This is my banner, should I ever create an artshop here on Gaia. Should I go for it, or not?

If you have enough free time and artistic energy, yes.
I used to have an art shop. It was fun -- I got to draw a lot, got to practice drawing people, made a lot of money... also gave me something to do with my craploads of free time. Eventually I got major artist's block and 'temporarily' closed for a few months. Then I realized my life was a lot busier and I wasn't gonna actually reopen, so I just closed it for good. But while it lasted, it was pretty sweet.
Tips for starting out -- establish your prices beforehand, write out lists of what you aren't willing to draw, set up a waiting list, decide how long the waiting list gets before you stop putting new people on it because it's too damn long, figure out about how long each commission will take between the request and the final product/payment, and make a form for people to fill out if they want to order art, it makes things run a lot smoother and makes sure that they won't leave out anything you need to know. Also make sure you set up prices for different sizes, colored/shaded/just lineart, multiple people... if you want to charge more for cluttered avvies or anything like that... and put whether or not you're willing to negotiate prices for things not mentioned in the first post(s).
Happy drawing smile If you've got the talent, it's a really quick, easy, and fun way to make money on this site.

I think you should do it. Just be prepared for criticism and the time-consumption factor. Kori probably knows better than me, but if you want to seriously sell art, I would think it'd probably be in your advantage to download a free trial version of PSP or Photoshop or another more professional drawing program. GIMP isn't awful, it's just not nearly as good as the alternatives. On a whole people are more likely to buy from people who have the more polished tools because it usually means more polished art. If someone is going to spend 500 or 1000 gold on art, they're going to be critical and nitpicky about supposed faults. That said, you still can create art with MSPaint and GIMP, it's just going to be more time consuming and will probably need to sell for less gold.

Okay, I understand it's going to be hard, since I'm using very basic programs and all, but thanks for the support- I think I'm going to go through with this. I'll start by offering my services in this guild, and move on.
Wade- you said you wanted art? Would you like me to draw you anything?

Pyromaniacal Wave If someone is going to spend 500 or 1000 gold on art, they're going to be critical and nitpicky about supposed faults. I'm not an expert on prices, but as far as I know, sorry Kristy, that's totally incorrect. That's SUPER cheap for art. I was selling Photoshop-drawn fully colored and shaded full-body pictures for I think between 1500 and 2000 and was told multiple times I could easily charge more or my prices were really cheap. I've seen some art shops with prices that looked ridiculously high... but they had plenty of customers. If you want to be sure the price is right, I think there's a forum somewhere where you can ask about that. Give a few examples and ask people what they'd pay. Or skip that step and just have your first few actual customers haggle a price with you directly, then base your prices off of that. Also, another tip I just thought of -- it's always good to have lots of examples, so if you don't already have some, have an opening sale so people will hopefully buy more and then you'll have finished pieces to put up. (Will also attract customers... help initially get the word out about your shop... possibly just a good idea in general razz )

I guess I was assuming Molly would be doing rough headshot kinda pieces, based on her banner, which tend to sell for a bit less. Good artists, based on what art I've bought, charged between 2500-5000 gold for full bodies. I'd agree your shop was very moderately priced as well, Kori. You totally undersold yourself. You could have easily sold your art at 5000 a pop. Especially after a while, when you seemed to fall into a groove stylistically. Your later art is totally enivable.

Well, I've sold my first body shot. Check the profile of "Merill" for the art, unless she hasn't posted it up yet. It's not my best work, but I've been practicing drawing sketches of Harry Potter and such on MSPaint, and I've been getting a little better...
(Note: I can draw what I consider *better* off of the computer. The mouse is just really shaky...I need help with this. sweatdrop )

Oooh congrats!
If you don't have a scanner, you could always take a picture of hand-drawn artwork with a digital camera and upload it on the computer. Then you could clean it up with an art program if you needed to (smudges and such).

Yaaay.
You could try a couple of avatars and sell them half price or something if you get bored of Harry.

Molly, do you have any friends with a tablet you could borrow sometimes? Tablets are god's work. They're amazing. heart Mine's actually at my boyfriend's house right now xd I brought it over there last week so he could play with it and just haven't bothered to take it back yet... oh well, not like I have time to draw anything anyway... sweatdrop
But yeah, if you happen to have access to a tablet that solves ALL your problems. Otherwise just keep practicing with a mouse. If you have a scanner, maybe you could give your customers a choice of hand-drawn-then-scanned art or mouse-drawn art?

I don't have access to a scanner (Dad won't let me use it) or a camera (same excuse), but I'll try to switch over to it once I get one. And I lost my tablet pen, so that's out of the question too. Thanks for the suggestions though.
And yes, Harry is fun to draw, especially anime-style. razz
