Alvirad

“I saw Alvirad in a dream, and I knew that I would die there. That vast continent seemed to me a living thing: a great golden lion, or a crested serpent coiled upon a rock, beautiful and deadly.”

Welcome to Alvirad, a medieval fantasy/war RP set on the continent of the same name. On the continent of Alvirad—a vast mass of land taking up most of Aundair’s western hemisphere—the humans of the four Kingdoms of Alvirad, once allied by treaty and tradition, now are vying for power and dominance of the continent. Alvirad is a land where even the forces of Heaven and Hell vie for supremacy. Now, as dark forces grow over Alvirad, war seems imminent between the four kingdoms. Can it be stopped, or will Alvirad soon be engulfed in the tides of war?

RULES (Rewritten by Mr. Blackbird Lore)

1. Mr. Blackbird Lore and Pink Bagel Lord are the GMs/Lords/Masters/Commanders/Gods of the RP. What they say goes. Seriously. They're not strict or difficult people to work, just don't push the matter.

2. Follow the Gaia ToS and the rules set down by the guild.

3. No godmodding.

4. No chatspeak. Let’s all stick with proper English, please. Try to avoid typos.

5. OOC statements should be made in the appropriate thread. If you feel them absolutely necessary, they should be ((OOC: format)).

6. No one-sentence posts. This one’s important. If I see them, they will be deleted. Repeatedly, and without mercy. I’ve done all the work to set this up as an advanced RP, so let’s act like we’re one, all right?

This is supposed to be advanced. We're expecting at least one paragraph per post. That's at least seven sentences. If you're having trouble stretching it, we can recommend three things: DOTS (Do, Observe, Think, Say), practice, or call it quits.

7. Violence, swearing, and romance should all abide by the ToS/Guild rules. That's all there is to it.

8. Note that the word ‘human’ was used when describing the people of Alvirad. Before you dare start typing ‘vampire’ or ‘werewolf’ as your race, PM either Mr. Blackbird Lore of Pink Bagel Lord (Subject: “Hungry For Your Blood”) and provide proof that you can do it well (RP Sample) and that you can justify your existence in Alvirad in an intelligent and articulate manner (make sure to fit it within the setting). Even if you do all of this, WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE THE FINAL DECISION.

9. All profiles must be PMed to Mr. Blackbird Lore or Pink Bagel Lord with the following subject: Alvirad—[Character Name], [Character Class]. Any messages which lack this designation will be deleted without even being read.

10. If you have any questions/comments/criticisms about the previous nine rules, I encourage you to read rule #1 once more before you PM us.

ALVIRAD LANDMARKS/POINTS OF INTEREST

Regalport—The largest port in the country of Lhazaar, Regalport is the headquarters of the Merchant Marine and home to numerous fleets, bars and general entertainment. Possessing a large underground entertainment and gambling district, Regalport attracts people from all over Alvirad. Pirates and the Thieves Guild maintain a heavy presence in the city, and as a result there is a lot of crime.

The Citadel—The great officers academy of Galifar, the Citadel is a military stronghold where the warrior code is law. A fine old complex with a great deal of history to it, the Citadel attracts numerous military leaders each year. Held annually at The Citadel is the Challenge of Kell, an international event which pits the finest warriors from each nation against each other in a contest of wits and strength.

Soulkeep—The religious center of The Holy Empire, Soulkeep sees numerous travelers each year, headed toward the grand Cathedral of Glass, the grandest and most prestigious church in the Empire, and the location of the Speaker of Solem. All members of the Order of the Twin Blades have their initiation ceremony there, during which they are branded with the symbol of Solem.

The Dark Spire—The headquarters of the Archsages of Vidal, the Spire is where all of the research for the advancement of Black Magick takes place. From this place, all dark mages of Vidal receive their orders from the Regent Protector, the Lady Alexandra Nightson. And here, some of the foulest experiments known to mankind are conducted in hopes of purifying the mage bloodlines.

The Golden Court of Sacea—The former capital of Aidenn Kell’s kingdom, the Golden Court is still the lynchpin of peace in Alvirad. Kept guarded by a special detachment of Vidalans, Galifarans, Lhazaarians, and citizens of the Empire, the Golden Court is where the four nations meet every three years to renew and amend the Treaty of Kell. The destruction of this building could easily send the four nations to war once more.

THE NOBLE HOUSES OF ALVIRAD

House Cannith
The main noble house of Lhazaar, House Cannith has been in existence since the time of the Alliance, and kept their status after allying themselves with Aidenn Kell in the days of old. The Cannith family is famous for producing top-notch naval officers and grand fleets—many of the great fleets of Lhazaar are, in some way, owned by the Cannith family. On the darker side, the Cannith families have produced several pirates, all of whom were swiftly disowned, lest they threaten the family’s social status. All members have the symbol of the House—a silver sea serpent—emblazoned on their body someplace (not the same spot for everybody). Recently, much to everyone’s worry, the Cannith have departed from their usual course of marrying Galifaran nobility to marrying into the clergy of the Empire—a definite symptom, indeed, of political trouble.

House Deneith
House Deneith knows no borders. Its kin come from all nations, and they hold minor influence in all regions of the world. A House of thieves, assassins and pirates, it is not uncommon for different branches of the family to go into long periods of feuding, during which countless relatives may be killed. In some ways, House Deneith holds dominion over every thieves guild on the face of Alvirad. The symbol of House Deneith is a hydra, and all members have the mark of Deneith somewhere on their bodies.

House Vadalis
The noble family of the country of Galifar, House Vadalis is the largest and oldest military family in Alvirad. They have produced countless officers and knights, generals and master swordsmen. The Vadalis family is a long and noble line, and has been loyal to Leander Kell since it’s founding as a noble house. The Vadalis have a long standing connection with House Nightson, the Vidalan house of nobility, and many of the branches have intermarried, creating a close tie between the two nations. The symbol of House Vadalis is a golden griffon, and all members have the mark somewhere on their bodies.

House Nightson
House Nightson is the oldest house in Alvirad, descended from Lord Gwydion Nightson, the mage who fought beside King Aidenn in his efforts to unify Alvirad. The current matriarch of House Nightson is Alexandra Nightson, the Regent Protector of Vidal. House Nightson has, since the beginning, produced countless powerful mages, many of whom serve on the Black Guard, the personal security force of the Vidalan Regent. The Vidalan nobility is much to their chagrin, subject to the same laws of Soldier and Citizen—though many of the restrictions (especially those involving the birthing centers) have been relaxed (the minimum number and the age bracket remains in place, however). Many factions within House Nightson are displeased with the Regent’s decisions, and seek to overthrow her as ruler and to instate a new Nightson ruler in her place. The members of House Nightson all bear a great black wyvern as a symbol.

House Corvair
The most holy and the most zealous, House Corvair is the highest ranking noble house of the Holy Empire of the Light. Having produced countless clerics and the current Speaker of Solem, House Corvair is the most honored of all the families in the Empire. Zealous in their hatred of the Black Magick, the Corvairs have begun to intermarry with the Cannith rather than the Vadalis, as the Vadalis support the Nightsons and the Black Mages. The symbol of the Corvair is a great white wyvern.

The Divine Pantheon

These are the Gods and Goddesses of Aundair that denizens of Alvirad's four provinces dutifully worship. While more Gods and Goddesses do exist, these are the only ones whom are worshiped for the sake of gain in the matters of politics and war. The [W], , and [E] signify the stance of the clerics: White, Black, and Either.

-Valen, the God of Valor and Strength-at-Arms [E]
-Gairn, the God of Travel [E]
-Aquain, Goddess of the Sea and Seafarers [W]
- Deccan, God of Magic [E]
-Rennais, Goddess of Death and Secrets

Should you desire to add another God/Goddess, please contact Mr. Blackbird Lore.

Should multiple Gods/Goddesses be added, a new list will be created with all of them.

MAGICK

Magick in the world of Alvirad is divided into two portions, White and Black. Below is a brief explanation of each, and the rules regarding each.

White Magick
The white places heavy emphasis on healing and divination, and on some elements of conjuration. However, the overall effect is using Magick as a means, not as an ends. For example, the White Magick may aid you defensively and augment your abilities, but it won’t kill the bandits for you. White Magick includes:
-Conjuration of Shields
-Healing Magick
-Temporarily Enhanced Ability/Weaponry
-Divination
-Various Illusions
-Influence Others

RESTRICTIONS ON WHITE MAGICK:

1. White Magick cannot be used to directly kill anyone/thing
2. All TRAINED White Mages come only from the Holy Empire OR Lhazaar. There is no possible was for mages to come from Galifar (they import their mages) or Vidal (black mages only).

Black Magick
Unlike White Magick, Black Magick is used to injure, rather than to bolster one’s defenses or shield oneself or others. Black Magick provides command of destructive forces, rather than the subtle influences on the natural world. The Black Magick can be used to outwardly kill your foes, while the White will not allow it. Black Magick includes:

-Spells which cause pain/insanity/blindness/deafness/death
-Spells which cause destruction
-Spells which heal you at the cost of another
-Necromancy
-Illusions
-Command Other

RESTRICTIONS ON BLACK MAGICK:
1. Black Magick cannot be used in conjunction with White.
2. All Black Mages come from Vidal—read information pertaining to Vidal.

The classes listed below are the options for your character. Follow all of the designations below when deciding on a class for your character. If you have a class you wish to create as a unique class, PM me with the subject “Class—Insert Class Name Here”.

Fighter- A basic melee combatant, often without formal training. Usually bandits fall into this category, as well as basic infantry in most armies. Proficient with swords, axes, maces, and small arms.

Swordsman- A melee combatant that has been formally trained and is highly proficient in the use of swords and the killing arts. Often were once members of one of the great armies or a mercenary group. Proficient only with swords.

Axeman-A melee combatant that has been trained in the use of axes. Though few of the armies offer thorough training with axes, one could acquire a reasonable degree of skill working with a mercenary group or a bandit group. Proficient only with axes.

Cavalier- A mounted combatant trained in one of the formal academies. Trained in the use of lances and swords and mounted combat, the cavalier is a skilled warrior indeed. Proficient with swords and lances.

Knight- The commander of the legions of troops, the mounted defender, the knight is the epitome of law and order, trained in the use of axes, swords, and lances. Able to use all three weapon types while mounted, the knight is a formidable foe indeed.

Assassin- The silent killer, the poisoner of the evening meal, the Assassin is a skilled killer trained to deal death from the shadows. Trained in the use of swords and small arms, the Assassin may come from a number of places—a local thieves guild, House Deneith, or perhaps the fabled Order of the Shadows.

Sniper- One of the skilled archers of the great armies, snipers are usually highly-trained warriors proficient with bows and crossbows.

Clerics- Holy warriors and priests, Clerics gain their divine magic from their deities, and are usually well-trained in their arts, though some come by their abilities without much training at all. Proficient with swords, axes, small arms, and maces.

Black Mage- A practitioner of the Black Magick, always formally trained in their arts. Always from Vidal.

Pirate- A member of one of the pirate crews on the Great Ocean, pirates are sea-faring warriors with little to no formal training. Proficient in either swords or axes.

Duelist- A swordsman who focuses more on agility and skill than brute strength or force, a duelist is first and foremost a showman. Often the favorites of royal courts, duelists are proficient in swords and small arms.

STORY UPDATES

The four nations of Alvirad have been at an unasy peace for years--a peace that threatens to topple now, as the nations of Lhazaar and The Holy Empire move into a close alliance. Though the Empire preaches the teachings of the Light, they are persecuting Black Mages by the hundreds, and, feeling threatened, the dark nation of Vidal has begun to build up its army for war. Meanwhile, as the king of Galifar sickens and his son prepares to ascend the throne, questions of his parentage arise, threatening to send the country spiraling into civil war...
