Red eyes focused on the equally red fruit on the tree branch, trying to find the best possible way to get the apple. The mare could not reach the delicious fruit on her own just by craning her neck, and even if she tried to hold her own against the tree, she'd still be too far. This apple sat on a branch that when she craned her neck up was only a few inches, and was situated nearly at the end of the wood. There were others, sure, but that one looked like it was much juicier compared to the others.

The redder the better, right?

Turning around, she began to walk slowly around the tree, trying to find some other way to either get that specific apple, or find one closer. here were quite a few, but still... Her stomach growled, and the white and blue mare, Cosette, sighed.

A short distance away on the other side of the tree, another mare was pondering a different sort of dilemna. Though well aware of the apple tree, Modera was instead contemplating the ground at her feet; specifically, the juicy patch of clover that sat nestled amidst the grass. The small purple flowers certainly looked sweet...

But so did the grass. And whereas there was lots of grass, there was only one patch of clover. And THAT meant...

Grass. Smiling slightly to herself, she lowered her head to lip at the grass, the white end of her braid lightly brushing the ground as she did so. Keeping things in moderation sure felt good!

Intent on grabbing the apple, Cosette scrunched up her snout as she thought. Now how could she get it? She had obviously attempted several different futile ways. Sure, there was a lot of grass around, but that apple appealed to her the most. She could only imagine how juicy it was, and how sweet...

Shaking her head, Cosette began to walk around he tree, her head up as she mentaly scaled te large plant, skimming for similar apples. But to no avail, however. Sighing, sheleaned her head forward and grabbed one on a low branch, disappointed in herself for just taking the nearest one. Why did it have to be so far up? Something so special should be treasured...

In her stomach.

Unaware of the other mare, Cosette munched slowly on the somewhat sweet apple, trying to imagine it to be the delectable fruit on that dreaded tree.

Unlike grass, apples had a distinct 'crunch' to them; no matter how softly a Soquili might try to eat an apple (or a carrot, for that matter), there was always going to be that tell-tale noise.

Hearing that crunch brought Modera's head up. She hadn't really been expecting to encounter another Soquili, but she really shouldn't have been surprised, what with the abundance of food in this area. Really, for the highest efficinecy there should really be SEVERAL Soquili about eating the food; otherwise it would be wasted when it's natural life span ended. Even worse, if one Soquili were to try and eat it all themself...disaster.

However, that was not the case. Upon looking about, Modera spied a white tail on the other side of the tree, and immeadiately identified it as attached to the mysterious cruncher. Having decided THAT, it was time to act.

Tossing back her braid, Mod walked around the tree opposite the tail. Sneaking up on people was for foals, after all, and she was no foal. Even AS a foal she'd been very restrained in that sense, so...

"Good day to you."

Too engrossed in eating the apple, Cosette hadn't noticed anyone walking around the tree. She hadn't expected an encounter at all, even with so much food. Most could just turn around, see grass, eat, and go back to their daily activity. So at the voice, Cosette nearly jumped, a shocked look on her face as she registered the gray mare in front of her. She blinked, attempting to focus before shaking her head, a light smile on her face as she laughed softly at her foolishness.

"Oh! Um, hello." She bowed her head respectfully, her eyes grazing the apple's core before looking back to the dimly colored mare. She offered a sheepish smile. She knew she had looked rather silly, but she had good reason... Or so she told herself. Taking a very small step back, she decided it would be best to not gawk and introduce herself. "Well, I'm Cosette, stranger."

At the unexpected jump from the mare, Modera's eyes widened slightly in concern. A twitch that pronounced could hardly be pleasant or healthy, likely either an existing anxiety towards strangers or else possibly a temporary reaction brought about by eating a bad apple...

Even after the other mare greeted her, Mod wasn't exactly sure that everything was fine with her. Nodding her head in acknowledgement of both Cosette's greeting and introduction, Modera still couldn't quite remove the concern from her voice as she inquired, "Are you quite alright, Cosette? I didn't mean to startle you or come upon you that suddenly, but I think I did. I'm so very sorry, are you going to be alright? Oh, and my name is Modera; a pleasure." One mustn't forget one's manners, after all, not matter what the occassion.

Cosette didn't think that her little jump would be considered unhealthy. She hadn't spoken to anyone for a few days, and she had thought of the clearing to be well, clear. But at the concern in Modera's voice made the arctic mare raise a brow, giving the gray-scale Soquili a funny look. She was apologetic, but with the tone Cosette began to wonder if her jump had really been that startling.

Smiling at Modera, she chuckled softly, "It's nice to meet you Modera. But uh," She paused to shake her head, "I'm perfectly fine. I was just a tad startled at hearing someone here. I thought nobody was here. I kind of just close out my surroundings when I eat, so it's my fault," She nodded reassuringly. "No need to apologize Mod! ... May call you that?" Cosette inquired, trying to lighten the air and conversation.

Though she continued to give Cosette that somewhat concerned, slightly disbelieving look, Modera finally decided that Cosette herself must know whether or not she was actually fine better than a random stranger. Still, Modera wasn't used to seeing that violent (at least in her eyes) a reaction from another simply due to meeting a stranger, and the whole thing seemed worrisome. Suspicious as well, but that was a whole other can of worms.

After attempting to shake off the nagging bit of worry, Modera resigned herself to her usual attitude of concerned skepticism. Nope, there was always something to be concerned about in the Soquili lands.

Still, that was no reason to weird out this mare! Smiling in a slightly stiff fashion, she gave Cosette a nod, trying to lighten up a bit after being told there was nothing to worry about. "Well, if you say so, Cosette, then of course you must know! And yes...Mod is fine, I've been called that before."

Looking away from Cosette, Modera glanced around the clearing, once again noting the abundance of food variety. Strange that they were the only ones enjoying the bounty... "Do you often feed here, Cosette?"
