The World of Maia
Maia used to be flooded with cities in the same way earth is flooded with them today. From eye to eye, buildings upon buildings one could see. Although having so many people that filled the streets, they could not have but diversity. There were people of all sizes and shapes, some that did not even look like humans really, but this place was their home, and they made way with what they could. Some split off into their own areas, their own nations that was filled with a higher population of them, those that ruled these areas came up with interesting names from their own tongue, but now that all of these nations had to come together to build cities up in the sky, they had a struggle coming up with a name per each city. The populations were so mixed that not one stood more dominate than the other. Well Arialz came up with the great idea of naming the cities after stars, for they are the cities in the sky. The thought stuck, and all six cities happily received names of their choice. However, this cluster of nation is not the only one who choose to name themselves of the astral heavens above. There was another continent across the ocean, and although it is known that they have names of stars, little else is known about them, for these two continents are separated by water on all sides. Even though air ships are a thing of common day, it is still not cost efficient to do business with each other, and therefore they hold very little relations. The only other thing is known is that their nation is named Pleiads, while this nation is named Orion.
Within Orion are the five main cities, with the aviation city being the sixth neutral city. Each city has its means of support and reason for being around. And they seemed to mimic the star they were chosen after, although most already knew what their city was going to turn out when they picked their names.
The City-Stars of Orion
Sirius: It is the wealthiest city, merchants and traders come here on daily businesses. Most of the government is setup here as well. The streets are brimmed with large street light poles that run on throughout the night, making it the most brightest city at night. They need not worry about the cost to run it for they are rich beyond belief. Within the city are large sky scrappers that reach high into the atmosphere, the air is quite thin. These areas have artificial gravity and oxygen support so people can survive well within these heights. Having such a large buildings on top of an already high structure makes its weight quite hefty, but luckily it has the strongest pillars out of every city. Legends say not even the earth and time itself could destroy the pillars. Being the largest and wealthiest, it also has the most land dwellers who work and slave away at the ground for materials. Some say this place is 'the' capital of Orion, and even though it does hold the governments, it has not been made official yet.
Algol: This is the city that keeps the aviation school. None of the other five cities trusted each other with it, for they believed all the ships would go to a favored city. So they created a neutral territory out of one of the lesser cities, and it could not be at a better place, for it is in the middle of the other five cities. Although it houses the aviation school, none of its residents can join, however they find themselves happy in any case for they receive prestige and honor of keeping it. This city is generally small but every time the aviation school starts back up, it is swarmed with people, almost tripling its population and its wealth, making it rival against even Sirius and Arietis. Its supplies come from equal amounts from each city in unmarked cargo ships, thus, no one can make their city more favorable by donating more, for the Algolians would not know who sent it, but still every so often they do receive more from one cargo then another, they usually just top it off as either a bribe or the Vegan's being generous as always. Since they get supplies from other places, and they don't mine their own materials, their prices usually sky rocket when the population swells. They are the only other city besides Vega that doesn't hire land dwellers. Main purpose of this is to keep their city neutral, by having them dependent on the other cities for supplies, which means they can not give ships to their own residents.
Arietis:This city is large and always moving about with activity. They say it is the city that never sleeps, but just keeps running the midnight oil. However, this bursting city has one major problem, and it just so happens to be such a problem that it effects every other city. Pirates. These scoundrels live and thrive here. Although not all of the residents here are outlaws, a large percentage of them are. if it was not for its criminal activities, some could say it could rival for the 'capital' position. However pirates of the land do view it as their capital, and make it very clear that they see it this way. Not only is it the reason that Sirius will not name themselves as the capital, but it is also the main reason they are allowed to send off their own batch of students to Algol, even though most cities resent any of the residents coming from it, fearing they are tainted with pirates blood. However, only the sectors that aren't known for piracy are allowed to be sent off, for those that live in the other distracts, generally already have bounties on their heads. One additional scandal this city is known for is its black market in which stolen goods and other things are collected here. With its combined black market, its trades with Sirius and other places, and its Land Dwellers, it makes a hefty amount of money a year, making it rather rich, but the pirates saying, you can never have too much.
Aldebaran: This place holds the most luscious of grass and farm lands. Not many people are allowed to live here, only those trusted not to sell food through black market. It does have several communities and only a few of those send students to aviation school. Since this is almost like paradise, the only reason for wanting to be a pilot from this place must be something besides wealth/land/power, but more of a spiritual thing. Perhaps adventure or something else. Those that live here have no problems really and makes it quite dull. They have the greatest defenders supported by Vega, meaning they do not have to worry about pirates attacks. Although they are the labors of the sky, they have the greatest say in the government, which does not get more powerful then that. They to have land dwellers, some controlled by the promise keepers who work on trying to get the earth usable, but the ones controlled by the other sectors mine for materials. This is so they are self sufficient and don't have to rely on other cities (less prone to bribery).
Vega: One of the noblest of the group. People here stick up for the common man and are often seen doing charitable acts. Although they do have a bounty hunter section that draws in a lot of ruffians, they feel it is fighting fire against fire with the pirates. Vega has made it their duty to protect the other cites and have seen a high turn out rate of pilots from Algol, due to the fact that most Vegans are taught many drills as a pilot, due to their nation being a large military group. Those pilots that succeed, even if not of Vega, they try to recruit them into being captains in their mighty fleet. They're always in need of fresh pilots, for most of their ships are off protecting Aldebaran, Sirius, and Algol. With this said, they exchange their service for enough food and materials to support their city. They generally never ask for more than they need, but if they do find themselves at a surplus, they usually send it to Teegarden. This actually happens quite often, due to them getting bonuses for doing a good job. This place is the only other place besides Algol that does not have land dwellers, but are the only ones who openly are anti-land dwellers.
Teegarden:It is one of the smaller cities, but has a great amount of population, more people then jobs actually actually. With that said, they rarely have enough supplies to feed everyone. Although Vega does send them aid here and there, it is never enough to provide for the countless needy mouths. Thus, families send their children to land to raise money. Although they have land dwellers as well, these children are sent out personally by families, and can come back whenever they want, but generally they hardly have time to besides holidays, because they are in constant need of generating money. It seems almost like a self profiling prophecy of demise though, for they produce more kids to make more money, but because they have more kids, it creates a larger population, which makes it even poorer. Even though they only come third in population, they are still have the lowest amount of cash per a citizen, thus, they are the poorest of all the cities. Those that are sent to the aviation school are usually those who want to earn money to feed their whole families. Which means they generate the most students sent to the aviation school, but they are rarely chosen for most of their sectors are too poor to have good teachers that could give them the required skills they need. With weak pillars from lack of money, they definitely urge their government every chance they get to try and return to the soil. Only a few sectors of Vega and Aldebaran are sympathetic to their cause. These sectors are dubbed the promise keepers by Teegarden. Being such an underdog, they wish to return to the land on Maia, and they are the only city as a whole who remember the the land promised in their early years. They hope one day they will be able to return to the earth's soil, not as land dwellers, but as free people.
