The black-teal colt nosed his way down a stream. Most others his age probably had to sneak out and about in order to do what they wanted but not him. His parents knew that he’d come home and probably hadn’t noticed yet that he was gone. Not that they weren’t loving.. They both simply believed in being independent and didn’t try to keep him caged in one field. Since a week or so after hatching from his basket, Faolen had taken to wandering. He’d go uphills and downhills, through water and back again just to see what there was. Nobody else seemed to live remotely close so the young boy didn’t worry too much over meeting people be they good or bad.
Sighing deeply, the colt put his neck down and sniffed at the edge of the water.
Something was different today!
Usually when he sniffed about the same scents would enter his nose. Rabbits, foxes, birds, and the like came to this stream and left their vague scents behind but today something bigger was here. Okay, so maybe not so much bigger but definitely different than what he was used to! Was it another Soquili or some strange breed of animal he’d never encountered. He’d been taught all sorts of things about animals so how could something he didn’t know be here?
“Och! S’anybody out there?” Well.. This was weird…

Today, she had managed to get permission to wander around--not too far, but far enough that she wasn't in the same presence as her father--and play by herself for a while. She wasn't really allowed to play with her sister because her mother worried her sister's fangs and horns would hurt her if they played. That only made her wish she didn't look too much like her mother, with the feathery wings and all, but all in all, she didn't really complain, so long as she could fly in the skies with her family.
The smell of liquid hitting her nose, Blackfire decided to play out another adventure near water again. Water being where she decided she'd meet other foals her age (after all, that's how she'd met Meshach... the thought of that colt made her wanna tear at something) and well, she didn't deny wanting to meet other Soquili. Her father might have liked being secluded, but she was sure he'd met quite a few in his day.
Today would be unusual for Blackfire, as she would find she would meet one of the strangest Soquilis (which would soon be her opinion) she would, well, ever meet. Stumbling clumsily downhill, she managed to maintain balance as she finally got to the edge of the water, not too far away from the colt that just downstream. Soon, Blackfire heard the oddest of words... with a weird sound, but it was certainly someone speaking. Ears perking up, she looked around, and then made her way downstream.
"Hello?" she called, wondering if the weird words would answer her back.

Faolen stared at his reflection in the water and lost his focus on whatever was supposed to be talking to him. He knew that whatever was out there would get to him soon enough and his reflection had caught his eyes for now. Black with not a single marking except for strange wispy “Celtic” markings around his hooves. His dad had explained that they were something that came from his home and he should be proud to be able to carry them. Whatever that meant… Oh right.. He was supposed to be talking to someone.
His teal eyes lifted and began to scan around. Someone was definitely coming closer because the scent was growing more and more. Definitely reminded him of his brother. Not that it was Finn, just that it wasn’t as perhaps.. Big? As his mother and father’s scent seemed to be. Both of them could be kind of overwhelming in a very comforting way.
Finally, his eyes found what he was looking for. It was a girl, ew, and had pretty wings with red and blue on them. Wait.. Wings? Was she one of those things that his mam an dah had told him to keep his eyes out for. No, she didn’t have leather-looking wings or fangs. Still… Could she actually fly? He couldn’t, but he could run really fast and that was definitely cool. Shaking his head again Faolen turned and began to walk with ears pricked towards the girl. Hopefully she was friendly and hopefully he wouldn’t get cooties.
“Aye?” What else could he say… He wasn’t too sure yet… Darn it, he hadn’t learned social manners yet…

"Aye?" Blackfire blinked when she looked up, seeing another colt--black and teal--looking at her. He spoke funny, but Blackfire decided that since he wasn't laughing at her or being mean in any way--yet?--she decided she could be nice. After all, he wasn't bothering her or making fun of her. Swishing her tail as she kept her distance of about five feet, she nodded. "Hello... so are you the one making the funny sounds?" she queried, before looking him over.
He had nice fur color, but she decided that she liked the way she looked much better. The only thing she wished she had was her father's strong wings, but that was all right, so long as she could fly, she was happy. Well, sort of. Blue eyes scrutinized this new foal, and well, she decided he didn't smell as funny as the other one she had met earlier that day. Still, though, he did smell... funny. But in a good. Maybe. Seeing as he had addressed her presence first, Blackfire managed to make herself look not so clumsy as she introduced herself. "I'm Blackfire. A pleasure to meet you...?"
However, her mind was being distracted by her stomach, which was telling her she needed to eat. She hadn't eaten in a while, since it her father hadn't gone hunting in two or three hours, and the last thing she had eaten was a squirrel... but since she had more of her mother's appetite than her father's, she preferred berries of any sort, and of course, apples. Apples were a specialty food for her father, who ate them on occasion when he felt the hunger pains of wanting raw flesh... forgetting she had company temporarily, she began to pick her into the water, thinking she'd find something to eat on the other bank.

Figures.. The first person he ever meets besides his mam, dah, and brother is a girl. One that didn’t seem all that inclined to pay attention to anything either. Shrugghing slightly he just blinked for a moment. Funny noises? What on earth was she talking about? Was there someone else out and about today and that someone ought to be worried about? His face furrowed a bit and it took him a moment to figure out what she might be talking about.
“I canna say that I know what yer talkin’ about wit yer “funny noises” unless yer meanin’ me voice.” Well.. That would be rather rude of her. He had only heard the way his father spoke and of course some of his mam.. So should he not talk that way? Bah. Questions could prove to be rather irritating to him some days. One young brow arched as he stood and let her check him over. It was only fair, since he had done the exact same thing to her upon sight.. At least then they hadn’t been talking. “Ye kin call me Faolen. Tis fine indeed ter make yer acquaintance.” Niceties were done now, no?
Faolen watched in curiosity as the little filly began to wander away from him and look around the bank. Was she sniffing out someone the way he had scented to try to figure out just who precisely had been there. Not that he’d been able to know it was a winged filly. With typical childish impatience, he decided not to try to ask what she was doing but find something fun to occupy his time. An apple tree that stood not too far from the water caught his eye and he pranced over to it. Rearing up and balancing trying to n** at lower branches. Not that he was overly hungry, just that his balance certainly needed some work.

It occurred to Blackfire she was being rude by not giving her attention to the new company in her presence, but she was so hungry, and her stomach growled, indicating it even more. Glad that her black fur hid her bright red blush of embarrassment, she pricked her ears towards Faolen's voice patterns, still finding them an odd way to speak. (It never occurred to Blackfire her father also had a heavy accent and that she spoke that accent... just she never used Old English words.)
"Yeah, that's what I mean," she agreed, after hearing him speak again. "It's... cool," she tried to describe, not exactly sure if that was the right word to use. She thought the way he spoke was interesting, if weird, and funny. Not in a ha-ha-in-your-face funny, but more a that's-interesting funny. She didn't think too much on the topic, nor did she pay any heed to how Faolen appeared to be getting annoyed (she did noticed that he always seemed to think a lot). Once the introductions had gone past (she also realized she was thinking in circles), when her stomach growled again, telling her she needed something to eat. Now. Direly, in fact, or she would have to come home and tell Mommy and Daddy she needed their help. For food.
When Foalen suddenly wandered away, she looked up to find him trying to get some apples. Surprised she hadn't noticed the tree before, Blackfire wandered that way as well. Her wings only allowed her to stay afloat for a small amount of time--and she couldn't even go very high, either--but it was enough for her to take a running jump and grab a nice, juicy red apple from a low branch. Humming her pleasure, she began to eat it with vigorous speed. Forgetting her manners, she didn't offer Faolen any help in getting any if he wanted some... her stomach just kept growling and growling, so she needed to feed it. Hunger was something she didn't like, after all.

He just waited for a moment or four while the filly gathered her thoughts or food or well whatever it is she was after. His presence couldn’t be so bad that after just a few minutes of conversation she was finding a way to pack it up and go home. His ears pricked forward in curiosity when her stomach growled and he smiled kindly, perhaps he’d get an apple for her too? The filly also intrigued him in the sense that she didn’t speak “normally.” The word “normal” sucked.
Cool? The word had it’s purpose but usually he used it just for the temperature. When he got home he was totally going to try using that on his brother. Finn would be green with jealousy. … Wait.. Finn was already green all the time. His mind had wandered far enough that his balance slipped and he went down onto four legs again. Well, that wouldn’t do a’tall. Even if girls were useless carriers of cooties he couldn’t be less able than one of them and she was hungry enough that maybe he ought to help her. (Of course, this was all before the little winged filly simply helped herself to an apple.) Stretching up once again, Faolen almost fell when she came charging at the tree and it seemed like, at him. Going down onto four legs he waited for her to have her treat. Oi girls.
Third try HAD to be the charm, good luck/omen, happy times. Pinning both ears as-if angry he charged forward a few feet and made a leap. Luckily his bared teeth managed to clamp around the edge of a branch sending apples flying all over the place. Thunk! He landed and looked around a bit dazed from a stray apple to the head. Well.. It looked like he was going to have enough food to go around. A quick silly grin spread across the boyish face and he winked at Blackfire, “Seems ter me we’ve got more’n enough ter fill up on now, eh?” With careful consideration he leaned down and chose the apple that seemed to be the biggest and prettiest. All that work meant he ought to have a nice apple after all!

Indeed, Blackfire couldn't have been more prouder of herself with that flying leap, not realizing that it could have meant that she might have been attacking Faolen (not that she cared, she preferred that boys stay away from her anyway) and well, she was hungry. Finished with her first apple, she was about to try and get another apple when suddenly, her new--friend? companion? buddy?--did a flying leap (how could he do that without wings!?) and brought down enough apples to feed more than the two of them. Eyes widened in shock in awe for merely a moment before they returned to her "cold, analytical, and emotionless" gaze.
(Technically, Blackfire didn't even know what being "cold, analytical, and emotionless" was, but hey, she could pretend, right?) Munching carefully, she vaguely thought about why boys thought all girls were silly when they were just as bad, if worse. Faolen here wasn't as bad as Meshach had been (man, was he annoying!) so she decided all of them weren't bad, but most of them probably were. The big grown-ups, though, they were probably okay (like her Daddy, of course, and her Mommy) but Windflame had warned her that there were some out there who were extremely vicious. Those who looked like him, who were crueler... devastatingly so.
Shrugging off the thought--she wasn't one to keep her attention on details for long anyway--she returned to watching Faolen, seeing him pick up the biggest, reddest, juiciest apple of the ones he had caused to fall all around them. Shaking her head at his odd, goofy smile--trying contain her own, but a small one spread on her muzzle anyway--she managed to stop herself from laughing as she replied, "I'd say so, Faolen; are you sure you didn't knock down lots of apples because you have more foals to play with later?" After all, Blackfire couldn't stay for very long, no matter how much she wanted to.

Faolen smiled as the apples began to crunch and munch in his mouth. The feeling and taste totally made the apple-to-the-head worth having. His spirits were up and he was perfectly content to just eat and talk to this girl for awhile. Other boys (himself included) didn’t like to talk to or associate with girls because they could have cooties, but she wasn’t too bad was she. The look on her eyes for just a moment before she went back to being a blank-sheet of paper made him grin just a bit. … Too bad he had apple in his mouth and had to close it rather quickly. Talking with his mouth full was probably just as bad as eating with it full.
Faolen didn’t know that his new possible playmate was trying not to smile, simply because he had no idea why someone would do something like that. He’d only met her, Rashkae, and his mother, but these cooties that he and Finn tried so hard to avoid didn’t seem to be crawling on her fur. He was nearly itching to ask her about them and how she had managed to get rid of them, but that would probably be more than just a little bit rude. Blah, he’d find out someday. Azariel didn’t have them because mammas weren’t supposed to.. Rashkae was just Rashkae, and he had no clue on Blackfire. “So what are yer mam an’ dah like?” It was a random question.. But he was curious to know.
He had finished his first apple and had moved on quite easily to his second planning on putting away around four or so before he stopped. Too many had made him sick last time, but four was a nice even number. Maybe five. Okay, so that wasn’t even but it was still a nice number to use. “I didna mean ter get quite as many but me mam, dah, an’ brother can come an’ have a few with me. Along with me mam’s herd.” There. Now he wasn’t being wasteful or anything like that. All the food that had been knocked down would get eaten, “what’s yer hurry ter be home, lass?”

[ This post starts the period of a time-jump as Faolen and Blackfire have now grown and are older. ] It hadn't been too long since the time she had 'played' with Faolen, but all she could remember from that time was when Faolen had knocked down so many apples, one of them falling on his head. Her mouth twitched at the memory, as she recalled how the silly colt had had this odd, goofy grin on his face afterwards. Another thing she remembered was the unusual way Faolen spoke. She held back laughter as she recalled how she had told him--well, rather she asked--that he made 'funny noises'.
Well, that was all right, she guessed. She soon arrived at the place where she had once met Faolen, but under limited and parental permission. Now, much older and much wiser, she could stay out longer; past midnight, even. Thinking she was alone with just her memories and her thoughts, she paused a moment to look into the water that had seemed like a river rather than a simple stream, and stared at her reflection. Hinode had told her she was very beautiful, but Blackfire didn't see it at all. How could she be, with this odd personality of hers? She sighed.
Suddenly, a smile made its way to Blackfire's face, as she suddenly remembered why she didn't particularly like water. She had fallen in once, when she was a filly, and another colt by name of Meshach had heard her... and came to laugh at her. A wry grin was now planted on her face as she realized that, indeed, it truly had been amusing, but back then it hadn't been very funny. Probably why she liked Faolen a little better; he had been much nicer, to a point. All these childhood memories were getting to her now, but she couldn't help it. In a way, she kind of missed her foalhood friends, especially Faolen: he had been interesting to listen to and talk to.

Faolen’s curls bounced around his head with easy acceptance. His brother, Finn, had gotten much longer hair like their mother and he couldn’t say he was jealous in the least. The stallion, just turned one in reality, was wandering towards his favorite childhood. Having spent many days playing and learning about nature around him at the stream near that favored apple tree, his eyes weren’t really on anything in particular. He probably could have made it their blindfolded at midnight on a new moon night!
His parents had long since given up trying to tell him just where precisely he could or couldn’t go due to the fact that he’d done whatever felt like fun.. Always. A mischievous grin spread on his green lips and soon enough he saw the stream’s beginning. Not too much farther and Faolen would find himself at what would probably be his home before too long. As much as he loved being at home it drove him nearly crazy having to have to spend that much time with his family. No, this was a couple miles away from them an easy run or medium length walk. It would do just fine for him and perhaps someday in the late future a mare would roam nearby too with him. The back of his mind still argued that girls had cooties though.
Time passed rather quickly at the meandering steps the muscled stallion took. His mind had floated off to some other place that none other would ever be able to venture and he didn’t realize that there was someone else standing not to far away. Of course, this meant that his brilliant reaction was to stop dead and snort rather loudly. It was a snort of being spooked, not one threatening someone to get away from his land. Shaking his mane quickly, Faolen stepped forward to let some moon shine on him and to get a better view of the other one because of a few offending tree branches. An black mare with reds, whites, and blues twisted into a thick mane stood up ahead. How was she familiar.. It hit him rather quickly, “Blackfire??”

Her ears twitched when she heard a loud snort, momentarily followed by a familiar voice saying her name. She turned around, surprised, and then her own eyes widened. "Faolen?" she exclaimed, though in a way not too surprised. After all, the area around here had Faolen's scent, faded, but she hadn't really recognized it nor paid any attention to it, too occupied with her thoughts.
She smiled. She didn't mind meeting up with old friends; it was meeting strangers that got her to be so irritable. Most of the time, anyway. "How have you been, Faolen?" she asked, beginning to walk toward him but stopped a good two or three feet away.
She knew Faolen didn't like to be too close to females (having learned that he had subtly stayed a certain distance away from her when they were younger) and so respected his privacy. "I didn't think I'd meet you here again," she joked, blue eyes sparkling with amusement. He looked much bigger, obviously, but just as well, they had both been small just a little while ago.
She decided she liked seeing old friend more than she bargained for too, especially since it was nice to see a familiar face rather than a strange one... and she was repeated her thoughts to herself again. Mentally shaking her head, she looked Faolen over. His hair had grown slightly longer, curled, and his tail had grown very long. It was also obvious he hadn't had any contact with any two-legger, otherwise he'd probably have braids like she, her sister, and her father did.
She straightened, and turned to look at the old apple tree, where he had once caused so many apples to fall. They still looked as ripe and delicious as they had back then, seeing as more had grown as the months had passed. She mused a bit, thinking to get one later to eat. Her mood had risen significantly, though, because Faolen was one of the few nicer males she knew.

She remembered him? A small smile spread slowly across the stallions face as his teal eyes looked over the mare that had been the filly he’d had such a fun time with. Of course, an apple to the head wasn’t the best way to spend the day. All well… His mind had lost focus for a moment basking in old memories and all that stuff that he seemed to young to be nostalgic for!
His smile stayed and he moved a bit closer to her. So that the three feet was probably only a foot and a half or maybe two. The urge to nuzzle her in a friendly way was there, but the old Faolen that fussed about cooties was in a chattering mood.
“I’ve been well.. It seems like it’s been years since I’ve seen ye.” Okay, it had probably only been a year maybe a year and a half but that was a long time for him to be off on his own growing and for her to be off on his own. Today certainly seemed to be chance meeting. His tail, long and white with green tails was fanned out ornately and he slashed it back and forth a bit. “Oh? So you were here just hoping away fer me ter show up?”
His own tone was just as teasing and joking as hers. His brother, Finn, rarely went with him to the stream and today obviously he hadn’t come alone. Now Faolen found himself being glad of that. She had grown up to be so lovely. Personally, he found his own looks to be boring but good for a warrior. He didn’t need flashiness to get him through life. His teal eyes lowered to be eye level with hers. Faolen knew full well that she was looking him over the way he had her upon first seeing her. It was part of the head and heart to note changes and all that jazz.
Faolen raised his head up and followed her gaze to the tree. “Ye think I’m big enough ter get one without knockin’ meself silly?” His grin was simple and calm, but his eyes were almost daring the tree to challenge him.. As stupid as the seemed. His hooves pranced on their own accord as he eyed the tree. “Which one do I want, hmm hmm hmm.”

It truly had felt like a long time, despite it having been a year or so since the last time she saw him. Actually, she had been hanging out with her other friend, Meshach, during those days, but she hadn't seen the little unicorn in over a month or so, and she had just finished growing. It felt great now, to be able to soar at speeds she never dreamed of, but then, she hadn't met or seen any of her friends from when she was a foal; not that she had had a lot.
She grinned at the teasing note in his voice, but did nothing more to comment on it, until he said he wanted to see if he could knocked down more apples without getting knocked silly in return. She suppressed an amused laugh. "Actually, I was just diving through foalhood memories, so in a way I suppose I was waiting to see if you showed up, but then again, I guess I was. It's nice to see old friends again, after all." She smiled, thinking that she would be okay with being friendly for once.
"It really hasn't been too long if you think about it," she joked. "I mean, a year or so? C'mon, that can't be that long!" She turned to look back at the tree again, hearing the challenge in her mind as she listened to Faolen's words. "Why don't you try for the biggest one up there?" she indicated the area towards the top of the tree, where the reddest, biggest, ripest apples hung, just waiting to be eaten by the Soquili below. "I think you're big enough to knock all the apples down this time," she challenged.
