Some people might have come with prior experience with Dungeons and Dragons, but for other people our d20 system which D&D is based on is frankly a headache. This introduction guide will hopefully help you come to terms with it.
Our Game system is based on three things. They are the supports and base of the whole structure if you will.
1. Dice Check/Difficulty Class (abbrievated DC)
The DC is the number you need to beat to be successful in your action. For example, say you were trying to swim across a channel against the current in a storm. You would need to beat a certain number, which would be quite high in that situation, with your roll.
2. The 20-sided dice
The short form for this is 'd20'. D for the dice, and 20 for the amount of sides. We roll these die whenever we need to beat the DCs explained above and add different bonuses depending on the situation. For example, in the above swimming adventure we would add our Strength modifier, explained below, as you obviously need strength to power your way through the water. To roll a d20 you go to Post Action > Roll Dice > 20-sided dice, and choose how many you want to roll.
3. Modifiers (abbreviated mods)
Modifiers are derived from your abilities (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence). When rolling to meet a check for a specific action, you would add either the number you have in that skill, or add the appropriate ability modifier. The formula to determine your stat's modifier is as follows:
[stat - 10] / 2, rounding DOWN.
In our game system, we usually always round to the side that gives you the least advantage. Thusly, the DCs would be rounded up, and any bonuses would be rounded down.
Let's say that my Intelligence is 7. My modifier would be as follows:
7 - 10 = -3
-3 / 2 = -1.5 rounded down = -2
