What myths and legends interest and intrigue us?
Are there any where you live? If not, where are the ones that interest you most, and why?

I've got a few to add, but not at this moment in time (some of them from Prague).

Hypno, feel free to add yours in again, although uhh...it took you a long time when you did it before and it depends if you can be bothered to translate them again.

Back in the old guild I mentioned a legend I had heard about on the radio but couldn't find. It turns out that I couldn't find it because while I thought I heard "Springhill Jack" on the radio show (Coast to coast AM with George Noorey) the character was in fact called Spring Heeled Jack. Knowing this I can now talk about him. Wikipedia says that "Spring Heeled Jack (also Springheel Jack, Spring-heel Jack, etc), is a character from English folklore said to have existed during the Victorian era and able to jump extraordinarily high." Very Interesting.

Thanx Mel! I'll consider translating them for everyone again but, it would be nice to get paid for it this time (it was kinda heartbreaking to see it all disappear). If not, I'll probably make some time for it but not right now.

Say SK, is that character you mentioned popular? I wonder if anyone could find info about it on wikipedia... rolleyes

I don't think many people today have heard about Spring Heeled Jack - I never did before the radio program I mentioned in my last post - but he apparently was a big deal in Victorian England.

A popular American legend - origianally a story character - is the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.

I knew Prague had many legends..but I didn't realize it was that many!

The one I know best is The Golem.

There aren't too many where I live (The New World). If anybody's from New Jersey, they can probably tell you more than I know about "The Jersey Devil."

Also, Native American mythology has many different legends, such as The Wendigo, The Thunderbird, The Great Ghost Dance, The Stories of Coyote and Raven, and many other totems to name a few.

I visited Helsinki last year, and Finland has some interesting myths and legends, but I have to brush up on them again, since my mind isn't what it used to be.

For me:

The Beast of Bodmin Moor
The Barghest
The Uffington White Horse

There are many local legends in the UK. Every area seems to have it's own book of spooky tales. occasionally I try to collect them.

whee What a lovely topic

I own some books about myths and legends (i.e. Spring-Heeld Jack ;3)
I'll try to translate some of these when I'm back home next thursday (the August, 16th...)
But I wonder, if anyone of you heard about the ghost cat of the house Killakee in Dublin?

My favorite legend is legend from my country. I live near Ogrodzieniec, which was ruled by very cruel duke. He has chambers of tortures and was pleased when people suffered and screamed. He killed cmany people but - as everyone - he eventually died.
Then became a black ghost hound who - imprisoned in the castle - is waiting for redemption.

I love this legend, I was so many time in castle in Ogrodzieniec and was hunting for black hound.

I live in the States too, and my school mascot is actually the Thunderbird... Our gymnasium has a huge mural of a Thunderbird breaking through the cinder-block wall, lightning flaring around it... pretty cool...

There's also the local legend behind our town name and the name of a neighboring town... Apparently, the name of the neighboring town, and also our county's namesake, came from "Chief Waupaca," the chief of some local native american tribe. And our town, Iola, was named after his daughter. I don't remember the exact details; I haven't heard the story since I was little. I'm not sure if it's actually true or not... There's even a tour-type steam boat that goes around a group of lakes in the area... It's called the "Chief Waupaca." Heh heh smile
