I was watching the news the other day and I saw this story on ABC Wold news about a jumping fish that can break your bones. I told my BF about it and he didn't believe me, he thought I was watching fox news.... xp Anyhow I found the article and thought I'd share it with you guys.
The Jumping Gulf Sturgeon in the Suwannee River Can Weigh 300 Pounds, and Can Shatter Bones on Impact.[X]
Scientists don't know why the Gulf sturgeon jump, (do they know why any fish jumps) but it is something to marvel at when your not getting hit by one.
There was a lady that was knocked unconcious after colliding with an airborne jumping sturgeon. It sliced open her tounge and four fingers were severed, only three were able to be reatached.
A young girls bone was shattered tearing a main artery in her leg.
These are big fish, upto 8feet long, the species -- the Gulf sturgeon -- winters in the Gulf of Mexico and swims up river in the spring to spawn. The Gulf sturgeon is one of the oldest fish species on the planet. It swam in the oceans when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. One reason people are being hurt so severely is that these ancient fish have their bones on the outside, there are no scales. When I was watching the news I saw someone tap on the fish, it was hard like a turtle shell or soemthing. The article states that it sounds like steel plate, like the fish has it's own armor or something. Which is one of the reason's they've been around for so long, say's Chapman, who has been studing sturgen his whole life. He also thinks that the fish jump because they can. lol, simple enough. There have been plenty of other "theories" like the fish jump to clense their gills of parasites, or it's a type of reproduction dance and other hypothesis that are stated in the article.
Now there are people out there who think that we should take some kind of measure to clear out some of the fish, so that there won't be so many accidents and boat damage. Pfft, In my oppinon, that is the silliest thing ever, but there are people out there who supprot this, in spite of the fact that the sturgen are a declining species I'm not sure if they are endangered yet, but how selfish of us to think that this world is made for us. These fish are facinating creatures and have always been in the waters, it so seems that recently there have been more and more of this fish in this particular river which is now causing a problem and our solution is to kill em off.
That seems to be our solution for any animal problem we face.
What are your thoughts on this article? Had you ever heard of this fish before? Do you think we should just kill off these fish, I mean they are harmful? What are your thoughts?

Just remember, If the world didn't suck...
Well first I actually saw that on the news too! I heard one jumped up and knocked a person unconsionous. (If you didn't talk about that one yet. I forgot. xp ) As for should we kill them or relocate them, I would say relocate because of for one, They would be a big finance to kill them because of there shell and its not like they were doing it on purpose. I would just say relocate them somewhere in the ocean where the weather conditions are simmiliar to where they live now.
We would all fall off!!

But Seriously, as to why they jump, perhaps a Defensive measure?Something like a boat would make you feel threatened as a fish too I would think.

I agree with Catz- It is egotistical selfishness to treat the planet like it was made just for us! To kill an animal that is just being itself in its own place is lunacy. Didn't we learn anything in the last couple hundred years? I also agree with Kitten- why are they all female victims, and what were they doing when it happened? Were they on shore? or were they encroaching on the Sturgeons' territory? Since when are people surprised that fish jump? Lots of fish jump! Lots of fish-like mammals in the sea jump too...How many people would complain if it was a cute dolphin that hit them?

I mean Shark are an endangred species. There are over 13 species of shark that are going extinct. Shark Thread and no one is jumping on a band wagon to save them like people are doing for the Polar Bears or the cute Panda's (which by the way, can also kill you).
I think the people that have been hit by the fish are in either boats and the fish jump in and cracks your bones. XP or have been water sking or riding those water jet things.

lol Woahh! Thanks for that scary dino-fish info catz!
People are just afraid of thigns they can't understand, and killing them off or wiping something out of existance seems to be the answer to anything that we don't understand.
@sun_charm--> I don't think they need to be relocated at all, people just need to back off. There are plenty of other lakes and oceans, whatever to go and do your thing. These are fish in their natural habitat, and if they are hurting people then people need to get a clue and back the F**k off. OR start wearing full body protectant suits... haha
@dizzyk--> I think people don't pay attention to the simple things abillities of other species until it is affecting us. "duh...why'd the fish do that." X.X

I too think that people should do nothing. News always makes a big deal of things that hardly ever happen. A fish breaking your bones is bad, but I never heard it before, probably because it almost never does. I'll bet there is more chance of being struck by lightning than by a jumping fish. People just need to learn we can't control the world or prevent every possible bad thing that could happen.
