Okay, so I do hope that it's not against the rules for me to make this thread. It's a simple question...

What is up with giving gold for beta-ing?

I'm fairly new to these forums, but I've been around other places and have never heard of such a practice (well, duh, Eyetk! Other places don't have gold to give!). So I was wondering if someone could explain how common this is, what the usual rates are, etc.

...it does seem a somewhat strange practice to me, I must admit.

I really don't get it. That's why in my thread, I say donations are accepted, but not required. I even list gratitude as fair trade.

No, this question is not against any rules (as far as I'm aware).

I suppose some people think it's a service and, just like you tip a waiter, you're expected to give them something for their troubles.
But just like tipping, some places require it, some places it's optional.

Like here, we're pretty much all for free beta-ing. You should be able to develop a relationship with your beta, not just hire them out by the hour.

How common is it? Well, there are a few places in the Services forum in the Mini-shops. Hell, I once advertised for a place which offered it as a service. Sometimes you may find a person offering in the main Writers forum or occassionally in one of the subforums.
Honestly though, I've rarely seen a place more than a couple of times when I've ducked into the Services subforum to keep check on my shop. Never seen the same person keeping their offer up in any of the other places. The people who offer to do it free of charge seem to drown out most of them.

As to regular prices? Well it's usually anywhere from 150g to 500g for a page and most places will stop at about 10 pages.
However, as I've said, there are plenty of people who are willing to do it for free, especially if you ask in the right way. (Usually people find them by going: I'm also looking for a friendly beta, whom I hope to develop my skills over a long time with. Or by people offering.)

Some people are even opposed to charging gold for something like beta-ing.

As to me, it seems silly to pay someone everytime you want to beta something.

Oh, wow. Woah, that's expensive.

I mean, I thought maybe if it was a small bit, it would just be a custom way to say 'thanks', but that's...owww, I'd never be able to afford even a tenth of that, and it's not like I've been spending money anywhere.

This practice sounds more and more business-like, and that makes me sad sad

It's only business like if you have to go SEARCHING for a beta. Then all those shops do look intimidating.

And I suppose it's more for places which need a plot to be checked over or something. They'll have the gold sooner or later, even if it's only an RP.
I've never seen a person who write for fun seriously consider using any of those services.

Be glad there are places like here which we don't charge at all and are pretty much adamant over things like that.

May I ask why you were asking? Do you need a beta urgent or something?

Well, yes, I have been looking for a beta (FF7 fandom, if anyone interested is reading this biggrin But it's not real urgent). I've sent out a few PMs after looking at the beta list, but I've gotten no reply...then I saw a thread in one of the main writing subforums which mentioned gold for beta'ing, and I wondered if I was committing some sort of faux pas by not offering to pay.

In the original thread, we said that if people wanted to give gifts to their beta/gamma, it was okay, but nowhere near a requirement.

I think it's just some people are dead and not online or on everyday.

(Psst. Try Chibi. He might be able to help)

I know a lot about FF VII but my beta skills are sub-par.

It ain't CloudxTifa. I'm...pairing opposed, in general; the fact that the majority of fanfic in my fandoms (which aren't heavy romance in canon) is pairing-centered makes me twitch. I might have minor romance in a fic--if only because I think I should practice writing realistic emotion--but it'll always be a side note and skip-able.

I suppose I could ask both of you. One for beta, and one for practice? Yesno? biggrin

Wait, wait, I just got a response from someone I'd messaged earlier. Let's see how this goes!

I think there are some pairings I don't like, becaues they're pretty much shoved down my throat by rabid fans. Then there's the fact that I might not like the girl or guy in question. Even with them, many writers tend to turn the characters into Stus/Sues.

=3 That's good.

When one goes to get something professionally edited, it costs money, and a LOT of money. That might be why people charge gold for beta-ing in Gaia.

...although gold is really worthless?

Anyway, I think the fanfiction community thrives off of sharing, so you'll probably be able to find people who will beta for free just because they like doing it. smile It's good writing practice for the beta-er too!

Yeah, but when you get something professionally edited, it's...well, professionally edited. Betas ain't professional...

I think I've managed to find someone. I've got my fingers crossed that they won't abandon me...

*crosses fingers too* Of course, betas could be editors in training. XD They could be honing their skills. Then again, they could be writers, doing the same thing too except working more with the mechanics and what not.

I hope I made sense.

Hey, editors can be writers too! Sometimes, even agents are writers! XD
