Ok here i go. In manga, when it specifically says 'Summer Vacation', they go to school. Not summer school, either. I mean, SCHOOL school. Not Juku. SCHOOL. I heared their school year starts in Spring and they only get a short break. So that means like, they get a few weeks off, like 3 or 4, for the WHOLE YEAR?! I AM SO CONFUSED

I'm not exacty sure about their school system but in Hawaii (or atleast when I was on Oahu) when I attended Millilani Middle, we were on a year-round schedule where we'd go to school 3-4 weeks at a time and then have 2 weeks off and it was like this all year long.

At the school I went to in Japan, they had mandatory lessons the first week of summer break. I'm not sure how it is everywhere.

You can't believe everything you read in manga. But I guess that's not too far from the truth. Just type into google Japanese education system and you'll get some information from there.

From what I know:

Semester 1 starts in April

Semester 2 starts in September

They go to school for July, and get August off.

They go to school every second saturday during school.

Their schooling is longer than that off the U.S. and Canada.

They have to take entrance exams into middle school (I think?), high school, and university.

It's really tough.

They have school uniforms.

And that is the basics.

Elementary School - is K-6th

Junior High School - is 7th- 9th

High School - is 10th-12th

Then they either go to college or a university.

At least that's what I figured out. If I'm wrong I don't mind being corrected.

yep your right (Hiroshima university academic calender)
First Semester (April 1 - September 30)

April 1: First Day of the Academic Year

April 1 - April 8: Spring Vacation

April 3: Entrance Ceremony

April 4 - July 31: Classes

August 1 - September 30: Summer Vacation

Second Semester (October 1 - March 31)

October 1 - December 23: Classes

November 5: University Anniversary Day

December 24 - January 7: Winter Vacation

January 8 - February 11: Classes

February 12 - March 31: End-of-Academic-Year Holidays

March 25: Degree Conferment Ceremony

March 31: Last Day of the Academic Year

yeah middle high and univ all have entrance exams even some elementary schools but those are the prestige ones.
i think for the Saturday school one it depends on the school but now its changing so that they get the weekend off

yep, yep... the Asian schooling is very hard and more strict. (thats why most of us are pretty into academics and are smart.. plz dont be offended ^^ wink

what 'missgothicloitta' have quoted are right. (she knows more than me though so some things im not so sure sweatdrop )

the exams are extremely hard to do and you dont really need to go to high school and up.

also... they take classes on the weekends too sometimes. ^^

It's really unlikely for them not to continue though, usually if they aren't going to a regular high school, students go to specialised schools for technical training or schools with special programs, such as English language.
I have a friend who went to a school in Hiroshima that is a one hour bus ride to and from the school she attends.
