I've known about that for a long time. There's other stories and some urban legends that talk about it, but it's true. It CAN happen, and it CAN kill you.

I ALWAYS STEERED CLEAR OF THE DRAINS WHEN I WAS LITTLE
BUT LIKE
IN OUR POOL AT HOME, THE DRAINS WERE INSIDE THESE LITTLE ALCOVES
SO
YOU COULDN'T GET SUCKED IN...
and if you got sucked in it would really just be your arm
but even then
there was a net thingy that you had to take out and it caught leaves and s**t so
I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY I'M TALKING ABOUT THIS BUT WHY DON'T THEY MAKE ALL THE POOLS LIKE THIS!? Ours was pretty suck-proof.
