Chapter 1: Demon Child

The night was full of evil…darker then any night…clouds began to cover the stars that show those who dare to travel in dangerous darkness. The cricket’s song slowly died as they could sense danger that had come. The wind blew strong, carrying the souls from lifeless bodies; the fresh sent of human blood followed through the forest…Frightened screams echoed…so did the sound of flames burning those who had felt safe in their homes. Oh, how I wonder…what is causing these humans so much suffering…?

My trance was broken by the sound of what seemed to be horses coming in my direction. I had opened my blood thirsty eyes and looked up. “Riders…” As they got in my view, I had gotten myself ready, jumped off of the large rock and waited for them to stop before me. The wind had picked up, so I took out a red ribbon and placed it around my forehead. No one could really see my hair in the dark; an ash black color.

“Whoa!” Came a deep voice upon the horse at the front. I watched and waited until he had gotten off of his horse. The man stood high, with a large dark blue cape with a hood over his head. He jumped off and pulled his hood down. He was old, but not that old. He had grays hairs hidden within his dark brown hair, but you could see them clear as day, even in the night. He looked at me very seriously. The way his face gave away the expression, his eyes stand out the most. Himself and his father before him had the same color of eyes. Earthy green eyes; if his father was still alive, people could tell they were related. Normal humans couldn’t have colored eyes; it was only demons that had the privilege of colors. Humans only had dark brown eyes.

He turned and walked over to another horse, helped a woman off of it, and walked her over to me. I watched her take her hood off of her head as well. She was different, she wasn’t even human. She was the last of her kind, a rare but gentile creature. She had fish like fin for ears, ocean blue hair and tempting but empty white eyes.

She held her hands out very gently with tears filling her eyes. “Zero…I beg of you…please take care of my child!” I looked at her, then the man beside her. “What make you think I might not kill it?” The man moved part of the blanket that surrounded the baby. “You wouldn’t kill it because you wouldn’t kill a fellow demon! And you also wouldn’t kill her child.”

I took the baby from her carefully. It began to cry as it felt its mothers touch slipping away. He was right, I wouldn’t. Not only because it’s her child, also because it’s a demon, and not human. “Does it have a name?” She chuckled and whipped her eye. “Yes, she does…Her name is Midoriko Kuronew, the last water demon!” I didn’t know what she meant, nor did I want to think about this one being the last one.

“Zero, now go! We must try and stop the creature destroying our home. Farewell and take very good care of our daughter…”

I nodded, and turned around. But before I left, I spoke a few last words to them. “Good luck Damien. Don’t die on me.” I ran through the forest. And that was the last time I have ever seen them again. “This is never the end…it’s only the beginning!”

Chapter 2: Neko

Midoriko threw a rock at my head as I sat in the tree. She probably though I was asleep, or trying to ignore her. Well…maybe I was…I couldn’t help but smirk at the thought of her getting pissed off and trying to throw something bigger at me. She saw the smirk that grew on my face, and she began to yell at me.

“Zero! I know you’re not asleep! Get out of the tree before Ketu becomes impatient!” She paused for a moment. I open one of my blood red eyes and moved down until she was in my view. “Mido, he’s always like that…and besides, why does he need me anyways?”

A large roar came from inside the large barn like room attached to the cabin. “ZERO!” Midoriko sighed. “Well, you’ll find out soon enough." She turned around and began to walk, but she paused as I began to speak to her. “And where do you thin your going?” She didn’t turn around, “To the shore.” and continued walking.

I jumped out of the tree and walked into Ketu’s den. He looked pretty pissed off, but between us, that’s nothing new. He peered down at me and snarled. I cleared my throat. “Something wrong old friend?”
“Not really. Just heard you were still asleep, that’s all. I thought shouting would wake you up.”

“Heh, I wasn’t sleep, just relaxing. Also wondering why Damien would let me suffer with such an annoyance.”

Ketu shook his head. “She isn't an annoyance; you’re just stubborn and lazy. Also you have horrible timing…”

“Why?” I didn’t understand what he meant by that, until I heard the sound of someone clearing their throat. “Damn it…” I slowly turned around and saw Midoriko tapping her foot and glaring at me.

She stopped for a moment; silence filled the room. It felt kind of awkward, so I just sighed and walked out of the room. After I walked out, I could hear both of them bursting out in laughter. ‘Well, what ever tickles their fancy…’
