literature than just the standard “girl who broke my heart” and “life blows” style. Unfortunately it is sometimes rather inconsistent and cliché in certain songs.
It’s worth a burn copy from a friend or cheap download but I don’t think “Arrivals & Departures” was as great as it could have been (maybe I held a high hope. But prepared to be a little disappointed if you are a Silverstein fan….hopefully the live show will make up for this.)

If you want to be cooler than pawntakesknight then you'll need to follow my instructions very closely!

Step 1: Purchase or download the Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare, the A.K.A.s - White Doves & Smoking Guns, and Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights.

Step 2: Read my review posted just below this step.

Review: Although my band-list isn't quite as long as pawn's, nor are my reviews as indepth; can you just do me a huge favor - and do what I suggest (for just this once)?

I promise you'll enjoy sounds that are much more eclectic, intelligently driven, and -to be honest- I'm not going to market another selling point, I'm just going to let the music speak for itself.

Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my !a**!, my list will trump teh taker-of-the-knight's compilation, rewarding you with a rad soundtrack just for your summer enjoyment.

Step 3: Rock out.

Will Cross
