Some people say that anime is what comes from Japan only. Others, such as myself, say that the feel and style, as well as the inspiration is what counts.
Naruto is an anime. It has shinobi, a true piece of Japanese culture. It was created by the manga-ka Masashi Kishimoto in Japan. The anime originated in Japan, only to be exported to the US and elsewhere.
Avatar: The Last Airbender, if you look at it the right way, is also an anime. It is heavily influenced by eastern culture. For example, the bending styles are all based off Chinese martial arts. And the Fire Nation's war reminds one of Japan's expansion in the early 20th century.
The animation and art style also reminds one of anime. The big-eyes-small-mouth combo, the easily recognizable hair styles (Katara's hair loopies, Sokka's wolf tail, Zhao's beard, Iroh's receding hairline), and the combination of action and comedy all cry anime.
So, who defines anime like me? Who is more of a purist? Who is an Avatard while not identifying it as an anime?

always going forward, yet repeating itself.
