Obsidian breathed in deeply and leaned back against the sterile stainless steel wall of the elevator as she watched the numbers on the elevator display change. Arriving at her floor, she pushed away from the wall and walked forward, holding tightly to the bag that she was carrying. Running her fingers through her short, layered hair, she searched for room she was seeking and smiled a little when she found it. Knocking softly, she pushed the door open and walked into the room with a warm smile.
"Hey Makito-chan. How are you feeling?" she asked as she stepped further into the room and towards his bed.

From where he was sitting on the hospital bed reading a book, Makito looked up and for a moment his face didn't register anything. When he placed who his unusal and rare visitor was his expression broke into a wide and soft grin - a grin that child would wear when seeing their puppy or grandparent after a long while.
"If it isn't Obie-chan! It's been a while since you've last come here, how are you?"
He made no motion to get up as his arms were weighed down with several tubes and ivs all hooked to the machines that sat around him in a silent yet eerie company.
"So what brings you up here this time? Are you going to see Kui-niisan and Chi-chan?"

Shaking her head at his question, she walked over and sat carefully on the edge of his bed, holding up the colorful bag she was holding. "I might stop by to visit them if I have the time, but I came to see you and to bring you your birthday present. I'm sorry it's late, but things have been a little crazy lately for me," she smirked a little taking in his frail appearance. He had never been terribly strong, but it made her a little sad to see him in such a state. "You should go ahead and open it. Part of it won't last for very long," she smiled and set it down on his bed beside him.

Makito raised his eyebrows in clear surprise at the gift that was set down in front of him for two very good reasons - one: he was surprised she remembered his birthday, and two: he was surprised she even KNEW of his birthday. So with slightly trembl;ing fingers he opened the bag to find two things he adored, a book and some chocolate ice cream.
"Ah Obie-chan, how'd ya know I'd been dying for some ice cream today? And this book, it's the newest one in the series, yea? You remember me way more then I ever thought you would, to be honest."
He pulled the lid off the ice cream and sniffed at the aroma that immediately came pouring out into the air, and his stomach rumbled happily.
"Thanks so much for this, but could you actually put it into the fridge? I'm not supposed to eat today since tomorrow I've got a check up and they have to scan me several times. It's a bit of a drag but..."
He shrugged and smiled lightly, but as soon as he smiled it quickly turned to a frown.
"...Does...does Izumi know you're here today?"
Izumi. Him.

Obie laughed at his surprise and watched him take out his gifts with an excited smile. She loved giving people gifts. Truly loved it. Watching his enjoyment, she smirked at his request and reached out to take the pint from him.
"Of course," she smiled and rose to her feet to walk across the room. At his next question, her smirk deepened a little and she shrugged as she opened the freezer and put the ice cream inside of it for him.
"I didn't see him out in the halls or anything, if that's what you mean?" she replied, turning back around to face him again. "Why, is he supposed to come by?" she asked, walking back over to sit back down in her previous position on his bed beside his legs.

"No, he's not but I'm still...a little worried. When we came back to Biei from Aquila he assumed I had severed my ties with all the people there. He doesn't now I still talk to you and come visit me."
Makito prayed she'd understand the seriousness of those simple sentences, mainly for her own safety. Ever since he'd become more ill and once more Izumi had to donate marrow to save his life so...the younger boy had become even more possessive and protective of his elder best friend. Enough to the point he seldom left his side. Yet that didn't bother Makito in the least, as he loved Izumi's company and was always glad to not be left alone.
"I don't want him to try and hurt you again, like before. He may be tolerating you for my sake but...lately he's been acting a little off, even for him."
--
"Oh Izumi-chan, are you going up to visit Makito-chan?"
A nurse smiled and waved to a young boy who was walking hurriedly towards the elevator, a rather different expression playing on his features. As she finished her wave she was pleased that he waved back before touching a button and waiting for the car to come down.
"Oh Izumi-chan, by the way...do you know any girls that would want to see Makito-chan, other than your sisters? One came by today and I gave her the room number..."
The youth looked at the elevator before turning back to the nurse, his eyes cloudied. He gave a soft smile and bowed to her before heading to the stairs, the smile on his face slowly turning into an all-too-familiar grin...

Obie couldn't help but roll her eyes a little. She didn't fully understand why Makito put up with Izumi's possessiveness. If he wanted to have more friends, then that should be his perogative. But she wasn't going to kick up a fuss about something that was none of her business really. At his words of concern, she smiled softly and shook her head a little.
"Don't worry so much Makito," she smiled and placed her hand gently on his covered leg. "If you want to continue talking to me, then that's your decision, not his. He can't keep bullying people all the time to get his way," she smiled and looked down to the book she had brought him.
"Are you glad for the next one? I had a little trouble remembering if you had gotten it yet or not," she smiled, changing the subject to something much more relaxed and less complex. She appreciated Makito's concern, she really did, but she saw no reason to worry so much about Izumi. He wasn't going to scare her off from coming to visit Makito.

"Obsidian, I'm serious about Izumi. I...you're one of the few people outside the family that I have that I could consider a dear friend, and the only reason I'm worried about that fact is Izumi sees you as a threat to him."
Makito sighed and sat up more in the bed, his sickly frame more visible now beneath the thin hospital frock that draped over his shoulders. The heart machine that sat to his left peeped a little faster as he made the movement, indicating that it was somewhat of a strain still though the boy was well on his way to recovery.
"Not a threat of someone who can take me away from him, of course, but more of a threat to him with the people you know. Does that make any sense at all to you?"
- --
He stood inside the elevator as it went up, watching the numbers flash above him with dark and heavy-lidded eyes. A cruel smiled played on his lips as he crossed his arms, fingers drumming against the flesh in a nonsense rhythm.
She was here, huh? That would make it all the more fun...

Obie smiled a little at Makito's sentiment and dropped her eyes down to the tiled floor. "Makito-chan, truly, I appreciate your concern, but... I'll be alright," she smiled a little and looked up at him again. "I don't doubt the sincerity of your warnings, but he has nothing to worry about. I would never say anything against him. Surely he knows that? Besides, what people do I know?" she asked with a slight smirk. "I'm just a college student."

"You know me. It's..actually happened to him before with one of his other friends. They were really close, and one day a girl came into the mix and turned the guy against Izumi - beat him up pretty badly and left him for dead. This was aboiut a few months before we left for Aquila's middle school so we were..."
"Twelve."
Makito's face paled as the door swung open and inward, somehow squeaking even though the hinges were oiled and fresh. In the doorway stood Izumi, his usual grin on his face and his eyes narrowed to the point he was looking down on the pair. His time in Biei had changed his appearance a little as well with him getting taller, leaner, and slightly more tan.
"Nice to see you again Obsidian. I'd say it's a surprise to see you, but then I'd be lying."
He grinned again, and Makito felt his blood run slightly cold. The heart moniter skipped.

Obie listened to Makito with a slightly worried frown. She had no intention of coming between the two friends, but with Izumi's unpredictability there was no telling how he would interpret her friendship with Makito. She honestly didn't think that Izumi would ever harm Makito in such a fashion so that only left one person in the equation that would be. Managing a weak smile, she was about to say something to Makito when the expression on his face made her blood run cold. Turning, she rose from her perch on the foot of Makito's bed and looked Izumi over.
"It's nice to see you again as well Izumi," she said with a slight nod of her head and small smile.

"Really now? Are you saying that because you mean it...or are you saying that because I'm blocking the door and your only means of escape?"
Izumi pressed a finger to his lips in a quizzical manner, the grin still on his face and his eyes still heavy-lidded. At the moment his blood was boiling to see Obsidian in the room with Makito, sitting on his bed no less, but he did make a promise he would never physically harm her again.
"Mimi, I-"
Makito moved to sit fully up on his bed, but stopped as he felt the sting of the iv in his arm as it started to jerk itself out from the movement. He stopped and placed his hand over the needle, looking up at the boy who was now scowling from the doorframe. The heart moniter had been peeping rapidly to match his pounding heart, but as Makito noticed that Izumi had made no effort to get near Obsidian he slowly calmed down.
"She...just stopped by here on the way to visit my brother and Chi-chan. She's still their friend you know, so..."
Izumi frowned more and leaned in the frame so that he was practically filling it up, one arm propped under his chin and the other resting against his frame.
"I don't care."

"Would it make any difference?" Obie asked, arching her brow a little at Izumi's question, then looked down at Makito as he tried to sit up. Stepping closer to him, she was about to put a hand on his shoulder to urge him to calm down, but stopped herself. Swallowing a little, she looked back up to Izumi and forced herself to remain calm. He wouldn't do anything to her. Not here. Not in Makito's room and not in the hospital, nevermind what he had done that one time she had come to visit him alone. Breathing in deeply, she let it out slowly and she looked back down at Makito.
"I should be going. It was nice seeing you again Makito," she smiled down at him. "I will try to come again as soon as I can manage," she said, ignoring Izumi's dominating presence in the doorway and the fact that she knew she was saying all the wrong things.

"If you leave this room I'll kill you before you can reach the stairs."
Izumi stood up straight and placed his hand on the back of his neck, his eyes now more open and his face set in a totally blank expression. His words were not stuttered or spoken in any odd manner, he had simply said them as calmly as a person would normally say 'How are you doing?'.
"Izumi, you swore to me you'd never hurt her again."
Makito's voice was strong and firm as turned from Obsidian towards the figure of his best friend in the doorway, his eyes stern and a frown playing on his lips. While he knew Izumi would never break a promise, he also knew that Izumi was one of the best people at finding a loophole.
"And don't give me that whole 'killing instantly doesn't hurt' bullshit that I know you'll try and pull."
He knew he'd hit the mark when Izumi's cheeks reddened and he turned his gaze away from the pair quickly. Makito wasn't Izumi's childhood and best friend for nothing, he knew the other youth's thoughts pretty much inside and out.
"...Well damn, I guess that means I'll just have to break a promise with you. Shouldn't be hard to do."
He looked back and tilted his head to the side, still smiling wickedly.

Obie stopped dead in her tracks and didn't take another step closer to the young man in the doorway. She may have had trouble believing that Izumi was actually being serious, but she really wasn't fool enough to test him.
"Fine then. I wasn't really ready to leave anyways," she said, backing back over next to Makito and sitting down slowly in the seat beside his bed. She knew she wasn't safe no matter what she did, but she could at least give herself the fals security that Makito could help her if she needed it.
