Grumpy takes on a new definition for Calin, who enjoys nothing more than seeing other people either bickering or in pain - especially if he's the one who is arguing with them or causing the pain. He's also extremely territorial, and will get upset if you so much as glance at his belongings. Be afraid - despite his small stature, he's not afraid to use that claw!

Hello. Um, my name is Five. I used to be called #516, but my name is Five. There's a difference.

I used to live somewhere else, too. With One. One was part of Sosiqui, though, and when Sosiqui took One back to be part of her... she took me to be part of her family too. I''m still not sure about this strange other Gaia, but I guess it's okay, even if it is kind of weird. Sosiqui has a game in it with some little black mages that look like me. That''s kind of weird too.

It was also kind of weird when Sosiqui came home with this bottle. She says it's going to be alive someday. That's REALLY weird, and I'm not sure how that's going to work, but she seems to be sure that's right. Sosiqui said I need to learn responsibility and to care for something, and that it'll give me something to do and a new friend. I hope so. She also said that she didn't need "another blasted thing to take care of, with this and that bloody egg that somebody left on the porch...". (She told me not to write that down, but this is MY journal and not hers, so there.)

So I am taking care of this bottle... it will become something called a 'hayeta', she said. It moved into my little hut in the backyard, and it will live with me.

We'll be happy here, and I will write all about it in this journal.

~Five

Here is the bottle! It's really brightly colored and glowy. It also has a claw attached to one side, that Sosiqui says is from a crab. (She also says crab is expensive to eat, even though I didn't ASK her that. I'm not going to eat my bottle, and I'm not going to let her eat it either. Hmph.)

I feel some magic around it, too, but it's not a kind I recognize. Supposedly it's going to turn into a little person, or something.

WEIRD.

So far it is just a bottle. There isn't much to say about a bottle, except that the sand moves sometimes without me moving it at all. I keep it warm on my windowsill, in the sun. Sometimes I put my hat on top of it... when nobody is looking... I don't like people to see me without my hat on. But I guess it's okay for the bottle, since it doesn't have eyes.

This is me! It's a good picture, I think.

I'm pretty small. I'm only about three and a half feet tall. That doesn't count how big my hat is, though. I'm bigger with the hat!

I was... made... in another Gaia, an alternate one. Not the same as the one from the weird game with 'me' in it. I don't know anybody named Zidane or whatever. I was made in Durem! There are lots of my kind, which is why I am #516. We were made to be... servants, toys, weapons. I don't like to think about that.

Fortunately One bought me. She said I was made to be her friend! I used my magic to help keep her safe when I could. Then when she went back to be with Sosiqui, I came here too.

And so here I am. I guess it's okay to have my own room and a sort-of family. It's not bad, at least. And I always beat Riven at monopoly.

These are some of the people that I know now. I don't know a lot of people here, but two is still more than just one. Although One was very special to me...

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Sosiqui is... she's complicated and hard to understand. She used to be the same as One until they broke apart, and now they're the same again. Very hard. But she is a nice person. She looks just like One, and I see One in her a lot. It's still weird though. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to act around her a lot of the time.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Riven is Sosiqui's son. Not her born son, though. That's another hard to understand thing. He told me I didn't have to understand him, though. He seems nice. Riven comes to visit me sometimes, and he's curious about how the bottle will grow too. I guess he's a nice person, even if he's really bad at board games.

Here is the bottle when it came. It had really, really pretty colors! I still don't know how all this sand is going to turn into a person, though. It's still really weird.

July 30th - Sosiqui gave me the bottle. I'm going to take really good care of it, even if I'm not sure about this yet... because if it really IS going to be alive, then it needs to be taken care of and treated like a person. It's bad when people aren't treated like that...

Our little house is in the backyard of the house where Sosiqui and Riven live. Sosiqui helped us make it. It started as a fancy shed from a store, but we made it into something else.

Sosiqui likes how it looks. She designed it after a house in the game that has look-alikes of me in it. That's also kind of weird, but the house is cute. Here are some pictures:

The Outside - It looks kind of like this, only it's nestled partly into a forest. It is round, and has a cute door... and a big tall thatched roof that looks kind of like my hat. I like that part.

The Inside - It's a bit bigger than this, but similar. The egg sits in a place just like the egg in the picture! I have different pictures of nice things on the walls, and some little beanbags and chairs to sit in and stuff. And a bookshelf. No kitchen though, just a little pump-and-basin. I eat with Sosiqui in her house. Or I cook food with a fire spell....

The Upstairs - My bedroom is up the ladder! It has a cozy bed and a pointy ceiling. I like it here.

Calin Arrives

Five rolled over in his sleep, only to be woken up by a sudden CRASH. The little black mage sat up instantly, fumbling his hat off the bedpost and onto his head, then turning around looking for the source of the noise. "Wha...?"

The bottle. It was gone from the shelf he'd set it on before going to bed.

"Oh no, oh no..." Five breathed in horror. He'd never hear the end of it if it had broken. He quickly slid out of bed and ran over to where the bottle had been.

"WATCH it," a voice came from below, and a second later something clamped onto his sock, nearly missing one of his toes. Five stumbled and fell over - and when he sat up, the first thing he saw was the shards of the bottle. Broken. All over the floor.

"Oh no... OW!" Now his toe HURT, and he finally focused on his feet instead of the distressing sight of the bottle.

And there was something there - a small creature the color of the ashes the bottle had contained, with one crab claw firmly attached to Five's foot. "Who are you?" it demanded, letting up on the pressure a little bit.

"You're black like me," Five said, thrilled despite the pain in his toe. "I'm Five! I took care of you! Who are you?"

"I'm..." The Hayeta paused. "I'm ME," he said, finally, scowling and releasing Five's toe from his claw.

"I'm your owner!" Five said eagerly, then stopped as the Hayeta waved his claw menacingly. "What?"

"I don't belong to anybody," he said, annoyed, clicking his claw at Five. "How would you like it if you were just something somebody owned?"

Five thought about this... he DID know how that felt. And he hadn't liked it one bit. "Sorry," he said, immediately, and meant it. "I'll be your friend and take care of you, how about that?" he added, eager to make amends.

The Hayeta seemed to think about this. "I suppose," he said, grudgingly. "But I'm not yours."

"I can be your friend," Five said, earnestly.

Another moment of consideration. "You can be mine. Okay."

Five stood up, eyes bright with relief. "Are you hungry?" He offered his hand to the Hayeta.

"... I guess," the little creature admitted, and climbed on. Five lifted him up to the tabletop where he could hop down easily, then bustled off to the little stove and lit it with a basic fire spell.

"What do you like? I have oatmeal, and some apples, and..."

The Hayeta sat back against a pitcher and grinned to himself. It wasn't all bad, having somebody to take care of you.

Posession

Calin grumbled to himself as he paced along Five's windowsill, tugging with his claw at a length of thin wire that he was stringing across the window. Anybody trying to sneak in here would find themselves tangled or even cut by the wire... yes, of course.

Or that was the plan, anyway. In execution, he kept accidentally snipping through the wire with his claw, or tangling up his own legs. His glorious tripwire system was turning out nothing like his plan.

"Dammit."

"Why do you want to do that, anyway?" Five asked. The little black mage was sitting in one of the kitchen chairs, idly flipping through a book.

"Because it's MINE," Calin grunted, twitching as he accidentally cut the wire again.

Five sighed. Calin was very protective and grumpy, but... in a way, it felt good. The little Hayeta had bristled at Sosiqui when they'd met - and, of course, she'd bristled in return, and it could have been a nasty business if Five hadn't diverted Calin's attention with a quick bit of magic. But Calin had been so unpleasant because he was... jealous, really.

Five was HIS caretaker and HIS person, and not anybody else's, he'd hissed angrily as Five had taken him back to the little house.

It might have been posessiveness rather than love, but... Five had to admit that he rather liked it. After all, only one... well, two... people had ever thought he was ever worth keeping - one out of desperation, and the other out of duty. He'd never had anybody want him just because.

It was rather nice.

He looked up as Calin finally gave in and kicked the ball of wire off the windowsill, hard, sending it rattling across the room. "Not working?"

"No," the Hayeta grumbled, jumping onto the kitchen table and sitting down next to the sugar bowl in a huff. "I want that," he added, swinging his claw against the sugar bowl so that the china clanged.

"Mmmhm." Five fished out a cube and put it in front of Calin. "There you go. How come you like sweet thing so much when you're so grumpy?"

"Because sour is good in the brain, bad in the mouth," Calin answered, giving Five a cocky half-grin before snapping the sugar cube in half with his claw.

My Precious

"You're supposed to roll the dice, not steal them," Five said, somewhat peeved.

"But you gave them to me, they're MINE," Calin frumped, shoving them in the pile he was amassing. It currently contained all the $500 bills from Five's Monopoly set, plus Park Place and Boardwalk - and the shoe, the thimble and the iron. The dice sat on top, teetering somewhat unsteadily. "I like this game, I get stuff. Do some more."

"I can't, without the dice," Five answered, matter-of-factly.

Calin made a face, then reluctantly pulled the dice off the top and heaved them into the middle of the gameboard. "You're only borrowing them," he reminded Five, clacking his claw for emphasis.

"... right," Five sighed, deciding it was just easier to agree when the Hayeta was in one of his posessive moods. He rolled.

"Two, three, four, THAT'S MINE GIVE ME MONEY," Calin beamed, walking along the gameboard as Five scooted the hat along. The little black mage peeled a few bills off of his rapidly-shrinking hoard - Calin was suprisingly good at this, he was so very mercenary - and handed them to Calin, who accepted them in his claw.

"I need change," Five reminded him.

"What do you mean, change? Change what? Clothes?"

"No... I gave you more than I should have," Five pointed out. "You shoudl give me the difference back."

"... why would anyone do that? That's stupid," Calin declared with a grin.

"It's in the rules... the... hey, where are they?"

"These?" Calin pulled at the paper that was underneath his pile of loot.

"Oh."

Mine Mine Mine!

"This is mine, and this is mine, and THIS is mine," Calin muttered to himself, flicking through the grocery bag he was currently sitting in. The leftovers of his loot - his Halloween haul.

An entire holiday that revolved around people giving him stuff for being scary! This was FABULOUS. And Five had been more than willing to help cart him around, even if he had also needed to put up with his busybody mom and the quacking kid. A whole bag of candy, just for him.

And Calin was juuust small enough that all that 'fun size' candy truly WAS fun, rather than ridiculously tiny. Excellent.

The bag rustled as Calin moved around, carefully sorting the candy out. It was about halfway gone, now, but Five had given him some of the black mage's own haul, which had added to it - so it was time to sort.

s**t - Smarties, nameless candy in unidentifiable wrappers, raisins - in one corner.

Awesome - peanut butter cups, caramels, fancy candy bars, unusual treats - in another.

Of course, both piles were still HIS. Naturally. Just one was in favor and the other wasn't.

Except the raisins. Those could go out the window. The Hayeta grabbed one of the raisin boxes in his claw and scrambled awkwardly out of the bag, walking over to Five's little fireplace. It was lit, in accordance to the slowly dropping temperatures outside.

"Yeah, all right... roast! Burn!" Calin crowed, raising his claw over the edge of the fireplace and squeezing with all his might. The box creaked, then burst, spraying raisins into the flames with a series of extremely satisfying pops.

"Oh yeah."

"What're you doing?" Five groaned from his bed - the little mage had been sleeping.

"Just taking out the trash," Calin replied, pleased with himself as he chucked the mangled box in afterwards.
