Khazi woke with a start, his heart beating loud in his chest. He looked to the sleeping form of Aruka, her light breathing rustling the leaves in their den. The time she kept him awake during the day couldn't shake his nocturnal nature, thus he could never sleep and yet was always tired. He sighed, stepping out of the cave nestled in a mountain that butted up against the jungle. The moon's light shone down on his face, and with a single thrust of his wings, he took to the air.

With darkness came a slight breeze, and the sun's hot rays were lifted making it a much better time for flying, especially for his dark leathery wings which took in the heat so easily. He flew over the island slowly, looking down at all the animals below sleeping on the beaches, and he finially landed on the beach, right in the foamy waves.

Isis was awakened by a splash in the water. Actually it wasn't really the water that woke her, it was the creature that splashed into the water. Isis lived on the beach so she was quite used to hearing splashes. But the sound of leather-like wings and the ferocious beating of someone's heart was too much for her to sleep through.

She remained half out of it as she looked up and saw the one known as Khazi, she knew him well from his reputation to be mean. He didn't look so mean right now though. He actually just looked lost in thought. She debated on whether or not to go and talk to him and finally decided to.

She stood up gently and flapped her wings to hover herself. Then she flew over to where he stood and looked down at him. After a few moments of her just staring at him she also plopped herself down on the watery sand and said, "Hello." Isis didn't look anyone in the eyes so she just stared at the waves crashing against her paws.

Khazi's ears flipped back, hearing the soft sounds of feathered wings flitting about, just before the creature attatched to them landed near him. He knew who it was, it was his job to know all of the creatures on the island. He didn't greet her right away, instead laying down on the beach, right in the ocean surf.

"Hello Isis. What are you doing up this late?" he asked, turning his head to her. She was a creature of the day, there were only a few others like him of the night, and they generally spent their time elsewhere. "You're never out with the moon." He looked away, back to the sparkling water and the moon's reflection shimmering there.

"I sensed an abnormality. The stories that are told about you do not fit your description right now," she didn't know if he knew what she was talking about or not so she decided to not continue with that thought.
"I'm never out with the moon because I do not like the moon. It brings the feeling of gloom as does its brother, Night." Her kind didn't like being out when it was past the time of the sun, he was right.

But something disturbed her about him, there's was just something about him that didn't seem right at all. "I feel the need to ask you this question: Is there something wrong?" She could very much understand if he didn't want to answer her, she wasn't going to try to push him. Isis just figured that she'd ask.

Khazi listened carefully, not truely understanding what she was talking about. "Abnormality? Stories?" He thought all of it over, and though he had no real clue what she was talking about with the abnormality... and he'd never heard stories about himself, but he was sure they weren't entertaining. He had always shown a hard outer shell to everyone except Aruka, who was the only one left anywhere near his age. She was the only one who knew his pain of losing everyone that ever mattered...

"The sun is far too constant. At least the moon looks different everynight. And you can look at it without seeing lights in your eyes for the next hour." He smiled at this. He looked over to her when she asked her question, it was one he was never sure how to answer. In this moment, was he okay? Yes. But was he every completely okay, in the longterm deeper sense... no. For once he answered as truthfully as he knew how. "I don't know."

"Yes the sun does have it's downsides, however, as beautiful as the moon is, I still cannot shake this feeling of gloom hanging around it. Kind of like the dark rain cloud that passes over the sun's warm rays. It leaves a mucky feeling perched in one's heart," Isis tried to explain how losing the sun's warmth to sink into the early night upset her, but she gave up. It'd be like trying to explain one's obsessions (not what the obsessions are, but why the obsessions are there), and that is just far too complicated.

"Khazi, I know that you don't trust a lot of people and its understandable. You seem to have a lot on your mind however. As well as a sort of sadness in the expression of your eyes. You said you don't know if there is something wrong? Would you like to talk about whatever you may be thinking about?" Isis knew it was a long shot, and she knew that Aruka was the only one that he trusted, but it was worth asking. Sometimes, others just need to know that they have someone to talk to.

Khazi turned to her and snorted, walking back out the the surf and back onto the beach. "You thought you would come down here and get me to spill my story just because you ask?" He shook himself from head to tail, salty water flying in every direction, and he opened his wings to free the water from them as well. "You are the open book, Uccello, but haven't you heard that Levigares are often vicious? You could get hurt out here." His eyes glowed a bit as he said this.. he himself was not dangerous for the sake of Aruka, but she certainly didn't know that.

He looked back to her for a moment before looking to the skies. "I don't want to talk, but would you fly with me? I haven't met anyone who could fly since my family died so long ago..." Khazi thought whistfully back to his younger days, where everything was so much easier. And though he didn't have Aruka then, he still felt like he was missing something from his former life...

Isis was rather shocked at his reaction, "I'm sorry. I don't get the hurtful aura off you. I figured that you were slightly different from the stories I've heard about Levigares. I guess I was wrong." She pawed at the sand during the tiny moment of silence. When Khazi broke the silence and asked if she would fly with him, she only nodded and spread her wings.

She hopped off the ground and hovered slightly above the water. Turning to look him in the eyes, her own eyes filled with sadness about hearing about the death of his family, "I'm sorry Khazi... about your family..." She tried her best to keep off the subject other than that, she didn't want to push it. He obviously didn't want to talk so she wasn't going to try to force him to. She, too, knew what it felt like to lose something important.

Khazi raised an eyebrow at her. Stories about himself, about other Levigares like him... who started these stories? And why did they seem so contradictory to reality? He supposed that the mere sight of them caused fear, as Levigares were certainly the most capable of destruction. He ignored her reaction for the time being as he smiled and took to the skies with a beat of his wings, flying over and ahead of her, but staying withing hearing range. "Don't worry about it. If they would have been smart and stayed within the caves perhaps the demons would have left them alone. I've moved past it."

He nodded ahead, beating his heavy wings as he headed out over the jungle. "Where did you come from Isis? I hadn't seen an Uccello in the longest time... and then you appeared. I suppose Luke could have brought you here, but I thought he would have told me something that important..." He thought back to the way she spoke to him, almost like she was hurt that he'd snapped at her. Khazi almost wanted to apologize, almost, but it wasn't in his nature to be sorry for something so small. He had hurt ninfea and equino who had said less in his early years, it was amazing he was able to control himself even after all his years of practice.

Isis flapped her feathered wings and kept up with him, he wanted to be ahead so she fell behind. Apparently he could still hear her, "It's always good to allow the past to be in the past." She smiled at what she said Sounds like something mother would say.

"Well Khazi, one night there was a Levigare who attacked the place where my family dwelt. My homeland, you could say. He was a young fellow, but even so, his species was still very strong. He ran rampant, killed many. I was about as old as he was, but I was far too weak to defend myself. I flew to find my mother and father, and when I did," she had to pause with talking for she remembered the sight of her parents, "they lay there, next to each other, with their throats gashed open." Her eyes filled with tears but she let not a single one fall, "I fled. I didn't even bother to stick around to see who was left alive, I wanted to get out of there. And through all of my days of traveling, I ended up here, washed up onto this very beach."

Khazi flipped upside down and slowed, pawing aimlessly at the stars as if he were playing with them. "Young Levigare are vicious and overconfident simply because they are born into a family who believe that's the only way to live. Often times they don't get to their full strengths until they're a few years old... which is the part the parents leave out." He wondered if she felt the same way he did when his parents died... no. No she was of the feathered wings, they always had stronger emotions, buried deeper. Khazi didn't even feel sad when his parents were killed, Isis had probably mourned for a month.

"You're lucky you got away. He was lucky your parents didn't fight back." He shook his head and flipped back over so he was flying normally, and he swooped lower so he could feel the top of the rainforest canopy below him. The leaves were smooth and never changing unlike the war which seemed to take so many and leave so little... and now it had crossed worlds... Would it never end?

"My parents never believed in fighting back. They would sooner die than try to hurt anyone, even someone attacking them. They taught me to believe that once one commits such a heinous crime, fate will be after them. They said, 'Don't ever fight back. If fate wishes you to live on after the battle, then you will live.' I guess fate never wanted them to stay alive," Isis said. She no longer mourned for her parents. Her parents told her not to mourn at all and that no one was to blame. Isis still didn't believe that, not even now.

Isis flew in silence, flapping her wings almost in synchronization with Khazi. She couldn't help herself when she talked about her parents. She honestly just wanted someone to listen. Maybe when Fate is ready, it'll find me someone to listen to me. I'll mate with someone who is willing to talk about everything for hours even days on end. "But Fate can't be trusted, not anymore," she mumbled almost inaudibly.

Khazi couldn't understand how anyone, even the most peaceful of creatures, could give up their lives so willingly for whatever reason. Didn't they have any sense of self preservation? Isis seemed to, there was a bit of regret in her voice like she wished they had done more to keep their lives. "Fate is an illusion. If you want something to happen, do it yourself, if you don't, then do nothing. The only thing holding them away from life is their belief that peace is better than death. You have to fight for the things you want. Even now, when I know that I'm stronger than just about everyone on this island and that I was made to kill, that's not the life I want. Instinct tells me that's what I need to do but I have to fight against it everyday."

He looked down, noticing they were passing over the den he shared with Aruka and he smiled. "It's worth it though."
PostPosted: Wed Jul 11, 2007 4:09 pm

"That's absurd. How can I fight for something if I don't even know how to fight? I was always taught that death is better than stooping to another's level to fight back, because if you fight back and kill them, their blood is on your hands. And that just leads to a guilty conscience," Isis explained. "Besides, it's not like there's anything left to fight for in this world when you've already lost it all."

Isis did have major regret in the words she spoke, but that's how she was raised and she wasn't willing to change that. She didn't even know what she was saying, did she really wish for death that much? She could get hurt and heal her wounds, anyone she knew, she could heal with a mere song. But she hadn't have been able to help her parents. While she was growing up, she was constantly 'slapped in the face' if you will, about how her ability had failed on her when she needed it most. She needed that heal to save her parents, and she had failed to do so. It's not like she didn't have anyone there to listen to her, and she knew that others have had it worse than she, but she still longed for something to ease the wounds that she could not heal herself. The emotional scars that seeped up and damaged her after seeing her parents killed right in front of her.

"You practice and learn. If you learn well, you can fight without killing, just hurting so they can't fight you any longer. It's very useful when you want neither of you to die, though I've never done that myself. When I fight, I fight to kill, because I only fight for my food and for Aruka. I won't take the chance of anyone getting near her. She's all I have left, and she can't fight for herself."

He remembered the night Aruka's team had come, remembered how they had scared those within the den they slept by blowing the entrance... His group had gotten so very angry and when a cattivo ninfea got caught in the crossfire, it went all downhill. He could have saved his family... he had such speed that if he wished he could have handled them all before they even noticed they were alone. But Aruka's screams rang in his ears and he felt the need to go to her aide instead... why had he done that? He'd never known, but in the end it didn't matter. He'd done what he'd done and although everyone he'd ever grown attatched to was dead, at least he still had a bit of each of them with him.
