Right...a friend of mine came over to my house yesterday and was going through all the sites in my bookmarks. He came across my Gaia profile and saw the banner in my signature. Quote: "Dude, you need to be shot for having that in your signature." "90% of the people on the internet don't care about grammar." "Everyone in that guild needs to be shot." "It takes too much effort to type correctly when everyone understands you just fine without half the vowels." I have nothing more to say on this.

O_o. Thats not true. It actually takes longer typing in "txt" or "1337" speak. So, your friend must be lazy. stare

It does depend on who you are...but most of the time, yes, people are plain lazy. It is about as much effort to type "without half the vowels" than with them.
Also, if people did not truly care about proper grammar, every website in every possible place on the Internet would have improper grammar. Not only that, our guild would not be needed, now would it?

I hate to say this but your friend is seriously misguided and wrong about his thoughts on good grammar. It is much more understandable to write comprehensively than to type in text talk or 1337 speak.

Items::
1. Opinions differ. As can be seen from other responses, some believe they should be shot. Maybe aiming for non-lethal areas, but shot just the same.
2. Speeds differ. Those used to typing 1337, txt-talk, or both, will probably type at the same speed as one who types normally.
3. More effort? I think not. Unless you hunt-and-peck to type, you can likely type things out easier if you find whatever suits you. Hands on center keys, a modified version of that, etc.
4. The more 1337 and txt-talk you read, the more you recognize it. When you do that, it becomes easier to understand. Since few people read it frequently here if they can avoid it, it is hard to understand. Those that do read it frequently usually understand more.
