Let's have an open discussion on colors! Yaaay! I am terrible with color. I mostly stick to one tone, or analogous colors to stay on the safe side. I've studied color before, but somehow my eyes just end up noticing how to use tonal differences and completely looks past how the actual color is applied. It's like I'm a hue-tard. Ahahaha hahaha! ... hum. Does anyone have any tips?

i think this is a good idea: color is hard.
i use color primarily to create a certain mood or feeling to my work. if i don't know what mood i'm working with, it tends to be a rainbow, and that just looks lame (most of the time).
when working with color, i try to keep in mind what sort of mood the peice is supposed to evoke. for example, if it's sad, i try to stick with muted blues and purples. if it's supposed to be fantasy and dream-like, i tend to use purples and blues and aqua-type colors. a happier scene would have brighter, possibly bolder, colors.
but like i said: color is hard. it takes serious work.
also, i love the word "hue-tard"; that's amazing xp

Yeah, color is very important for creating emotional responses.... and rainbows are fun. biggrin
I checked out a book from the library that explains a lot of things I never actually understood... kinda sad since I took a color theory class and didn't learn anything new, but I read four chapters of this simple how-to book and suddenly it all becomes clear. It's called "Color, A course in mastering the art of mixing colors" by Betty Edwards, if anyone is interested. Ugh, book pushing. Perhaps I'll explain some of the ideas in the book if anyone is interested.
We should make a hue-tard club. xd

my theory in mixing colors is simple: just do it. if it works, it works. if it doesn't, well, next time you know not to mix the same colors again. that's pretty much how i learned. also, look at what type of color pallets your favorite artists use and try to analyze why or how it works. the more you make mistakes, the more you learn. i've trained my eyes to see the different colors within just one hue when i color a drawing/painting. i can't say i get it right everytime, but the times i don't get right means a lot more to me then the times that i do. reading about color theory and color pallets will give you an understanding, but until you actually get down and dirty and actually experience it for yourself, you won't truly understand the usage of colors.
at least this is how i feel.
we can analyze a few nicely done drawings/paintings and a few not so nicely done drawings/paintings. maybe that'll help out everyone.

I find mixing colours quite easy. when other people can't work it out and they ask me, I can say "put in some yellow" and it'll work...but I have no idea how I do it..so I don't know how to give you any tips! I just...do it sweatdrop I suppose it comes from my Dad...his job years ago used to be mixing colours of paint for tins to sell in the shops. 3nodding I agree with Sox, just mix a colour in you think works, and if not, try another one. just keep trying and you'll learn as you go along.

yay for heather. haha color coordination wise, 3rd one is my favorite, and 2nd one is my least favorite. technique wise, i think the last one is the most well done one, except the dragons look pasted on instead of part of the drawing. yes, they stand out, but it doesn't flow together. know what i mean? i just saw this today http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/59905761/it's very purple, but it's sort of balanced out by the yellow. there are some parts that i would probably change color wise, but still a very good example to show.

the first and third are my favourites. I think the colour has been used to enhance the image in them far more than the other pictures. It sets a mood in the 3rd one especially.
The one I like the least is the 4th one...there is too much orange in it..definately...the colours are too bright. I knwo it's meant to be colourful but it's too colourful..the blue of the sky should have been made a little less bright..and the blue of the denim on the figure could have been less bright too.

Ooh, I think the last one is my favorite. The third one is nice, too. Perhaps I am a sucker for dulled color. I agree that there is too much competition between the colors in the fourth one.... orange and blue or opposite, so they make a confusing eyesore when presented in the same intensity all over like that...
So then, what is everyone's favorite color combinations that they've found?

yay for being appreciated! xp
i like the colors on the last one quite a lot, but i agree with capn' that the dragons don't look very "in" the picture.
i think the first one is nice in that there are multiple tones and colors, but they work pretty nicely together. i think, however, the artist should have taken it a bit further and blended these tones (especially on the cloak thingy) to create a smoother effect.
the third one that everyone is so crazy about is (ironically, i think) CG. the colors, though, work very well together (and that is something that seems very hard to do with CG--make good color schemes). i think the third one is my favorite in that the colors are dull and realistic and there is plenty of motion in the picture. as a side note: wtf is that horse looking at?
@capn': that's a neat picture, almost monochromatic.
my favorite color combination...? it really depends on the scene, but i'm really fond of puples and aquas/blues, along with a little pink mixed in. i like cool colors.

red and black lol no I kid...I like red and black clothing...but in art work...I'd say....blue and red...they clash if they are really bright but I like the way the red stands out against the blue, because they are too opposing colours mixed together. I also like red and orange and yellow blended together, like in flames. That always attracts my attention.
I like blues but it depends on the type of blue...for instance my room is dark blue, so I like that, and I also like the blue colour that's on Hackney's cube xp but I don't like pale blues or blues that have grey tones in.

i dunno, i think it's just a little too saturated. it looks nice though. i think it's the pastel-ish tones that make that green not to "ow it hurts my eyes"

I'm the same. I don't know how I do it, but I'm very good at color composition and shading. However... I can't draw mechanical stuff and non-organic-shaped things to save my life. It's horrible. It's my one major flaw when it comes to art.

I hadn't commented in here??? Shame on me!
Color... is a new realm of thought for me. Well, I mean it's been two or three years since I first started really playing with color, but it's still something I'm experimenting with. The watercolor class I took really helped me, because I was forced to quite literally play in the paints. But instructor did not let us use black or white paints, so we had to make our own and figured out well in advance where we wanted white to show through. It was a very interesting (and fun) class for me.
@Mystifying: Uggggh... Man-made boxes... I hate drawing non-organic things... xp
