    Setting

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.119 Sunset
Located near the end of Sunset Road, the O'Malley residence is a classic-style light blue house with white trim and a slate grey roof. It stands two stories tall, plus attic and basement. Several broad leaf trees sit around the structure: two in front, three total at the sides, and four more in the back. The landscaping is irregularly placed to give the house a more natural feel. Curved areas of dark green bushes give way to small clearings of bright green grass. Several of the plants flower in spring and summer, so there are patches of yellow, red, blue, white, and purple throughout both seasons. The irregular landscaping gives way to several little nooks and crannies in which can sometimes be found a stone bench or a piece of sculpture, little hidden nooks perfect for relaxing.

In the backyard, the landscaping is somewhat more formal, framing a small terracotta tile court with a white stone table and two chairs. The chairs are wrought iron with a floral pattern and painted white to resist the elements.

The front entrance has a small stoop, just enough space for one of two people to get out of the rain. A thick brush mat encourages visitors to wipe their feet before stepping into the house.

Inside, the decor is fairly standard, decorated to magazine perfection, and just as impersonal and characterless. There is an unusual dearth of artwork in the house, though there are some decorative arrangements of dried blue flowers, to which Will is partial. The downstairs contains the kitchen, living room, formal dining room, and a little parlor which is not much used. The rooms are mostly medium grey-blue, the floors a mix of hardwood and light blue carpet, save for the kitchen, which is yellow with terracotta tile. Glass sliding doors in the living room, cleanly polished, give a view into the backyard.

The main entryway contains the stairs to the second floor. Doors lead off to the bathroom, master bedroom, guest bedroom, linen closet and office. A second bathroom is through the master bedroom. The master bedroom is green, and perhaps the sparsest room in the house, with only the basic necessities for furniture. The guest bedroom seems more livable, the walls cream with big open windows that catch the light in the morning.

The office is the only room in the house that stays messy. Case files are spread across the table and floor, and Will just as often works down on the floor as in the chair at the desk. There are bookshelves crammed with medical and scientific books related to Will's occupation. Will's laptop computer sits on the desk whenever he's home: it's the first thing he does upon entering the house and disposing of his shoes and coat.

On the whole, it's a fairly average house, and it has fairly average weather. It rains every so often, there are cloudy days and clear ones, and that's the way Will likes it. As "normal" as possible.

    The Neighborhood
The Neighborhood, as it is called in the absence of any more formal name, is the residential center of the Imperium (not to be confused with the Imperium shop and in no way affiliated). It is a conglomeration of pocket dimensions connected to an interdimensional array. By appearance, it is an eclectic mix of houses and quiet streets much like any suburbia -- but each house so vastly different from its neighbors as to seem incongruous. Everything from architecture to weather is tailored to the individual residents, so a castle surrounded by storms may sit next to a lovely springtime cottage or an ice-covered apartment building.

The roads are grass-lined asphalt, flat and unremarkable. There are no sidewalks. Cars are almost never seen in the Neighborhood and the streets are used mostly as broad walkways. The weather in the Neighborhood is always lovely and sunny no matter what the weather at each house is.

Company

    Jack "The Italian" O'Malley
Will's brother, Jack is a former thief who was involved in several high-profile gem and art thefts across the United States and Europe. Will and Jack are as different as night and day. Whereas Will is shy, law-abiding, and very straight-laced, Jack is confident, lawless, and sociable. What they share is a quiet, serious nature, and biological parents.

Jack was a thief from a young age, his criminal record starting at age twelve. He was involved with the mob on their mother's side of the family, but he soon established himself as a somewhat independent thief-for-hire with his own crew. Will, who was born with an ingrained sense of justice, never approved of his brother's lifestyle, going so far as completely cutting Jack off. For almost eight years, they did not speak to one another.

Jack was eventually captured when a routine training heist went wrong and he sacrificed himself to allow his protegee, Maureen Reilly, to escape. Once in police custody, he was collared for several other heists and ended up with eighty years in prison. His brother Will followed the trial on television but never attended.

Six years after Jack's incarceration a very rich New Yorker was brutally murdered in a case which baffled the police. Will happened to end up on the case and, compelled by his desire to see justice done, asked Jack for input on figuring out how the murderer had gotten in and out of the heavily-secured building. Jack immediately saw this as a chance to reconcile with his younger brother. He helped the police with the case and his insights proved to be invaluable, leading to an arrest and conviction.

Six months later, the same detectives asked Jack to help them with a string of gem heists they believed to be connected to Maureen Reilly. Jack proved Maureen's innocence, closing the case again. The police began to use him as a criminal consultant. Jack and Will began to repair their relationship. Eventually Jack's relationship with the police earned him parole. He even stayed with Will until he could find his own apartment.

The terms of the parole were harsh, and when Jack became a suspect in a murder case, he was sent to jail again, no questions asked, despite protesting his innocence. Will believed Jack and managed to uncover a police conspiracy that put both their lives in danger. The evidence proving the conspiracy mysteriously disappeared, including the proof that Jack was innocent, which meant it would be back to jail permanently. When the Imperium offered sanctuary, the brothers took it rather than risk falling victim to the conspiracy and potentially sparking a new police-mob war due to their family connections.

Jack now works as an Imperium security officer and investigative consultant. He and Will have a good relationship, though they still do not get along particularly well (which is completely Will's fault). Jack lives two doors down from Will in a duplex with his dimensional alter Jill and her son Deacon.

    Jill Johnson
Jack's dimensional alter (along with William Gunn), Jill is a single mother with psychic abilities. She can pick up on other's thoughts and emotions, and sometimes see events and people associated with objects or places, even future events on rare occasions. Her psychic abilities make her excellent at helping others. She can pick up on moods and needs of those around her. Jill puts her abilities to good use in her capacity as a nurse and psychic counselor. She lives with her son, Deacon, in the same duplex as Jack.

Jill is pretty, smart, and has a great sense of humor. Combined with her psychic intuition, she's almost irresistible. Everyone loves her except for Will, who finds her creepy and distrusts her "so-called" psychic abilities. He tolerates Jill's presence, but the minute she starts saying things that are too uncomfortably accurate, Will gets frustrated and fed up. Worse, he resents her relationship with Jack, and Jill is perfectly aware of the fact.

Jack and Jill, as dimensional alters, have an understanding of each other that is uncanny. They can finish each others sentences and get along like the best of siblings. They trust each other implicitly.

ill's son Deacon already displays all of the qualities that make his mother such a charmer. She and Deacon are extremely close and loving, possessing an unbreakable bond. They both miss Deacon's father very much.

    Edward M. Autry
Compared to Edward Autry, Jack O'Malley is a saint. Ed spent his life as a mobster, weapons dealer, and drug smuggler. He was extremely good at it, with a reputation for being brutal to anyone who crossed him. He has murdered several dozen people and countless more have died as a result of the weapons and drugs he helped put out on the street. He lives across the street and five doors down from Will.

Despite his checkered background, Ed and Will get along really well. Ed joined the Imperium after dying in a car accident (which it must be noted he caused by forcing a taxi driver to run a red light at gunpoint), and resisted every step of the way until he was assigned Caleb Manchester as a roommate. Manchester completely reordered Ed's priorities, and while Ed still has a more than healthy disregard for the law, he's a completely changed man.

Ed raised his sister Eileen after their mother was jailed for murdering her abusive boyfriend. (The truth was Ed murdered the boyfriend and mom took the fall to keep Ed out of jail.) Ed was on the way to visiting Eileen when he died in the car accident, and when he died he lost the chance to ever see his sister again. He sort of adopted Will a surrogate sibling in Eileen's place. He's always trying to encourage Will to expand his boundaries and try new things. Ed has a lot in common with Jack, actually, except Ed is more patient and understanding of Will. Ed fulfills Will's subconscious desire for a better relationship with Jack.

Given the history of abusive men in his childhood, it took a long time for Ed to come to grips with his own homosexuality, but in the past year he has finally grown comfortable enough to admit it openly and make no secret of the fact he is in a relationship with Caleb Manchester.

Ed's personality change has really turned him into a force for good in the Imperium, and he's dedicated to helping his adopted family in any way possible. For the moment, that means being really the only good friend Will has.

    Tom Henry Gallagher
Tom Henry is insane. Not in the cute, fun way, in the "don't let this man anywhere near you he's dangerous" way. He is also Will's direct neighbor. He lives in the house next to Will's, on the corner of Sunset and ____.

TH is new to the Imperium and is still undergoing his praetorian intervention/orientation. Will doesn't know much about his neighbor, and frankly he doesn't want to know anything. TH is simply an upsetting person to be around and Will doesn't understand why this disturbed individual was brought into the Imperium in the first place.

Regardless, Tom Henry is bound to make himself known to Will at some point, because that's just the sort of murderous madman he is.

    William Gunn
The final piece of the Jack and Jill dimensional alter set, Bill is a brilliant detective and head of the Neighborhood's criminal investigative team. That makes him Will's boss technically, though Will is essentially treated as his own department because Bill prefers to lead investigations, not run the lives of everyone in the lab. (That particular position is the domain of the almighty Jeremy Blake.) Bill is an extremely shy person, and a string of several traumas in his life have made him somewhat emotionally unstable. When he arrived in the Imperium, he was a complete wreck, having just escaped a mental institution with former praetorix/imperatrix Lily Atriedon-Pierrot. The active praetors helped him to attain some semblance of operation, but it was only a temporary fix. Then, Bill was inducted as a test subject in the psychic counseling program, where he met Jill. Everything seemed to click into place. He made a great recovery and in now a happy and productive member of the Imperium.

Being an alter of both Jack and Jill, Bill has a strong relationship with them both, though he falls a little short of the sentence-ending rapport Jack and Jill share. It's mostly due to his shyness. About the only time Bill shows any confidence is at work, adopting a formidable professional persona.

Bill and Will don't really have much a personal relationship, though they respect one another professionally.

    Minor Personalities

      Jeremy "Lowdown" Blake
      Harry "Loops" Seneca
      Andy "Leaper" Adamson
      Giaccomo "Looker" Lombardi
      Gerald "Lion" Kleiner
      Tycho "Leads" Stravinsky
Will's coworkers, who address him as "Limbs." Jeremy Blake is lord and master of the crime lab, due mostly to the needs of his ego, and he accidentally started the nicknames by overusing the word "Lowdown." Since then, it has become a badge of honor to the crime lab personnel to have L nicknames, though Will doesn't totally understand it. Loops is the lab clown, Leaper is the resident science ubergeek, Looker is a tough-talking New Yorker (sans any mob connections) nicknamed for his good looks, "Lion" Kleiner is the resident encyclopedic textbook of crime, and Leads is the idiosyncratic pseudo-psychological detective (also Gunn's partner). Add in Will and Bill Gunn and you have the Imperium's criminal investigations service.

      Caleb Manchester
The single most powerful psychic in all the Imperium, Caleb Manchester was created in a lab as part of a Nazi supersoldier project. He escaped the lab, killed hundreds of people, and was only taken down by chance when the Nazis sent three other psychic supersoldiers to stop him. Caleb is capable of telekinesis, telepathy, empathy (though he very rarely uses it), and remote viewing, all on a massive scale. He can warp a thousand minds at once to his command, or shift the tiniest cell's in a person's body to kill them. He has remotely disabled nuclear warheads dozens of miles away. He can fly. He can hear people's thoughts. He can send thoughts to others. He can scan memories. He can blow away lines of tanks with a sweep of his hand. He can generate massive waves of psychic energy that continue for thousands of feet.

He was also trained to be a killing machine and it's taken almost two years for him to learn to be anything else. A cold-hearted sadist, he has never known compassion or remorse. He wreaks as much pain and havoc on his friends as his enemies. When he joined the Imperium, his psychic abilities had to be limited with nanites to prevent him from indiscriminately killing anyone.

The crucial thing that made Caleb into a worthwhile person was Edward Autry. Caleb destroyed Autry's life completely for several months, taking out every bit of his anger and frustration at the nanites on Autry, as Autry was usually the nearest target. Autry essentially became a battered wife at Caleb's hands. Then, after the Second Conference, Autry had a chance to escape and instead chose to remain with Caleb. Autry's display of loyalty impressed Caleb, and their bond was further strengthened when Autry was diagnosed with a supposedly incurable neurological disorder and Caleb was able to use his powers to save Autry's life.

Caleb has mellowed considerably now. In his own sort of way, he loves Autry, and he endeavors to be a good citizen to impress his chosen "mate." He finds an outlet for his destructiveness in the Black Hand Mercenaries.

Will prefers to avoid Caleb, as Caleb's strange brand of smugly superior friendliness is fairly creepy, but he can tolerate Caleb's presence for Ed's sake, especially since Caleb doesn't make much use of his formidable powers and usually acts just like a normal person (albeit a b*****d of one). Caleb thinks of Will as yet another toy for him to play with and finds Will sometimes interesting, sometimes boring, much like any other toy. (Despite his massive powers and ability to learn at a lightning-fast rate, Caleb has the emotional maturity of a five-year-old.)
