Unless you've been living under a rock for the past year (or at least, you've been stuck out in space that long), you probably know that the final book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is coming out on July 21. If you're a Harry Potter fan, like me, you're aching to find out how it all comes out; if you're not, you're probably tired of hearing about it. Well, too bad. wink
To celebrate, here is a Harry Potter contest that everyone can participate in, whether you know anything about the books at all. The first prize is 10,000 gold, with an optional prize of 5,000 gold . Second prize is 5,000 gold. Here are the rules:
The goal:
First prize: Predict the first letter of the first word of Chapter One of the book, or choose the closest letter to that letter (if that letter wasn't chosen).
Optional prize: Predict the first word of Chapter One of the book.
Second prize: Choose the closest letter to the winning first prize letter.
To enter:
Reply to this post with your letter and/or word by July 20, 2007. Only one entry is allowed. If you want to change your choice, either edit your post or reply again -- only your LAST reply in this thread will count.
Rules
1. Only one entry -- your last reply to this thread -- will be counted.
2. Enter by July 20, 2007. Any posts dated after this date will not be considered. I'll try to remember to lock the thread at 12:01 a.m. on July 21.
3. Tied winning entries will share the prize.
4. The word in question is the first word of chapter one, and not the introduction, prologue, etc., if they exist. If the chapters don't have numbers, the judge (meaning me) will decide what exactly is chapter one.
5. If you're at all involved in the creation/publishing of the book and already know the answer, please don't enter.
Other stuff
1. Note that the second prize letter is relative to the winning first prize letter, and *not* the actual first letter (which will be different if no one guesses the correctly).
2. It's possible to win the optional prize but not the first prize, if you guess a letter and then a word that doesn't start with that letter. It's also possible for one person to win the first prize and a different person to win the optional prize. Weird, huh?
3. It's possible to win more gold in second place than in first place -- say, if 5 people choose C and win, and 1 person chooses D.
4. Second place letters that are different but equidistant from the first place letter all share in the same prize.
5. I got this idea from another forum I used to be a member of when the last book came out. I think the last book's letter was "I."

The book's out, in Britain, so it's time to close the contest. Hopefully the next contest will be more fun! smile
