I was reading something about modesty yesterday and it was saying that modesty isn't only covering yourself up... It's also looking nice and wearing nice clothes, instead of torn up and trashy clothes. It also said that exentuating (sp) different parts of your body is immodest, even if it's covered. What're your thoughts?

Of coarse, modesty doesn't just mean "covered up" that's why they say in For Strength of Youth to avoid extremes and that young women should wear one pair of modest earings.

For example you go to some party and there's some girl decked out in a flashy dress that stands out and she's got the giant hoop earings that hang down to her elbows and th works. She's not showing anything but you can't help but stare at her outlandish appearance. Would you consider that modest? A good synonym for modest could be humble.

Yup, modesty is good for sure, and I agree 'n all that. But what do you mean by "exentuating"?

It's denotation is like that of decorating, but it's connotation is more like that of enhancing.
For example tattoos, multiple piercings on the ears, piercings elsewhere and the like.

I think I may have failed on the "looking nice" part. At least some would think so. I dress like a boy. XD For a while I had to buy boy shorts because all the stores here had inmoddest shorts for girls. Then to top things off, I like regular t-shirts. Like my green 1-up super mario brothers shirt. razz But its not like I wear clothes with holes in them.
But yeah there is more to being modest than just covering up. There's a huge problem with tight clothing, at least me thinks so. It's pretty sad. Soon I'm expecting the strength of youth to change once again and address just what is consider tight clothing. I also expect them to address the very baggy pants. I'm kinda sick and tired of seeing underwear lines on girls and what boxes boys wear. Make me go blind soon. gonk

I think it's really obnoxious and ridiculous when boys where their pants so far down on their hips. Like these wise young ladies said, we don't need to see their boxers or titey whiteys. It's unfortunate that so many girls wear skimpy clothes that don't leave much to the imagination. I don't know why their parents let them wear that stuff. I find girls much more attractive who dress sharp (it doesn't have to be trendy or expensive) than girls who dress skanky.

Way to go for the right girl, Snaksie. (I hope to be that girl too. Just btw.)
I agree, but I don't understand what you mean when you said "It's unfortunate that so many girls wear skimpy clothes that don't leave much to the imagination." Explain, please?

Thanks Babs. I'm sure you are one of those girls that sets the right example. wink
What I meant by not leaving much to the imagination is that some girls dress so immodestly that they are practically not wearing anything at all. One of the purposes of clothes is to cover ourselves and not be immodest, yet some clothes hardly accomplish that. I am amazed at some of the outfits that girls wear because they either do little more than draw attention to a girls figure or they do less than just wearing underwear. burning_eyes To me, that is not very attractive and I certainly don't think it is modest. I don't think we need to go back to the days of being covered from our wrists to our ankles, but we should at least dress with a little class.

Ahh, I understand.
To me, it's not attractive at all. Of course we don't need to go back to the covered wagon days (Haha! It's pioneer day too!). Anyone can look amazing if they're covered up. The media today is horrible when it comes to that. They think you can only be attractive if you're exposing yourself to the world. burning_eyes I really am not impressed by any girls who do that.

Yee old definitions

modesty 1531, "freedom from exaggeration, self-control," from M.Fr. modestie, from L. modestia "moderation," from modestus "moderate, keeping measure, sober," from modus "measure, manner" (see mode (1)). Meaning "having a moderate opinion of oneself" is from 1553. Modest (adj.) is first recorded 1565.
mod·es·ty (mŏd'ĭ-stē) Pronunciation Key n.
1. The state or quality of being modest. 2. Reserve or propriety in speech, dress, or behavior. 3. Lack of pretentiousness; simplicity.
I think it is quite clear that even covering yourself up.. in a trashy, or demonstrative manner (Goth, grunge) Would be considered immodest.
Our leaders have the gift of tongues. When they chose their words it is with careful consideration.
So we should carefully consider what modesty means. And carefully consider everything that the prophet says with the spirit as our guide, and not jump to whatever conclusion is most convenient.
This is a good Forum topic smile

Excellent, I'm not the only one with this opinion! It disgusts me, the high schools, because of the high percentage of immodestly dressed teenagers running around campus. And it's the adults too! I nearly do this when I see one of those people: burning_eyes Well, nearly. mrgreen
Someone asked me once if I thought they looked alright, and of course, I told her that the shirt came down too low and the skirt was a little too high. I don't know why, but she smiled at me and told the that I was going to make a good mom. mrgreen We'll see. In my family, my mom has a different set of standards then my dad and I do, so when I see my little sister running around in miniskirts (and she's 5) I'm not afriad to tell the world that it's too short. People get sick of me at times, actually. mrgreen
But that's what the world says. rolleyes It doesn't matter what the world thinks of you, it's what The Almighty thinks, right?
