I always want to play bardic characters in my campaigns. (unfortunately, I don't very often get to play in campaigns, so I have yet to actually play a bard)

Recently, some unholy annoying person pointed out to me that "bards r weeeeeeeeeek" and despite my annoyance, despite his bad spelling and grammar, despite my trying to deny it, I think he might have been right. Does anyone else think bards are an underbalanced class?

I find bards to be strong in less combat oriented groups, as they do have a way with people, what with all the enchantments and such.
But in a dungeon, I think they might be a bit weak in the combat area.
First: They don't seem to capable of fighting, unless you lose the spell casting. And then he just boils down to a rogue without the sneakiness.

Second: He sings at the monsters! weak, huh?

Despite that, they may be better as support characters. Using bardic song and the Inspire Courage stuff to buff the fighters and help the mages dodge. (heh... "Dodge, dodge, dodge the flaming sword")

So they aren't weak, you just have to know how to play 'em.

I asked TSR and she said -
"Bards are freakishly overpowered. You want to play a bard, I'm gonna go hide until all the peoples are dead 'cause you're scary when you get mad. Try the complete scoundrel for prestige classes. Master of Masks... shudder..."

I disagree on this... Bard, the class itself isn't overpowered... perhaps the prestige classes are, I've never looked at them, but a simple bard char isn't overpowered in my opinion. they usually act as a support char in combat, and tend to be a "people person" outside of combat. However, now that i've heard about someone thinking they're "freakishly overpowered" I may have to look into the prestige classes for the bard, cause that's the first time i've heard that point of view, and I'm a bit surprised by it...

bard class isnt overpowered (especailly if you play it with odd multiclassing)
(my barbarian murdered the bard, the bard was trying to go diplomatic with him, and so there went one person in the campaign on our team)

bards like all classes have their ups and downs...and downs...
i dont like playing as bards, personally i always go wizard/fighter together or battle-sorcerer, or something of the sorts

like all hybrid classes, bards don't fare as well as others in some areas. however, I once had a bard who demolished a bunch of enemies with a well placed confusion spell, so....................
I do believe ninjas are freakishly overpowered though. They can sudden strike anytime, with their leaping abilities

I love playing bards. Dunno why, but I do. They're my favorite class.

Jack of all trades but masters of none. Their whole purpose is simply to fill in as needed. They can fight (though not as well as any fighter granted) but when an extra sword is needed, it helps. They can eavesdrop and help when the thief is busy picking a lock. They can cast spells (although I'm not too fond of the new rules on the types they can use. I miss my magic missiles spell.) They tend to know all that useful lore that tends to come in handy when you want to know about a certain local artifact. And when needed, they can be a people person to smooth over the fact that one of the adventuring party might have accidently started up the 100 year war between towns all over again.

What I want to know more about is this prestige class you're all talking about. A powerful bard? Can there truly be such a thing?

ninja overpowered? you really think so? nah, cant be.

honestly i can think of an overpowered class. unless you say all magical classes, especially the wizard. if you think about it, wizards can do anything, from copying feats with a simple spell, or instantly gaining proficiency with a weapon for a couple of hours, they can change your age, create a magical barbaric rage, change shape, or even call a demon from the underworld!
Or the cleric with their powerful domains, the healing domain allows the cleric to cast a healing spell of a higher level. Thats a cool thing to have.(and there is a wizard spell that allows you to have a domain for a little while) I forgot what the other domains do, but they are all good.

sure fighters get to where they can attack almost an infinite ammount of times and are so damn hard to hit without a perfect 20. sure barbarians are so hulkishly strong you cant get near them. But wizards dont need physical strength to be focused on, when the can just cast a spell and be just the same.

A high leveled wizard is the closest thing to being a diety.

Ninjas can basically sneak attack whenever they want, via hyperjump abilities. But, bard, druid, and cleric are some of the scariest classes I've had to dm. "you're a dire what!?!"

Bards are one of my favorite classes, along with fighters and rogues.. like I think one or two of the people above me have said, they have their ups and downs like any class. Bards are for people who want to cast a few spell, but don't want to pick their spells in advance, plus they can also take up some rogue-ish skills and talk their way in and out of a bunch of things, through song or otherwise. Another thing, you can earn money in bars and inns that you stay in by playing music, with the owner's permission first of course. The down sides are that when it comes to brute stregth, bards are fairly weak; they don't have as many spells as sorcerer and wizard classes do [but they dont have to study or choose ahead of time]; and Rogues are much better at the rogue skills, lol. But like I said before, every class has ups and downs...
