What are your guys' thoughts on 7 string guitars? I know they are used pretty regularly nowadays, but there is a price to pay if you want that extra string. I played a John Petrucci Musicman model the other day and I absolutely fell in love with it. The thing is, I want to really expand my guitar collection and go and buy a seven string. The thing is, the 6 string signatures normally cost around $1,500... If I want to upgrade to a 7-string with the exra piezo pickup, it's going to be well in the 2,000 dollar range. Do you guys think it's worth it to pay for that?

Well, the one extra string gives you an extra 5 notes.
BUT.... it gives you the option of making really great sounding chords far up the neck with the extra bass string.

Are you that fussed about having a petrucci model? Becuase otherwise, Ibanez seel pretty good seven strings for affordable prices. Is it worth spending £1000 on something that you essentially experimenting on? If it were me, I would purchase a mid priced 7 string to learn how to play a 7 string on, and then start looking into high end models when you have profiency in that style or guitar.
