So I was re-reading The Essential POTO and noticed an interesting part at the end of 'Apollo's Lyre"

The common version goes like this:

"You are frightened...but do you love me? If Erik were good-looking, would you love me, Christine?"

She rose in her turn, put her two trembling arms round the young man's neck and said:

"Oh, my betrothed of a day, if I did not love you, I would not give you my lips! Take them, for the first time and the last."

In the unabridged version:

"You're afraid. But do you love me? If Erik were handsome, would you love me Christine?"

"Unhappy man! Why do you tempt destiny? Why do you ask me about things that I hide deep in my conscience the way I would hide a sin?"

She got to her feet and trembling, put her lovely arms around the young man, saying "Oh my fiance of a single day, if I did not love you, I would not give you my lips. For the first and last time, take them."
-----
Interesting indeed. Makes you go "What...the?".
So does Christine actually have feelings for Erik (other than horror and pity)?
And when she said "for the last time", did she kiss Raoul thinking that Erik will take her for good?

That last little bit makes no sense to me. She and Raoul were not betrothed for only a day, and they had kissed plenty of times before, as far as I can remember.

As for that sentence, it does not seem like she is saying she loves him, yet wants to hide it because it is not meant to be. It's more like he is the devil giving her a twisted bargain, which he really is. I imagine, though, she had thought of loving Erik, when she did not know of his face. After all, he had been, at one point, her reason for living and loving music again. It basically all shattered when the mask came away, and even before then when she realized her angel was nothing more than a man deceiving her.

She probably meant that Raoul was her first kiss. I guess 'fiance for a day' was supposed to mean how temporary their engagement will be. *shrugs* I mean, wasn't Raoul suppose to leave anyway? I gotta reread the book again.

And I guess she was saying that to Raoul to reassure him that her love was for him. It's like "Why are you pressing further when you know I love you?"
Cheesy, but yeah, my opinion. I did think she tried to consider loving Erik, but the idea of loving someone who does horrible things (like lie and kill) seems wrong and frightens her.

Leave? No, after he and the Persian had been freed of the torture chamber by way of almost drowning, he was basically passed out/recovering at that time. He was still technically a prisoner, even though Christine had turned the scorpion, which had saved him.

It is a very confusing moment in the book, I admit.

What the?! O___o
I wasn't referring to that. XD
I was referring to Raoul leaving France (mentioned at Chapter 12: Above the Trapdoors). He said something about leaving in a month for a polar expedition. Hence, Christine proposes a secret engagement, since they may not see each other ever again.

XD

Shows how much I pay attention.

Though, I think Raoul was planning to bring Christine with him out of France, to wherever he thought she would be safe from his family, and Erik. It was simply that Christine didn't want to because she wanted a proper end and goodbye towards Erik. Which got her kidnapped.

*raises hand* I think Raoul was right on when he said that Christine's feelings were Erik were 'a kind of a thrill'. Just look at what the whole angsty, d genius does for the phangirls... Maybe Christine felt a bit of the same kind of fixation.

Once again, I agree with everyone, including Uta, although she was a little lost at first.

I mean, you can feel pity for someone and still like/love them. Maybe she didn't love him as much as she did Raoul, but had a sort of crush on the poor soul. Just my twisted mind thinking as I type, again...

Well, there are some people who believe the theory that Christine loved Erik as a father, or like one. After all, he did masquerade as an angel, something her father had promised to send her with his dying breath. Christine was very attatched to her father, so I think she may have seen a bit of him in Erik with his love for music, because her father was a violinist who taught Christine to sing when she was small.
