A change of clothes for each day is usually a good idea. Bringing food from home so you don't have to chuck out large amounts of money would also be smart. You need a photo ID to get your badge. Other than that, it's whatever. Those are the essentials, everything else is up to you.

- Change of clothes for each day, plus extra socks and underwear. Don't stink.
- Soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrush/toothpaste, hairbrush/comb. Again, don't stink, and be well-groomed.
- Comfortable shoes; you WILL be walking a lot.
- Enough money to pay for your hotel room, and get home, at minimum.

Aside from that, I recommend bringing a book, Gameboy, or something similar to keep yourself busy in lines. You will be waiting in lines. Food is a good idea too since the food in the BCC's expensive - stuff that's lightweight and nutritious is best. Ramen has no nutritional value beyond carbs and salt, so bring Powerbars or something that might remotely count as real food instead.

Oh - The 6, 2, 1 Rule. Follow it. 6 hours of sleep, 2 meals (a meal, by definition, is not a bag of chips), and 1 shower a day. MINIMUM. That way you don't die, or smell like you did. Stay hydrated, too. The BCC has water fountains and whatnot, and we won't object to you carrying around a water bottle. (Heck, we sold Otakon-branded Nalgene bottles at the merch table once.)

For just the convention, without worrying about clothes and such, the basics generally are:

-Digital Camera (with a cleared out memory card) or regular camera
-Cell phone
-Wallet
(pen and paper is also useful for random things you might want to write down)

I went last year, and though I had random stuff to keep me busy in lines, I didn't use any of it. I just talked while we waited in lines. Mostly to the people who came with me, but people in general seemed to be in a good mood, and I did chat a bit with the people in front of and behind us in line. Some people also like to bring their sketchbooks. (We were looking at the guy behind us' sketchbook.)

all of the above is true, however, I never needed my gameboy while waiting in line. people tend ot tlk to me about anything and everything under the sun and im too busy checking out the competition and costumes and see who had storebought and who took the time to actually work on it. mine this year looks crappy but hey its not a gaia avatar like I did last year with my OMFG hat.

i think im fortunate enough to have gotten a hotel this time. my friend is bringing a rice cooker and we will share meals.

Aside from what has been mentioned above, I would suggest that you bring 10-20 dollars extra, and store it in a safe place IN your hotel room. Somewhere it won't be easily available if you suddenly think "O, I need that plushie!"

That money can then be used for real emergencies, like food, transportation, or starting a pool to bail your friends out of jail.

If you happen to have jail-prone friends.
