Intro


“Quite honestly, I don’t think we’re ever going to be prepared for what we see up there.” A faint whisper was about as loud as Elder Matthew would talk. Visibly fatigued, he brought the iron fork to his lips and took one more bite of the mushroom. He gathered some strength to make sure everyone could hear his joke. “At least we’ll be able to find some tastier food!” The room erupted with laughter, mostly out of respect for the old man.
Elder Matthew was the fifth leader of the Subhumus. For nearly three hundred and fifty years, their peaceful existence was all under the surface of the world. Driven from above ground by an awful plague, a group of about 600 people went underground and have lived there ever since. They dug deep tunnels and made a large city out of the dirt and stone and roots. Too scared to come back up until recently, they have gathered enough courage to send a group of their toughest men and women to find civilization.
Matthew was in a key dinner meeting with the leaders of the people, the Council. The air had a tension; everyone was restless. The killer plague had been so devastating that going to the surface scared many- even though all present were born long after the events occurred. The stories of death were passed down from generation to generation. How else would people know that there was another world above their heads, above their dirt and rock ceiling?
“As you all know, we’re here to discuss how this is all going to work. My grandson Kai has volunteered to lead the group going up. He’s here today to present the plan.”
People stirred in their benches as Kai stood up from his seat at the end opposite of Matthew. Looking about 20, he was a spitting image of his grandfather at that age. He was a natural leader and a good choice; people easily listened to his instructions.
“Hello everyone. What we intend to do is find new types of food like the ones in the Ancient Volumes and bring them back. Much more importantly, find people on the surface and a place where we can live, if the world above is livable. It’s going to be rough adjusting to the climate and the abundance of fresh air, but once we get used to it we should thrive. I’ve assembled a team of men and women that I’m sure can handle this task with me. Expect us to be back in 3 months. Are there any questions?”
An old woman raised her hand, and with a nod from Kai she stood. “This regards Tanner Thorne.” At mention of the name many of the Council exchanged uncomfortable glances. This was a topic not discussed much.
Tanner Thorne went above on his 25th birthday, the only man to do so, as of yet. He didn’t tell anyone, only leaving a note saying he had gone above and they could join him if they wished. He was friends with many, and so they worried for his safety in the unknown of the surface. A very enigmatic man, no one really knew why he went up. A common guess was that he wasn’t satisfied with life as it was.
Kai took a deep breath and answered. “If we find him, we’ll bring him when we come back here. Before that, he can just travel with us. Of course, this all assumes that he is willing to join us in the first place.” A sigh of relief was had by many, but they were still doubtful he would be found.
“This concludes our meeting, thank you all for attending.” Kai got up and walked to his quarters.

Reason for going above: His grandfather told him about the trip and he volunteered to be the leader, mostly because Tanner was his best friend and he hopes someday they will find him. He also wants to find other people on the surface so they can tell him what has been going on all these years.

Appearance: Andrea has short black hair that grows a bit spikey, deep dark-green eyes, and soft white skin that has a few tattoos here and there. She usually wears a long-sleeved shirt and faded blue pants with boots, leather fingerless gloves, and a necklace with a dragon pendent.
Weapon(s): Andrea has a sword that she always carries with her with a unique light-blue blade and she also hides other weapons, such as daggers, on varies parts of her body.
Reason for Going Above: Andrea's father had always wanted to go above, but he passed away before he could do so leaving her and her older brother James behind.

Appearance: Evacy
She looks like that, except she has green eyes and jet black hair.
Weapon(s) and Possessions: An empty satchel, two daggers, and many darts, which are tipped with poison, paralysis, or sleep gel.
Reason for Going Above: Evacy hates the dank smell, the stale air, and the taste of the food. She's restless underground, and hopes that going up will have different foods, and new adventures.

Character Name: Lilith
Character Age: 22
Appearance: Standing at 5’7, Lilith has always been an active person, and is therefore a bit more muscular than most girls her age. Her hair is a deep royal blue, looking almost black without the proper light. Slanted eyes, set in a determined look, they’re a grayish green color; very expressive. Her hour glass figure isn’t overly curvy, but is enough to let you know she’s female from a good distance away.
Weapon(s) and Possessions: She doesn’t carry weapons, opting instead to use her surroundings to her advantage. She does however carry a picture of her family and a journal, so she can write about her many adventures around their underground city.
Reason for Going Above: Never having experienced the fight from so long ago, she was never affected by the stories the way others were, taking it more as something that happened before. The sadness her family exhibits about their situation however, make Lilith want to do what she can to better them. She feels by going above and helping to find new foods and civilization, she will directly be helping her family’s life be improved. Not one to turn down adventure, she also she’s this as an opportunity to explore a new world and make new discoveries.

Character Age: 20
Appearance: The most common look of Shougo but sometimes he wares a cloak and a black t-shirt and the same jeans as in the picture above, But one thing is for sure he always wares his hat.
Weapons: Spiked boots (see picture above) and two gloves that have blades attached to them (also see above picture). Shougo also carries two daggers.
Possessions: Extra set of clothing, a few tools and a book to keep himself occupied if things get boring.
Reason for Going Above: To see whats there, and to get/see some new stuff.

Appearance: Claire is a petite girl, with flaming red hair and chocolate brown eyes. She has tanned skin and delicate features, and people often take her to be younger than she is. She usually dresses a green simple dress.
Weapon(s) and Possessions: She has a quarterstaff which is a family heirloom from the days before the descendant. She also carries a small leather bag where she keeps her private journal and a parafrenalia of medical provisions - mostly mushrooms and such.
Reason for Going Above: Claire has studied all her life to be a healer, and always wants to help people. She has grown up listening to her mother's lullabies about the outside world and her deepest wish is to see the sky.

Reason for Going Above: Alyce is curious about the world 'up there', being that he's lived his whole life underground. He was simply bored of his life and yearned for something more. He's often mistaken for a girl, so he hopes the world up there can help him.

He stands about 5'11'' tall, 145lbs, and has a flexible body. He usually wears a jet-black coat unzipped with a gray t-shirt under it ; he usually doesn't mind the heat. He mostly dresses for some kinda of dirty work. He also carries a locket that he has hidden by his shirt
Weapon(s) and Possessions: He carries a small sliver knife for hunting mostly. he also carries basic supplies such as water, preservatives, blankets, some flints for fire making, and some metals just case anything needs mending. He also carries many empty containers to carry back anything he finds on the surface to bring back with him.
Reason for Going Above: His father is ill and needs to be treated but they don't have anywhere near enough money for a cure. He hopes to find objects that he could sell for a good profit or maybe an alternative cure for his father. He also wishes to see what he can learn from the upper world on their metal works.

Appearance: A tall slender man, Pix carries all the airs of a charming rogue, His slicked back black hair, long face, and pointed chin framing ice blue eyes.
Weapon(s) and Possessions: For clothing he has a dark maroon cloak with a suit of worn old leather amour underneath.
Reason for Going Above: Pix is very... Odd. He has no real reason. Boredom mostly is what drives him, though deeper reasons might be behind it, he himself would not know.

Appearance: She has long blond hair, which it’s true length is hidden by her hair always tied back in a white ribbon. Her eyes are exciting seashore blue, typical for her confident and lively nature. Her skin is a little pale, from of course not seeing natural light. She wears a pair of dusty dark blue pants, which are tight around her legs, a set of black boots go over them. Her top is white and sleeveless, with blue lines at the hem lines.
Weapon(s) and Possessions: Two twin sliver blades, both of them are blue rimmed, encrypted in delicate designs and runes. She carries small food supply and water on multiple pockets on her belts.
Reason for Going Above: Her intentions aren’t clear, but most say it’s because of her own thrill-seeking and curious nature, while others hold suspicions against her.

Character Name: Catriona Marvalo
Character Age: Only just turned 18
Appearance: An incredibly fair skinned girl, though with a slight smattering of freckles, undiscernable from a distance, light, blue-grey eyes with a curious, sort of innocent expression, and auburn hair braided loosely at one side of her head. As a serving girl she wears a simple, brown underbust bodice that cinches at the sides, back, and shoulders with a full green skirt, all over a worn chemis. A green muffin cap on top of her almost-orange hair completes a uniform of servitude.
Weapon(s) and Possessions: An attack a few years ago taught her to carry a smile knife in her corset, with the blade no longer than her hand. Otherwise all her possessions are in a small trunk at the foot of her cot.

Appearance: He stands at 6 feet tall. He holds his hair back in a long brown pony tail. His arms are very thin making him look useless in a fight. Though due to his long black robe the only characteristics you can make out are his light skin and firm yet gentle brown eyes.
Weapon(s) and Possessions: He carries with him a razor sharp dagger on each thigh and a claymore on his back everything but the handle of his claymore is concealed by his pitch-black hooded robe.

Character Age: 26
Appearance: He’s a little under six feet tall. His body isn’t really muscular, but is more thin. He has a scar across his chest which still pains him every once in a while and a few small scars on his right arm and face. His left arm hangs limply from his shoulder. It was almost shattered during a fight and has never been the same. He has some control with it, but not much. He wears earthy colors, brown pants, a dark green shirt, olive shoes, and he has brown/tan hair which usually looks like he just woke up.
Weapon(s) and Possessions: Gregor caries with him a repeating crossbow and a chain that he uses for close combat. The chain is wrapped around his right arm when he’s not using it.

Appearance: Ryken is a little taller than six foot tall with a medium build. He has dark brown eyes, and brown hair. He usually wears his hair reasonably long, with the tips hanging around the middle of his ears and, if he doesn't do anything, it often falls down into his eyes as well.
Weapons: For weaponry, he carries a pair of longswords, identical in every way, including the green runes engraved on the blades and handles. He has a moderately sized set of throwing knives as well.
Possessions: He wears a rather thick leather chestpiece, long leather gauntlets that run up to his elbows, and a pair of sturdy leather boots. He has a couple pairs of green, cloth pants and wears a green coat that trails at his ankles. He has a large pack and keeps a stock of various useful things, including a journal, cloth strips, emergency rations, among other things.

Character Age: 20
Appearance: Leszya has pale gray eyes and black hair, the latter of which is worn long in a few hundred small dreadlocks. Her skin is deeply tanned. She wears a plain woven shirt and her shorts, boots, and full length jacket are all a dark brown leather.
Weapon(s) and Possessions: She carried a shoulder bag that typically contains whatever food she collects, whatever trinkets she can sell, and a set of three daggers. This bag has a compartment that doubled as a quiver for her arrows. She carries a bow strapped to her back at all times.

Kai met the participants in the chamber that preceeded the hallway and eventually the tunnel to the surface. He was generally friendly, but today he was obviously cold and full of stress. His arms crossed under a dark green cloak that fell over his boots, he looked up and the men and women.
"All of you are here. Good. I'll skip all the speeches and whatnot. I just want to get the starting over with. Follow me to this tunnel. Once we're outside, there's no turning back so make sure you want to come."
He walked briskly to the end of the tunnel, poking his head outside. He signaled for the group to proceed.
It took a minute for them all to adjust their eyes to the bright light of day. Outside the tunnel was a sparse forest with a river running through. None of them had actually seen this scenery in person before, just learned about it in school. It was wonderful to look at, and Kai took a minute to take it all in.
"Quite different from our home under the earth, isn't it?" He smiled for a moment. "We'll follow this river," he said, pointing, "until the sky gets dark, and then it becomes hard to see. Then we'll use wood from the trees to start a fire and sleep until the sky is bright."
He started walking as the others followed. After several miles of walking and some rests, night approached and they set up their sleeping arrangements on the ground.
Kai rested on his mat, very tired. He didn't try sleeping yet.

Evacy had to blink several times before she could adjust to the bright light outside, and even then, she had to shade her eyes. Walking for an extended amount of time never bothered her, and it didn't now. It was just that she was unaccustomed to the brightness, and all the new sights. She had never imagined that trees could grow so tall. Evacy breathed in deeply, at the scent of other things, not just the dank smell of the earth. When they had stopped for the day, Evacy was just fine. Her eyes felt more comfortable at the night, and the darkness was welcoming. "It's too bright up here." She thought out loud. She saw one of the group, (Andrea?) going towards the river. Debating whether or not to follow, Evacy's parched throat demanded to try out the river water.

Andrea blinked when she got to the river, rubbing the back of her neck. It felt like someone was watching her..she turned her head a bit to look back at the camp, blinking at the sight of the two watching her. Her pale cheeks turned a bit red as she turned her head back forward, her shy nature getting the better of her. She kneeled down beside the river, cupping her hands to scoop some water and lightly splash her face for it felt so hot being in the sun rather than in the cool, dark tunnels.

He looks up at the night then back at her. "hmm... sure..." he says standing up then extending his hand to help her up off the ground. "Your right tho... it is really warm up here... but still..." he puts his hand out to feel the breeze. "Its also a lot cooler then the tunnels as far as ventilation goes" he states and looks back up at the night sky. "I thought of the stars and the moon being bigger tho..." he says almost to himself and in a whisper.

She could hear footsteps behind her, but she didn't turn to look as she herself took a drink from the river's cool water. It's so nice up here.. she thought as she stared at the moon's reflection in the water. Why wouldn't they have sent someone sooner..? If they had, maybe we could be living here.. she thought as she gently pawed at the water's surface.
