If it's your first time to this thread...
I'm making an epic 3D vid of kitties fighting or something. It's going to be something really over the top and crazy... explosions and fire dragons and ... lasers, and... well, it's a practice in animation, so the more insane it is, the better. I'm just gonna post my progress here.

COME ONE COME ALL! SEE YOUR SWORD DESIGN IN 3D AND GET 10k GOLD! AND ALSO GIVE ME A HAND WITH MY PROJECT!

User Image

Doesn't this sword look rather rusty and sad?

That's right! I want the culties to help texture a sword and make this sword happy! I'll put the winning entry in my weird kitty video. Won't that make you happy? But...! Even if you don't win, I'll give you a couple of renders of it in 3D anyway, just so you can see how it looks!

So without further ado, the prizes:
First place gets their sword in the video and 10,000 gold.
Second place gets 1,000 gold.
Everyone who participates gets a couple of renders of their sword in 3D.

RULES

  • You have one week! This contest ends on Sunday 22nd.
  • You must use the large image (NOT the thumbnails!) to draw the sword. The image is 1024 x 1024 pixels.
  • The sword is meant to be serious looking, so if it looks silly it will not be considered an entry.
  • You should try to provide two images -- one with the lines provided, and one without. If you don't have a image editing program, you can just give the one without lines.
  • Upload the image on your own server and post it here to enter.
  • The winner must send the original-size image to my email.
  • The winner's entry will most likely be slightly edited in order to match in with what I need.

THINGS TO KNOW

  • The quality of the image is important. If you have a brilliant design, but a crappy drawing, it's probably not going to do so well -- that is, unless it's so good it impresses me so much that I need to make a good quality copy of it just to use it.
  • If you don't know how to add neat textures to your picture, don't worry. I can add them in later. Just focus on solid colours and the actual design.
  • I can also do relief. Just describe which parts of your sword stick out when you submit your entry.
  • You can also describe which parts of your sword are shinier.
  • I can also do transparency. You can have a hole in your sword if you want. But try to avoid having one just for the sake of having it, because it might not look great.
  • Don't worry about staying in the outside lines! The colours outside of them don't show up at all. You're better off colouring outside of it to make sure you don't miss anything.
  • Don't feel that you need to choose a different colour for every single line you see. The lines just stand for the different polygons I used for the model.

Here's the picture you colour in:

I hope lots of people join, and that you have fun. Thanks for reading.

TODAY

Well, I found a decent rock texture, and applied it. Sure enough, as Forusei-kun said, doesnt really match. Whatever, I don't care. It looks better up close, so there. It's here to stay, at least for now.

I also made a few more rocks -- much easier now that the texture is complete. And even more rocks, with a sandy floor instead. Obviously both textures in this case are just rough. The sand one is just a flat shade. Do you guys think I should stick with a rocky/stony texture or a sandy one? Also, should I fill the entire landscape with the rock or should I just have a small patch, like I have now?

I also accidently changed the eye colour to all black while I was animating blend shapes... and oddly enough, I think it looks a bit better. Can't really tell where Kitty is looking, though. I tried making the pupils wider (close up). I think it looks better.

Here are two images side by side for comparison.

Do you guys think it's better, too?

And finally, I did a rough texturing and editing on the hero kitty to make our villain kitty. Needs a bit more work, but getting there.

... 20 minute sketches... those, I am officially done at any and all graphical art

In all truth, those are awesome, the first two are a bit on the blurred side, but I actually like that look. the cat sketches are really good, and hell cute and the 3-D model is impressive as well.

@FS and Trenn: ZOMG! In Maya 8.5 you can split MULTIPLE polys with Split Poly!

xd Yea, that tool is absolutely critical. It has been around in past versions, too.

Well, I haven't commented on your work for a while now, so here's a lengthy ramble ^_^

You have a very distinct style, which in my experience is something that lots of people envy, so I'm glad to see you utilising your style again here to such good effect.

20 minute sketches are a superb idea imo, I heard about them before in a certain context being used by a paticular conceptual artist to decide on good angles for a scene (I can't remember his name though).
At any rate, they're something that any artist should try at some point.

As for your sketches themselves, I admire your knowledge of lighting and tone, which must be second nature now. I hope that you will be able to develop something that you sketched into a finished piece.

Oh, and the Split Poly tool sounds like a tool from Max, can't quite remember all the names though. Still, that's the thing about 3D packages, you're doing something in one way, then one day you find out about a tool that could have saved you hours XD.

Keep it up anyways, for what it's worth you're amongst my favourite artists from the cult:

Yourself = Favourite Tonal and shade Artist
Trenn = Favourite Line Artist
BC = Favourite Cartoonist

No offense intended to anyone else, of course ^___^.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Lots of you commented on the "blurry effect" I had in the first two images. It wasn't really so much an intentional effect as it was a side-effect of being too lazy to define any sort of detail... oh well, I guess it worked out. =P I only wanted to have a general idea of the colours and lighting, really.

@Trenn: Are you serious?! I was using 7 a while ago and I had to split one stupid poly at a time! What I mean is that I don't need to click every edge I want to split, I can just click two edges really far apart and a nice line is then drawn between them. Two clicks and I am done. Hooray!

@FS: Yeah, stupid hidden tools. I'm learning more every day!

@All: This model is intentionally simple since I really want to practice animation. I'm going to use the same model (except I'll just change the colour or something) and engage them in an EPIC BATTLE SEQUENCE!
I'll need 1) epic music and 2) ideas for epic fight scenes. I'll be doing a short storyboard. But if you can help me in either 1 or 2, post it here please.

So far, I'm planning on giving the good kitty a cape, and the bad kitty some evil helm thing. There might be a pink kitty with a ribbon. Lots of things are gonna explode.

Oh, and for those of you who are interested, I finished the kitty model.

User Image

I spent so long making the mesh neat that it doesn't look much like the original drawing anymore. Oh well. At least the mesh is tidy.

User Image

Quick render.

User Image

Texturing. Check out the seams on that. Oh well, I tried. I'll do a texture tomorrow, unless I can convince them to let me use Maya Fur on it.

User Image

My UVs. Still not very good, but an improvement from my previous maps. I actually cut and sewed some stuff together. It took forever.

I'm pretty sure you could split multiple polys in previous versions. Maybe I'm mistaken.

Hooray!
PostPosted: Thu Jul 12, 2007 5:21 am

I'm pretty sure there wasn't!

I finished the kitty model, whoopee.
I need to rig it... I'm terrible at rigging.
Should I use FK or IK?

Wow, it look nice after textured.
Eh, give 'em a nose.

So you need some fast paced music?

Have a listen to 403 forbiddenas Blaze of life.

Their music can be found here.

Also, take a look at the bottom left hand corner song. (I can't see the name because my comp. can't display it.)
