Well, technically it's not entirely a Sondheim musical, but it counts, doesn't it? If it doesn't, you can delete this thread.
West Side Story wasn't the first musical I watched, but it was the one that really got me into musicals. I've listened to everything from the movie at least 16 times. I was crazy about it for months... but then I realized it isn't very good. xD; I still like it a lot, but I haven't watched it or listened to it in a while.

(Is it partially Sondheim? If not, I'll lock the thread until we get another subforum for general musicals.)

Wasn't it his very first job writing anything for professional theatre? Or was there something before that?

Osh Manifest Wasn't it his very first job writing anything for professional theatre? Or was there something before that? I have no idea. : D;;; That I know of, it's his earliest work. I mean, the Broadway production started in 1955... and most of his other work is 60s and 70s.

I remember when I was 8 years old, I had a switchblade comb that I used to sing "Once you're a jet...." I thought I was sooo cool!

I am mad about West Side Story, so much so that I sometimes walk around clicking in time like one of the Jets (yep, I'm that sad). I think it's brilliant, although in a very different way to Sweeney Todd. By the way, West Side Story was indeed Sondheim's first Broadway musical, unless you count Saturday Night, which really shouldn't count because it didn't make it to Broadway and was shelved for over 50 years.
