I'm normally a fan fiction writer,
but recently, I wanted to write something of my own.
I've been trying to think about a good plot or setting, but
I'm stuck. I mean, yeah, a change from fanfiction to your own work is
difficult because it's so different, but I want to ask a few things....

1. When you write fanfiction, it's more for the readers and not yourself (or so I'm told). Is it the same for original work, or vise versa?

2. What do readers look for in stories. What kind of charatcers, writing styles and genre?

3. The difference between fiction and fanfiction besides the fact they aren't your own charatcers you're working with.

I actually, at one point, switched from original to fanfic and back again. So it hasn't been hard on me, but I know the difference VERY well.

Fanfiction is too easy, I find. Gimme any movie, book, manga, anime and I can mold their plot to my own just using their characters.

What people don't realize is that, most of the time you write a fanfiction that is completely different from its original plot and purpose, you have already created your own original. The characters end up only sharing names with their original counterparts and turn into your own.

1. Any piece of writing is for you and you ONLY (that's how you should initially think). If you let others read it and they enjoy it, that's because it suits their taste. You shouldn't write to please others.

2. As much as you write for yourself, you have to think about how YOU as a reader would look at the story. Mind you, you're probably aiming at a certain set of readers, not everyone.

What do you look for? Everyone looks for something diff., but something diff. can mean something cliche for someone else. What are you comfortable writing, first of all? You should know that much.

3. The difference between fiction and fanfiction...well, first, the similarities.

Both are fiction.
Both are written by YOU.
Both are potentially read and enjoyed by others.
Both are fun to write.

Differences: in fiction you use your own. In fanfic not your own. That's pretty much it. You have to disclaim stuff and don't have to watch out for plagiarism or using that original's ideas, because you've already said you are using them.

Easy start off:

Use something you enjoy writing fanfics of. Take their characters but completely change them in your mind, but keep their names the same, until after.

Plot their lives how you see it, changing them as you go along.

Start with something that wasn't yours, basically, and add and subtract so much from them and their story, that they are finally your own, in the end. Then just change their names.

You can't do the same witht the plot, however. That should come solely from you, which is def. helped along by character development.

Thanks, that's real helpful. heart
Did you go through the phase of writing two paragraphs and then scratching it, trying again, and blowing that one as well? Dx

I'll try that. Thanks again.
