Two of my recent favorites are David Weber's Honor Harrington series, and Eric Flint's 1634 (alternate history) series.

The Host, by Stephenie Meyer.
I believe it's the only "soft" sci-fi book I've read.
The way she describes it is "Science fiction for people who don't like science fiction."

It's about aliens... and to start off... I'm terrified of anything that involves aliens, but I gave this book a shot, and it's one of my favourites. <3

Anything by Orson Scott Card; All his Sci-Fi books are brilliant. I particularly like the ones taking place in the same universe of Enders Game.

Dune by Frank Hubert is also brilliant.

Cateye. I don't remember the authors name offhand but it remains one of my all time favorite science fiction books.

"Catseye" by Andre Norton perhaps? Or "Catspaw" by Joan D. Vinge?
